MIGRATORY PROCEEDINGS, STEP BY STEP 1. EVERY intern participating in a GIP in Panama must have a visa. 2. Before his/her arrival in Panama, the intern must send a copy of the aforementioned documents to be revised by the Legal Affairs department of the Comittee. Legal Affairs will help you fill out the documents if you should need it.
a) In the Power and Application, the domicile must be left as is (even if the intern will reside in another apartment, for it is easier to provide the proof of domicile in AIESEC's name).
b) Within the Organization, the intern is participating in a special learning
exchange and NOT WORKING IN IT. According to Panamanian Laws, any exchange with learning purposes CANNOT be paid, so AIESEC will give you the amount of money established in the ACCEPTANCE NOTES in order to ensure the coverage of your living and transportation expenses. We recommend you have an emergency reserve just in case.
3. The intern must arrive in Panama a week in advance in order to comply with the Registry in Migration and begin your visa proceedings. When the intern is asked the motive of his/her visit to Panamá, the answer must be tourism. Since he/she has no visa, answering anything else could result in the entry being denied. From that moment on, the intern will have a tourist visa. 4. The Local Committee that receives the intern must contact and take him/her to register at the Servicio Nacional de Migración (SNM). During this process, the SNM will conduct a brief interview with the intern. In addition to the aforementioned documents the intern must bring:
a) A simple copy of your passport (General Information and page with your entry seal)
b) Two (2) of the passport photos you brought c) Pay $5
5. That same day, the Local Committee must accompany the intern to obtain a Certificate of Good Health and a complete copy of the passport (now with the registry seal). It is strongly recommended that the intern turn in all his/her documents that same day. 6. Once the Local Committee is in possession of the documents, they will be turned over to Morgan & Morgan (our law firm). They will, in turn, proceed to officially begin your visa proceedings. 7. When the Servicio Nacional de Migración (SNM) approves the visa, the LC will ask the intern for his/her passport in order to stamp in the visa. Once this is done, it will be returned to the intern. The Short Term Visas are approved for 9 months and can be extended for 9 more months.
8. The intern will receive a bill from Morgan & Morgan covering all legal costs, including copies, seals, notary costs, etc. This fee must be paid for by the intern. 9. This whole process, from the interns arrival to the stamping of the visa should last 1-‐3 months approximately. 10. If the intern hasn't turned in his/her documents within a month of being in the country, AIESEC will withhold 50% of the monthly contribution until we receive the documents. If AIESEC doesn't receive the documents 6 weeks after the intern's arrival, the exchange will be terminated and he/she must leave the country. 11. The intern must always let AIESEC know when he/she leaves and comes back to the country for control and migratory security. 12. Any information concerning THE EXCHANGE and exits from the country will be between AIESEC and THE ORGANIZATION and AIESEC with the intern. Any questions, concerns or doubts regarding THE EXHANGE should be directed to AIESEC and NOT the Organization. According to AIESEC policies, the intern must come with an international insurance covering his/her stay in Panama in case of any mishaps. 13. Visa Extension
a) If the exchange lasts more than 9 months the interns MUST extend his/her visa. All documents must be turned in 8 weeks prior to the visa's expiration date. Non-‐compliance will result in retention of 50% of the intern's contribution until the documents are turned in. If this does not occur up to 4 weeks prior to the visa's expiration, the exchange will be terminated.
b) The intern must turn in the same documents requested for the visa EXCEPT
for the Criminal Records and $100.00. The extension's expenses are due to legal fees like notary costs and copies and must be paid for by the intern. He/or she will be billed for these costs.
