Agricultural Technology and Mechanical Systems CDE 2018

The fertilizer auger located on Jane and Joe McGillicuty’s farm is powered by a small gas engine. Your group was called to get their new engine working since it is planting time and they need this auger working!

Your group of technicians must work together to get the engine running in less than 25 minutes. The farmers gave their crew a lunchbreak and expect to be ready after lunch.

After listening to the McGillicuty’s, you have determined that they bolted on this new engine and want to make sure it is ready to work.

Your crew has determined that you have time to change oil in this limited time segment. The oils available are before you on table. Chose correct type and correct amount of oil that needs to be added to engine,

Oil brand and SAE rating ___________________________ (10 points)

Oil amount needed _______________ ounces (10 points)

Check fuel level. Does it need fuel? (10 points)

Check and verify to judge that there is sufficient spark (15 points)

Check ethanol content of fuel. Does it meet specs? (15 points)

Engine running properly (15 points)

THIS IS A TEAM ACTIVITY

Wire the following devices using the tools provided. The use of safety glasses is mandatory. The source wire will begin at the receptacle box B labeled source box. 14/2 type NM wires from source box box will run to the switch box A and lamp box C. The switch must control lamp at source box and lamp box C. The three units must be joined together to work correctly.

Do not backwire any switches, use hooks only. Do not tuck the wires into the boxes thus allowing the judge to look at the quality of work. Pick up all tools and excess wiring materials before moving on to next segment.

2018 Agricultural Technology and Mechanical Systems CDE

The Agricultural Technology and Mechanical Systems Career Development Event is intended for teams of four FFA members, with all individual scores counted toward the overall team score.

For this event, students must come prepared with proper safety equipment, including welding jackets, closed-toe leather shoes, safety glasses and welding gloves. Official FFA Dress is not required for this event.

The following components will be included in this event:

(A) Welding with stick and MIG welder. Four 3/16 inch thick X 1 inch flat and one four inch long and a 3 inch long X 1 inch square tubing metal pieces will be provided to students at CDE to weld. See photos provided at website.

(B) General Knowledge Test plus tool identification – questions and tools for identification are based on list to be provided by Darrell Espling, Ag Mechanics instructor at Presque Isle Technical Center.

(C) Fertilizer Auger Engine Trouble Shooting – Each team will trouble shoot a new engine intended to operate a fertilizer auger. By the end of trouble shooting, the engine will be running.

(D) Electrical Circuit – Teams will wire a single pole switch which will operate two lamps switch using materials and instructions provided. An example of the circuit to be assigned will be posted on the Maine FFA website and instructional video to be determined.
