Midtown's PoppingFrom food and fashion to home, services, events, initiatives and more, Midtown is popping this Winter.

Midtown has long since established itself as Atlan-ta's most walkable and accessible neighborhood.

Investors like Jamestown (999 Peachtree) and Selig (12 & Midtown) have taken their time, attracting quality retailers like CB2 and top-notch restaurants like Empire State South to the neighborhood. Now, street-level shops and restaurants—vital for Midtown's continued development as a sustainable, walkable community—are popping up all over the neighborhood.

You'll find amazing art destinations, dynamic nightlife, delicious eateries and fun boutiques from the High Mu-seum in North Midtown, through Crescent Avenue and down to the Fox Theatre and Publik Draft House near Ponce de Leon to the south. Because we can't feature everyone, this issue of the Beacon focuses on what's popping up in Midtown from Metropolis at 8th and Peachtree to 12th & Midtown at 12th and Peachtree. Urban EcoDistrictMidtown Alliance announces the birth of an urban ecodistrict.

Notes and updates from Midtown Alliance | midtownalliance.org | midtownatl.com

It’s been 15 years since Midtown Alliance spearheaded Blueprint Midtown, a community vision for future

growth. The plan called for transforming Midtown from a place where more than 60 percent of the land was sur-face parking lots into a vibrant, walkable urban district. The Blueprint has been a resounding success, as evi-denced by billions of dollars in new investment and the remarkable transformation of the Midtown core. This year, Midtown Alliance placed a "green lens" on the Blueprint. The result? The Southeast’s first urban ecodis-trict. Ecodistricts up the ante on sustainability by setting ambitious goals, committing to implementation and track-ing results. Through the Midtown EcoDistrict, Midtown Alliance will green up its programs and salute the efforts of its businesses, institutions and residents.

“When we surveyed more than 600 people in Midtown, 86 percent agreed that pursuing sustainability is impor-tant to our continued success,” said Kevin Green, Presi-dent and CEO of Midtown Alliance. “The EcoDistrict is

one piece in the overall economic strategy around creat-ing an exceptional urban experience.”

In 2012, Midtown Alliance made great strides—expanding its bicycle network, implementing 12 miles of streetscape and sidewalk improvements, and adding to the more than 800 street trees that they had already planted. They installed 50 recycling cans on Midtown sidewalks and a 3,000-gallon cistern to collect rainwater for irrigation. They also expanded green space, adding a pop-up park at 18th Street and West Peachtree through a partnership with Jamestown and the John Marshall Law School. There is more to come in 2013, including continuing to grow Midtown's recycling program, retrofitting street lights, offering e-waste collection, and starting construc-tion on what will arguably be Atlanta’s “greenest” street—Juniper Street—featuring new barrier-separated bike lanes. Stay tuned for more as Midtown goes greener, and visit midtownalliance.org to learn more.

Streets Alive!Streets Alive Strikes Again May 19, 2013

Well over 20,000 people took over Highland Avenue, Virginia Avenue

and the brandspank’n new Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail to ride, walk and skate through some of the intown neighborhoods of Atlanta on October 7, 2012. On May 19th, 2013, it's Midtown's turn to take to the streets. Look for activities all along the route, including local acoustic musicians, marching bands, a capella groups and classes such as salsa dancing, yoga and zumba—not to mention thousands of people out riding their bikes and walking.

Atlanta Streets Alive needs volunteers! Visit atlantastreetsalive.com to find out how you can help with this remarkable event.
