Välkommen!As mayor of Lindsborg, I would like to welcome all of you to our Midsummer’s Festival. This has been an annual event to high-light the community’s Swedish heritage and our way of helping all of you to experience this heritage. This festival has been held for 37 consecutive years. The planners for this festival have been hard at work to make this a participation experience for you – not just an observation experience. So, I invite all of you to get involved and take part in all that you can. Thank you for coming and remember to come visit us again, stay with us or even come live with us here in Lindsborg, Little Sweden USA.

Midsummer marks the longest day of the year. In Sweden, a country with dark winters and short summers, celebrating the

light and the warmth is a natural thing to do.

and conversation. Here you will be surrounded by traditional Swedish décor from area homes. If you listen closely, you can even learn a Swedish phrase or two.

Svensk ConditoriNow is your opportunity to snatch up those wonderful Swedish baked goods.

Hosted by the Svensk Hyllningsfest Committee, proceeds will go toward the 2009 Svensk Hyllningsfest.

BlomkransLindsborg Arts Council Volunteers can instruct you in making your very own

blossom crown. (nominal fee)

Bethany Lutheran Church (320 N. Main St.)

You are invited to sit and relax in the air-conditioned sanctuary of Bethany Lutheran Church. Park entrance wristband required and may be purchased at the church.

1:00 pm Tråbläs – A talented woodwind trio comprised of Jay Steinberg, Ellen Neufeld and Paula Patterson.

1:45 pm A Trunk Full of Memories – Using a bit of drama and a lot of costumes, a style show of Swedish costumes will be sure to delight all ages. Take a nostalgic look back at the dress of the Swedes used in the festivals of Lindsborg in this style show coordinated by Shelly Carlson.

2:45 pm The Gallery Trio – This trio was founded in 1987 for the 30th Anniversary of the Sandzén Memorial Gallery. Members are Ruth Ann Leaf, violin; Linda Lungstrom, cello; and Linda Newfield, piano.

3:15 pm Church History of Bethany Lutheran Church – Charlotte Ternstrom will tell of the close connection between the church and the development of Lindsborg and Bethany College.

3:30 pm Joshua Lindgren – A 2008 graduate of Bethany College, Joshua will perform a varied program of organ literature.

This adult folk dance group was originally organized for the first Svensk Hylln-ingsfest celebration in 1941. They perform about 30 times a year at folk festivals, programs, and special events throughout Kansas and surrounding states.

Lindsborg Swedish Folk DancersLindsborg Swedish Folk Dancers, a troupe of dedicated high school-aged stu-

dents, continue to make a commitment to their Swedish heritage and to their community by performing traditional Swedish folk dance and music. Lindsborg’s dancers have traveled and performed coast to coast in the United States, and in Sweden, Denmark and Russia. Founded in 1963, this group has a history that spans five decades, and a heritage that carries centuries of culture and tradition.

Tom GriffithPopular organ grinder Tom Griffith will be roaming Swensson Park with his

“new” 1898 Studebaker push cart.

MainstreetMainstreet, a five-piece show band, has been entertaining the Midwest for

over 25 years with a repertoire of music spanning jazz, rock, blues and R&B. Main-street was formed in Manhattan 1979 by drummer Richard “Felix” Smalley, joined by keyboardist Rod Manges, Daryl Batchelor on trumpet, fluegalhorn and percus-sion, Andy Bell on saxophones, and guitarist Greg Spreer.

Kathy Bernstrom LerfaldAuthor Kathy Bernstrom Lerfald truly enjoys her Swedish heritage. Ever since

she was a little girl, she and her family have embraced Swedish Christmas tradi-tions. Swedish Christmas A–Z (Plus 3!), Kathy’s first children’s book, is filled with 29 Swedish Christmas words, traditions, recipes and family activities. Kathy has been an elementary school teacher and a children’s pastor. She and her husband live in St. Paul, Minnesota.

John BerquistAs one of the Upper Midwest’s most respected folklorists, John Berquist pres-

ents concerts and programs that bring to life the heritage and lore of the Midwest. From lumberjack ballads to miners’ laments, folk melodies from Scandinavian, Finnish and Slavic immigrants to songs about people and places, John shares a lifelong collection of music and stories with his audience. A native Minnesotan of Norwegian and Swedish descent, he has toured Europe and has performed at festivals all across America. He plays the guitar, mandolin, accordion, and sings in a rich, warm baritone. John has released nine recordings, the most recent, John Berquist and the South Side Swedes: Scandinavian Music from Chicago.

Volvo Club of AmericaFeatured activities include a Car Show on Saturday from 11:00 am to 3:00

pm in Swensson Park (north end). View vintage, classic and contemporary ve-hicles and help choose Lindsborg’s favorite Volvo by casting your vote.

A timed Road Rally will begin at 10:00 am Sunday. Lindsborg area residents are invited to participate in this free, fun contest (non-Volvo vehicles welcome). Information and registration is available at the Car Show on Saturday.

Augustana Heritage AssociationWe would like to extend a special welcome to the Augustana Heritage As-

sociation, who are celebrating the founding of the Swedish Lutheran Church in America.

MayPOLe COnTeSTBe sure to pick up a map of the participating businesses and your ballot at the Chamber of Commerce’s Map Booth. Voting will last through the end of Midsummer’s Interlude at 7 pm. Judging catego-ries include: best theme, best overall design, best use of color, and best use of materials.

Additional restrooms are located south of the bandshell on the east side of the park. Downtown restrooms are behind Lucia Park in the 100 block of South Main Street.
