LEAKING sewage has killed hundreds of indigenous fish in a Carlswald dam.

In January a sewerage pipe that runs alongside Seventh Road burst where it crosses a stream on Wilfred Mole’s property.

Since then raw sewage has poured into the stream that feeds Mole’s two

dams. The toxic water has wiped out

more than 25 yellow fish daily, with Mole using his front end loader to dig holes deep enough to bury the toxic creatures.

Mole said he had lived on the property since the 1960s, and built the dams to breed the indigenous fish. “We stocked this dam with fingerlings in the 1960s and it is a very sad end for these fish, as their demise was

entirely avoidable had people listened to us over the years.”

But Mole said a previous leak in a sewerage pipe from a nearby residence had also spilled sewage into his dams. “That still remains broken and now we have to contend with this.”

Mole contacted Joburg Water about both incidents, and was promised that the sewerage system would be replaced with a septic tank but nothing happened.

“This is an engineering blunder. For nine years I have been aware of the potential for disaster from these sewerage pipes. I have spoken about this ad nauseum to Joburg Water over the years, to no avail.

“The pipes run parallel to the water course. What engineer thought that a thin plastic sewerage pipe running at 90 degrees to the main floodline could survive longer than a few minutes under normal Highveld storm

conditions? No wonder the water course and dams below this area are poisoned beyond description.”

Joburg Water spokesman, Baldwin Matsimela said access to the sewer was impossible in certain places. “We have diverted some of the sewage along Milford Road and are looking at ways to divert the remainder.

“There are also proposals of a sewer down Springfield Road to further alleviate the problem.”

CAPTAIN Agnes Xaba has been in uniform for 23 years and, over the years, has progressed through the ranks at a number of stations before arriving in Midrand in 2005 where she was promoted to her present rank.

Masinamela started his career as a data typist at police provincial headquarters before he joined the police force.

He is a duty officer but also a police trainer in various sections.

When police duty calls...

CRIME statistics for the past week show a decrease in the trio crimes of house robbery, business robbery and hijacking.

The figures from 15 major police stations in the greater Johannesburg area are released weekly by police headquarters.

The station at the top of the list (number 1) indicates the greatest incidence of trio crimes.

Midrand was placed 14, coming in just behind the station with the least incidents of trio crimes.

Midrand police station commander Colonel Steven Moodley warned that the figures did not mean there was no crime, but that it was possible to eradicate crime and reach the bottom of the list.

Moodley said there were still areas in Midrand to be regarded as crime hotspots.

“The areas are Noordwyk, Carlswald and Halfway Gardens.”

In Noordwyk he said the hotspots were the corner of Palm and Plein streets, Lever and Invicta roads, Cedar and Mohogany streets. Other hot spots were the corner of De Winnaar Street and Smuts Drive, and Rudi Neitz Street in Vorna Valley, Cilliers Road in Glen Austin and the corner of Church Street and Market Road.

Moodley could not deny or confirm that the decrease in crime was a result of the 2010 Fifa World Cup™ deployment.

“Only time will tell. As long as information keeps flowing in to the police at a steady rate and the volunteer patrollers keep up their valuable and dedicated work, achieving number 15 is not out of reach.”

Trio crimes decreasing

TWO officials from the SA Timber & Recovery Juvenile Life Skills Training Centre were denied bail for failing to provide an alternative residential address.

The principal and deputy principal of the centre in Glen Austin are accused of indecently assaulting several boys at the centre.

Centre principal John Logan and his deputy Cornelius Uys had been using the centre as their permanent home.

But according to the magistrate, for their own

safety they needed a different location if granted bail. They appear today (Thursday) in the Wynberg Regional Court.

The centre also faces a bleak future as Logan has defaulted on the payments for the property since last year.

Property owner Arno Strydom confirmed that the centre owed him about R400 000, and he had resorted to the High Court for an eviction notice. “This year I haven’t received a cent from the centre. The last time they made a minor payment was last year. They told me they would settle the payment after the government financed them. Next week they will be evicted,” said Strydom.

THE fraudster accused of ripping off residents across Johannesburg in building material supply scams has been thrown behind bars.

Captain Barries Barnard of the Johannesburg Commercial Branch arrested the alleged con artist, whose real name is Robyn Schmidt, at her Paulshof home in the St Paul’s complex on Wroxham Road.

“She has agreed to cooperate fully, and her court date was set for 12 July. I’m working with about 10 people who have come forward,” said Barnard.

After the first article appeared in the Midrand Reporter several weeks ago, many angry victims have laid complaints against Schmidt, who used a variety of aliases to catch people out.

But this is not the first time she has been arrested. Captain Johan van Wyk of the Honeydew police said that, with the help of police reservist Allan Holmes, he arrested Schmidt about four months ago on the same charges. “She was in jail for nearly two weeks, but her husband repaid the victim and he dropped the case.”

Victims of the scam, such as Cherise Pedder and Annette Primo, were thrilled at the news, and could only hope that their money was returned. Both lost about R17 000 each.

Schmidt would bait clients into paying deposits for cheap building materials, and never deliver the goods.

Those who believe they have fallen victim to her scam are urged to get in touch with Barnard.

ESKOM has urged homeowners to be cautious after criminals representing themselves as Eskom appointed Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb (CFL) installers entered a home.

The incident has forced Eskom to suspend all door-to-door CFL rollouts pending an investigation into the incident. Residents are requested to refuse entry to anyone posing as an Eskom CFL installer.

Customers who wish to participate in the energy-saving CFLs exchange can still visit the locally advertised exchange points in selected

areas. Details of the exchange points are listed on www.eskom.co.za/dsm (click on right hand side panel link called CFL programme and click on customer self exchange points).

Customers are reminded that exchange points are temporary in selected areas only, and should bring their incandescent bulbs as soon as they see the exchange point advertised.

Eskom regrets that a positive initiative such as this exchange programme has been hampered by a criminal element and hopes to resume it in due course.

AMID growing threats of xenophobic attacks, the Calvary Methodist Church in Midrand has provided shelter to five foreigners fearing for their lives.

One of them, a 28-year-old Zimbabwean mother of two who wished to remain anonymous, said the threats were growing despite Mayibuye community leaders’ promise of calm.

Her countryman told the Midrand Reporter, “After a Saturday meeting between the police and community members, some people said they would switch off the main electricity transformers to attack us in the dark. We can’t be sure of our safety anymore because even last year the attacks started as threats. I’m not working so I don’t know why they want to chase us.”

Another man from Ivory Park Extension 2 said his landlord refused to take his money for rent because she was told all foreigners were leaving after the World Cup.

The church pastor Mary Fletcher said she accommodated foreigners fleeing from Olievenhoutbosch, Kaalfontein, Ivory Park and Mayibuye. “We appeal for peace. Everywhere I go the attacks are gaining momentum. Let’s embrace each other as brothers and sisters,” said Fletcher.

The attacks last year were prevalent in Mayibuye and Phomolong, and the victims were housed in a government camp in Country View, Midrand.However, Mayibuye community leader Lesibana Lamola said there was no sign of negativity after the meeting but the foreigners pronounced victory in the streets. “Some even told their respective landlords that they won the war because the police were going to protect them. “We warn them that they should refrain from such declarations because they would provoke people,” said Lamola.

Rabie Ridge police spokesman Constable Joyce Setshedi said they were monitoring the area.

THE road closure of Bridle Pass Road in Sun Valley Estate near Kyalami appears to have been illegal.

Landowners objecting to the closure accuse the Road Closure Committee responsible for the erection of the boom gates of unlawful actions. When Bridle Pass Road was temporarily closed in early June it left commuters outraged. Now some residents have stepped up saying they never approved the closure.

Paul Fairall, an environmental consultant acting on behalf of a landowner in Sun Valley Estate, said, “The road closure is illegal in its formation, approval and position. The Road Closure Committee which purports to act on behalf of the Sun Valley Ratepayers Association made application for this closure to Joburg Roads Agency (JRA) in the name of the Bridle Park/Kyalami Association, a group that has not been properly constituted or mandated to carry out this task.”

According to Fairall, local councillor Annette Deppe orchestrated the road closure and tacit approval was given to her by JRA as early as October last year. In February, JRA required that residents give permission for the road closure.

Fairall said his client was never consulted. Another landowner Ian Barkhuizen, whose family has used the road since 1947, said, “I was never consulted about the closure nor did I give permission.”

Further to this, the road closure was not situated on Bridle Pass but on Rose Road, which is adjacent to Bridle Pass Road. “The closed road is a private property and not a public road or servitude,” said Fairall.

Members of the Sun Valley Ratepayers Association told the Midrand Reporter they would issue a statement on the closure in due course.

The Midrand Reporter tried to contact the Road Closure Committee on numerous occasions on its listed number, but once we identified ourselves the line went dead.

We were able to obtain two other numbers on which to contact the committee but were treated in the same manner. JRA spokesman Thulani Makhubela failed to respond to questions sent to him, while Deppe’s voice mail said she was away.

Bridle Pass closure war

CRASHED: Two people were seriously injured in an accident at the intersection of Allandale and Zuurfontein roads. Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said when paramedics arrived on the scene they found the twisted remains of the vehicles in the middle of the intersection, with the injured people trapped inside. “After they were removed from the wreckage and treated the scene, they were taken to Tembisa hospital,” said Botha.

Soccer City recorded the highest average World Cup attendance, beating the past record of 64 991 set during USA 94.

Give praise to the likes of Argentina and England for allowing the ‘4x4 specialists’, from the country bordering Holland and France among others, a morale-booster and letting them score the way they did. An even bigger record will tumble in the 2014 Fifa World Cup Brazil™ when Bafana Bafana become the first African team to take the gold.

May the patriotism and togetherness displayed during the World Cup remain with South Africans forever.

WITHIN a space of weeks the Peniel Women, Youth and Orphans Development Centre will be forced to close doors due to financial constraints.

The centre accommodates about 70 women between 18 and 50 who have been orphaned, sexually abused, raped or are victims of family violence.

Peniel appealed for help as the centre had reached bankruptcy. The worst crises were a scarcity of food and the unavailability of transport money for the schoolchildren.

Established in 2004 to help cope with the numbers of abandoned and abused females in Gauteng, the centre on Nupen Crescent, Halfway House teaches beading, bakery,

sewing and catering skills. Centre spokesman Matshepo Ramphele

said, “Victims are referred to us by the police stations in Midrand, Ivory Park and Rabie Ridge, and we also work closely with the Department of Community Safety. We applied for financial assistance from various government departments but were shunned.”

Ramphele said that since 2007 the running of the centre had cost R3 million. “It now runs in the red. My biggest worry if it shuts down is where will these victims go? Every year around this time we experience a high volume of victims but can’t accommodate them because of the problems we face,” said Ramphele.

THE South African Revenue Service (Sars) has launched the 2010 tax season.

Taxpayers have the option to file their returns via eFiling or at Sars centres. The Income Tax Return Request (ITRR) forms have already been posted for those who wish to complete a file manually.

Taxpayers who submitted electronically or at Sars centres last year do not need to request a return. They can simply obtain their customised return on their eFiling profile or visit a branch with their supporting documents.

Those who earn an income of less than R120 000 a year from a

single employer and have no further income or deductions to declare apart from those on IRP5, do not need to submit an income tax return.

EMOTIONS ran high when provincial commissioner General Simon Mpembe informed the Kyalami and Midrand communities that police would be shutting down the dog unit in the area.

The unit is situated next to Cluny Farm on Rose Road. For more than a decade, residents had donated the base to police free of charge.

Over the years, the station had fallen into ruin. The working area was small and dilapidated, and phone lines rarely worked.

“Thank you for accommodating the unit, but members cannot be expected to operate in these conditions,” said Mpembe.

But residents like managing director of Cluny Farm Gerda Ramos felt this a poor excuse for its closure, and said police had an obligation to maintain the base.

“The original contract stated that the centre would be given to police for free, provided they kept it maintained,” said Ramos, adding that the community relied on constant police presence in a dangerous area.

Some residents at the meeting thought this was the first notification of closure, and felt police had blind-sided them. But ward committee member Andrew Dicks set the record straight.

“About three years ago we were told the unit would be shut down for the same reasons, and residents signed a petition.

“As a result, police officials gave

us the option of upgrading the base and plans were given to us with the requirements.”

Dicks explained that he approached about 300 companies and appealed for funding.

“I had zero response. One guy paid for a new fence. The writing has been on the wall, and we’ve had three years to make a plan.”

Mpembe explained that the Department of Public Works, which would have seen to upgrades and maintenance, had bigger housing priorities to attend to.

Now, in order to strengthen their own community policing forum, residents have arranged a meeting with Midrand police station Colonel Steven Moodley at the Cluny Farm hall on 21 July at 7pm to discuss a way forward.

BUTCHERED: Poachers left the pregnant rhino and her calf to die after removing the horn of the mother at the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve in Kromdraai. In the early hours of 28 May, a helicopter flew over the nature reserve and poachers took the lives of the rhinos, but the calf’s tusk was left untouched.

A DEBATE for compulsory third party vehicle insurance has been sparked by Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele.

The minister has agreed third party insurance was something to consider in the South African context, especially since only about 35 percent of vehicles on our roads were insured.

Ndebele was responding to a parliamentary question by Inkatha Freedom Party MP Peter Smith who asked whether the government was not concerned about the high number of uninsured vehicles on the roads.

John Motsatsing, chief director of Road Transport Regulation, is on record having said compulsory vehicle insurance was in the early brainstorming stages. “Treasury would have to agree on a financial model and on how the scheme would be funded and managed on a sustainable basis.’’

Meanwhile Automobile Association (AA) spokesman Gary Ronald said the South African Insurance Association was researching how compulsory third party insurance could be initiated.

He stated that the AA had recommended letting commercial companies take the lead on the issue, possibly looking at capping the claim amount on third party, for the initial roll-out phases.

DETAILS of the much spoken about repair order for the Rissik Street Post Office building are finally out in the open.

This comes in the wake of accusations by opposition parties that Speaker Lindiwe Maseko and Nelisiwe Moerane, MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation were reluctant to make the document public.

DA’s Mike Moriarty Moriarty also pointed out that government was dragging its feet and neglecting the historic building in the hope that it would decay further.

He said the repair order was addressed to the City of Johannesburg manager Mavela Dlamini and issued by the Provincial Heritage Resources Agency, compelling authorities to rebuild the post office after it was gutted by fire late last year.

Prior to this announcement Johannesburg Property Company (JPC) promised that the matter was receiving special attention.

Brian Mahlangu of JPC told this newspaper that the restoration would be in line with heritage approvals as the municipality had assembled a team consisting of a heritage consultant, engineer, quantity surveyor, contractor and health and safety officer.

“The budget for the project will be determined as soon as the extent of the damage has been determined and the restoration strategy developed.’’

Mahlangu also revealed that the first phase of the project was currently underway with teams involved in cleaning, salvaging and developing a restoration strategy.

IF THERE is any truth in rumours, the country might be heading for more of the xenophobic violence that left a bloodbath in 2008.

That’s according to foreign nationals living around Johannesburg. They claim to be told every day by locals that after the 2010 Fifa World Cup ™ finals these attacks will be the order of the day.

A Diepsloot-based Malawian who works in Kya Sand said he had been warned of imminent danger. “Even in taxis, as soon as they realise you are not South African, they remind you your days are numbered.”

But police spokesman Brigadier Govindsamy Mariemuthoo said they had taken serious note of these threats. “Our members are on the ground trying to arrest the perpetrators. We condemn this contemptuous talk of war and are watching the situation 24/7.”

Meanwhile it is common knowledge that civil society and South Africa’s social movements came out strongly against the 2008 xenophobic attacks, calling them pogroms promoted by some individuals in government and other selfish organisations pursuing ulterior motives. According to a report by the Human Sciences Research Council, last year’s violence claimed dozens of lives and destroyed households.

Some of the broad causes for this onslaught were fears of deprivation, intense competition for jobs, commodities and housing.

BELIEVE it or not city council’s Revenue & Customer Department has been awarded a prestigious golden award for the best implementation of a SAP IT solution across the continent.

According to city council, this is a special award in recognition of the successful implementation of SAP software to migrate more than one million accounts from different databases onto a single platform.

SAP Quality Awards recognise customers who have effectively managed their software implementation in a complex, technical and business process environment.

According to Kgamanyane Maphologela customer communications deputy director Revenue & Customer Relations Department, the SAP project was a sign of city council’s firm commitment to implement new processes that seek to ensure sound solutions to ratepayers’ and customers’ problems.

“This award is a clear indication we are on the right track to transform Johannesburg into a world class African City.”

Maphologela also revealed that it was a well-deserved accolade for the project team, senior management as well as each and every municipal employee who had made a contribution towards transforming the department.

The City of Joburg received the award at a time when complaints of incorrect billing were reported to this newspaper daily.

As things stands this newspaper has been informed that hundreds of residents in Joburg north have not received their monthly statements for almost two months now, while cases of inaccurate interim meter readings have also increased.

John Mendelsohn, Democratic Alliance, ward councillor said this was tantamount to ‘illusion versus reality’. “This is a meaningless award because residents are not getting five-star service from this department.”

Residents in crime watch

Calvin Raju writes:CRIMINAL activity in Noordwyk has been appalling.

I feel that one house robbery, break-in or hijacking is one too many.

I would like to leverage some pressure on the armed response companies servicing residents in our area.

These companies are charging us a premium for services rendered, which leads me to ask the question, what is this service for?

Is it for arriving at a break-in after the incident has occurred? If so, then why are we paying them for this service, while the police do this for free?

In my mind, I pay my service provider for patrolling the community streets, and creating a sense of visibility, which I hope will deter the criminal element from infiltrating our neighbourhoods.

I pay them to be vigilant and proactive. They are reaction units, but currently they seem like reaction units that only react after the incident

has occurred. I want to approach these companies and

remind them that we are the reason they exist. My aim is to request that their presence

be increased, and that a far more proactive approach be taken in terms of crime prevention. I am expecting these companies to come up with alternative methods of patrolling like guards on foot, or on motorcycles, quad bikes, and propose these to us, their clients.

Alternatively I shall also be looking at approaching one single armed response company to service the entire Noordwyk Extension 1 area.

None of the companies servicing the area are committed to our safety. I would like to change this, and it starts with us, the stakeholders. Let’s vote with our money, or in this case, with our armed response contract.

Let’s take back our streets, neighbourhood and our community. Together we outnumber those who perpetrate crime in our communities.

Sipho Masigo writes;THE old saying, ‘Where there’s smoke, there’s fire’, is beginning to look prophetic for the indications of xenophobic violence.

While it is easy to blame foreigners for poor service delivery or accuse them of stealing opportunities from South Africans, it is not the foreigners’ or strangers’ fault. That blame must belong to us. South Africans voted for the government they got.

If this government is wasting money, and life in your area is not as nice as it could be then

you have the capacity to change it at the ballot box in the next election. You will not solve these problems with violence. In fact violence will probably make things worse.

If you cannot bring yourself to accept or embrace a foreigner in your neighbourhood, then learn to leave them alone. As much as we would like to blame crime and lack of jobs on them, they are not responsible for that mess.

Try to remember that they have experienced hardship before, and instead of punishing them again, learn from them.

They are not at fault


Sandra Szeili writes:I HAVE always thought extremely highly of the security officers at Tactical Reaction Services (TRS) who have responded to our panic alarms over the years.

But when I sent out a panic signal on the night our house burnt down recently, I had no idea how much further they were prepared to go. I was truly grateful to see them helping out above and beyond their duty.

To the first two officers who responded, your professionalism and level-headed thinking was truly amazing. You both entered the house and assisted my husband Peter as best you could before coming outside to call for back-up.

When more staff arrived, you used your heads and broke down the office door and

started taking belongings from the room. Many items you pulled out are very special to our family - like photos of our kids growing up.

To the gentleman (sorry, I don’t know your name) who personally came up to me and expressed his condolences, thank you, it meant the world to me and I shall never forget it.

I’m sure like us, you all have kids, wives and a family. Our home has gone, but thanks to your help we still have our family. We will build a new home sometime and our lives will move on.

So to Nyiko, Daniel, Joseph, Brighton, the gentleman in the control room and all the others who came to my property on the night of the fire, I am at a loss for words to express my gratitude to you all.

THERE is never a time in South Africa not to celebrate and, before the dust settles from the 2010 Fifa World Cup™ celebrations, we honour the 92nd birthday of a world icon.

Nelson Mandela’s release from the prison in 1990, and his gracious influence on this country and the world, seem to have been key factors in a number of milestones reaching our shores.

The world celebrated our new democracy with us in 1994, hailing our constitution as one of the best in the world. In 1995 we celebrated unity through sport when the Boks won the rugby World Cup at home and Madiba stood as a uniting figure when he hoisted the trophy high.

During his tenure as the first black and democratically elected president of the country, hopes were restored for the previously oppressed

and deprived. People started believing in our future and South Africa became a beacon of

hope for the continent as the world embraced us as part of global society.

We have successfully hosted the cricket World Cup among other international events, and the opportunity to host this great soccer tournament would probably not have happened had it not been for Mandela’s influence and status.

Mandela remains an inspirational figure and will no doubt do so for generations to come.

In celebrating the 92 years of a living legend, let us dedicate more than 67 minutes to do good and give back to both South

Africans and people from outside our borders.Let’s follow in the footsteps of a man of

greatness, and spread only kindness and tolerance.

Doug writes:TWO wonderful spotted eagle owls have taken up residence in one of our palm trees overlooking our quiet street in Fourways Gardens.

Spotty arrived one morning in March and both he and Dotty, which arrived at the end of April, have provided endless joy and interest to us and our

neighbours. As cars pass by, heads crane out of windows to catch a glimpse of them.

Joggers, walkers and regulars now know about this famous pair. Mothers pushing prams bring their children to look at them firsthand.

Most children know about owls, but haven’t actually seen them before.

A NEW cat has arrived at Midrand’s Lory Park Zoo.

Leia, an 11-month-old black jaguar, was brought to Midrand from a zoo in Belgium to hopefully breed with Lory Park’s male jaguar.

Leia arrived last month and was adapting well.

Lory Park Zoo manager Althea Guinsberg said, “Jaguars naturally

occur in South America but due to habitat loss and the fur coat trade their numbers are plummeting. We have two tawny jaguars, Venus and Jupiter, and hope Leia mates with Jupiter. There are jaguars in the country but many are related so we were looking for a captive female to bring a new bloodline into the country.”

Ginsberg said black jaguars at other zoos in South Africa had died. The young cat was settling

down well in her new enclosure, and they were trying to introduce her to Jupiter. “We are not pushing the introduction but are letting it happen on their terms. Both have shown positive interest in each other. Leia loves the plants in her enclosure and we often see her lying in them and turning on her belly and rubbing herself against them.”

TWO Midrand companies have helped an HIV positive Ivory Park woman reach her dream.

They are African Bank and Dent Doctor. As a result of this partnership, Kidibone Sehole (35) now runs her own Red Ribbon Car Wash from the African Bank building, where everyone is encouraged to make use of her service.

When Sehole tested positive in 2005 she was placed under the bank’s Employee Wellbeing Programme. The initiative is usually reserved for the bank’s employees but an exception was made.

Dent Doctor Midrand bought car washing equipment for Sehole.

“I am now able to support my three children,” said Sehole.

“I also give counselling and motivate bank employees who are infected to not lose hope.”

African Bank senior manager of the Employee Wellbeing Programme, Youlanda van Boom, said the bank had helped Sehole with treatment and counselling.

“We have also approached neighbouring companies to make use of her car wash,” said Van Boom.

“We decided to offer Sehole help because we wanted to make a difference,” said Erhardt Fuhri from Dent Doctor Midrand. “We will continue supporting her and helping her expand.”

AS THE country bade farewell to the 2010 Fifa World Cup™, Midrand soccer fanatics closed the event in style at Birds’ Eye lodge in Glen Austin.

Best dressed soccer supporters wearing traditional regalia were awarded. The winner in the female category was Zanele Omokwe who walked away with R1000 as did her male counterpart Vincent Maleka.

The fans were encouraged to buy beverages and food from the lodge where money accumulated would be used to fund a children’s home in Midrand.

Organiser Linda Msipa said, “After

realising that there are too many disadvantaged children in Ward 92, we thought it would be appropriate to raise funds for one of the homes. We thought of the Fifa World Cup finals as the right platform to gather people and do something right for our community,” said Msipa.

Ward 92 councillor Sinnah Ramakhula applauded the humanitarian gesture. “It is a good initiative because there are quite a number of homes in my ward that find it hard to sustain themselves because of financial constraints. I wish more young entrepreneurs could emulate what you have done as a form of eradicating poverty in our society,” said Ramakhula

THERE is something mysterious and inexplicable about the healing power of the creative process.

The art therapy centre Lefika la Phodiso, which means ‘rock of healing’ in Sotho, harnesses this phenomenon to help people overcome problems.

“When someone has been through trauma, words can break down and feelings become blocked.

“Making art elicits emotions that transcend language,” said the centre’s founder and director Hayley Berman.

She started Lefika – Africa’s first art therapy centre - in 1993 to help reintegrate teenage struggle activists into the school system.

Today this non-profit organisation works with

meagre funds to better the lives of individuals, families and communities affected by abuse, crime, poverty, and HIV/Aids.

“Art therapy is not about drawing a picture and a therapist interpreting it,” Berman emphasised.

“Not everyone can draw or wants to, so the client has a choice of materials like clay and paint to create an artwork, which the therapist discusses with the artist.”

“At our holiday programmes for underprivileged children they are given food because school feeding schemes stop during holidays.

“They are physically and emotionally hungry. Some come from homes where a grandmother looks after 10 children. They desperately want to be noticed.

“Our activities help them develop self identity.

THERE is much hope for the youth and football, especially for youngsters at the Shaun Bartlett Football Academy.

The academy organised a three-day soccer training camp during each of three weeks at The King’s College in Bryanston.

Children between the ages of three and 17 braved the freezing mornings, many playing for the first time, and were taught all aspects of the game by professional coaches.

Marketing manager Karabo Thekiso explained that, at the camps, children were also encouraged to study hard, say no to drugs, work together as a team

and not bully. “These camps mean that

children aren’t watching television or eating junk food, but learning to be good sportsmen.

“At the end of a session they’re exhausted but fulfilled.”

Bartlett, a retired professional footballer with a Uefa coaching licence, started the training camps with his wife Juanita.

The academy planned to play competitively against other clubs and hoped that some of its players would end up in the international game. “We’re extremely grateful for the sponsorship we’ve received,” said Bartlett.

“These children need a greater future. Not only do we want them to be better footballers but better human beings.”

Boys on the ball

BRIAN Slater is about to take on one of the most gruelling events in the canoe race year.

The Berg River canoe marathon covers a distance of 240km over four days and started on 14 July. Considered one of the year’s hardest races, very few Gautengers include the Western Cape flagship event on their canoeing calendar.

Slater, a member of the Dabulamanzi Canoe Club at Emmarentia Dam, is one of the few challengers from Gauteng taking on this marathon.

He will paddle alongside fellow Sandton businessmen Dave Hamilton-Brown and Miles Hodge, and Gauteng paddlers Leon van der Nest, Hulme Scholes and Mike Vacy-Lyle.

The Berg River starts in Paarl with day one taking the paddlers to Zonquasdrift. The route

continues from Bridgetown to Zoutkloof ending in Velddrif in the Western Cape, with daily distances of 45km, 56km, 62km and 75km.

Did you know?� Since its inaugural race in 1962, there have frequently been dry years when the river level was low and the currents slow, resulting in extreme effort to pull boats through the sluggish water, getting stuck on mud banks and requiring numerous portages. Extreme wind storms can literally bring paddlers to a complete standstill. � The year’s finishers were fastest when the Berg river was in flood. Paddlers would frequently lose the river, paddling around farm houses, barns and trees, asking farmers for directions back to the river route.

HENRE Pretorius is gearing up to face what will most likely be the greatest physical challenge of his life.

The part-time actor (who has featured in shows like 7de Laan and Backstage) and full time television producer will join a team of seven to conquer the 14 Check Challenge, an epic adventure that kicks off later this month for a great cause.

Over seven months, the team will run, ride and swim 4 000km in 15 major road races, mountain bike challenges and triathlons to raise funds for

children of the Pennyville community in Soweto.“The idea is to get companies to pledge money

towards the cause,” Pretorius told the Midrand Reporter from his Craigavon home. “Funds will go towards developing sports facilities in the community, which will keep children active, off the streets and away from crime and drugs.”

The team will have to best challenges like the Ironman, the three-day mountain bike race Cradle Quest, the Argus, and many more. This year, a 15th challenge was added, known as the JHB 2 C.

Dubbed the ‘funnest’ mountain bike race in the world, the 923km race will add the final notch to the epic endeavour. “There is one part of the

challenge I’m dreading,” Pretorius admitted. “In one weekend, we have to complete the Outsurance mountain bike expedition in KwaZulu Natal, cycle back to Johannesburg and then complete the 94.7 road race.”

Pretorius is preparing for the mammoth task by cycling twice a weekend and running three times a week, but explained the challenge would not throw the team into the deep end. “We start off with a few bike races, but by October we’re doing one race a weekend. We’re not professionals, and that’s the point we want to make – anyone can make a difference.”

THE Killarney Country Club’s bowls section will hold its annual Selwyn Segal Bowls Day on 25 July.

This is the event’s 47th year and the organising committee is hoping to raise more than last year’s R408 000 for the Selwyn Segal Society for the Jewish handicapped.

MIDRAND high performance go-kart racer Fabienne Lanz has been nominated for the G-Star 2010 award.

Lanz’ enduring success in karting earned her the nomination for this prestigious award for top sportswomen.

She is up against nine other nominees in different sporting activities, to be voted for online by members of the public.

Lanz said she was excited that her hard work had received recognition. “I hope the Midrand community

votes for me in this competition,” said Lanz. “Voting is now open and closes at midnight on 23 July.”

A panel of judges will determine the winner of the G-Star award from the three candidates with the most votes. The award ceremony is on 3 August,

with the venue still to be decided. Lanz came ninth in round two of

the South African Super Rok National Championship after two crashes.

G-Sport is an online initiative started in August 2006 by cricket broadcaster Kass Naidoo and her

husband Ryk Meiring. The aim was to significantly raise the profile of South African women and encourage corporate South Africa to back female athletes.
