Services 37/X37  – Minor timetable changes on Mondays to Fridays will seethe 37 shorts [to and from Easter Bush] commencing slightly later andfinishing slightly earlier, meaning more peak time buses will start, or finish,at Penicuik Deanburn. Easter Bush will also be served by the new X47  atpeak times. No changes to the Saturday or Sunday 37  timetable or to theweekday timetable for service X37.

Services 47/X47 will see a revised route and timetable, and a NEW Limited

Stop service  X47  - The Monday to Friday timetable is revised to improvereliability. Morning journeys from Granton from 0600 to 0745 and afternoon journeys from Ladywood departing between 1545 and 1900 will now operateas X47s  on a limited stop basis between Surgeons’ Hall and Mor tonhallCrematorium. All X47s will serve Easter Bush. There will be minor changes toboth the Saturday and Sunday 47 timetables.

Unlike the X37 which is geared-up for city-bound commuters, the X47 marketis different in that most students and staff at Easter Bush are travelling out ofthe city in the morning peak, and back into the city in the evening. Thechoice of stops to be served by the new X47 reflects the results of a surveyon existing 47 journeys. Those bus stops with the highest demand as upliftor drop-off stops have been selected. Once the service is introduced, furthersurveys will take place, and the operator will listen to passenger feedback. Ifneed be, the operator will revisit the X47 stopping pattern in future networkchanges.

Service 40  – Revised route in the Musselburgh area, with resulting changesto the timetable. 40  buses will operate a one-way clockwise loop fromMusselburgh High Street [outwith Police Station] via Mall Avenue [past theFirst bus depot and Tesco], Olive Bank Road, Newhailes Road [Lidl], North

High Street [Brunton Theatre] and Bridge St back to Musselburgh High Street[opposite the Police Station]. Buses will take layover at Newhailes Road [thebus stop opposite Lidl]. Passengers will be able to sit on the bus through theterminal point to complete their journeys [boarding before the terminus toride towards Penicuik, or boarding along the route from Penicuik and ridingacross the terminus to North High Street or Bridge Street]. Minor timetablechanges associated with the route change will be introduced.

Service 49  – Revised route and timetable on Mondays to Fridays. 49 busesthat terminate short at “Sheriffhall Park and Ride” will be extended to andfrom Dalkeith Campus replacing peak journeys on service 33  as well as a

new daytime service to the Wester Cowden area. This will provide a busevery 30 minutes for this newly built part of Dalkeith from 0630 to 1930. Atthe weekend there will be minor changes to both the Saturday and Sundaytimetables, along with some changes to the evening timetable on all days ofthe week. There will be no bus journeys to/from Wester Cowden in theevenings or on Saturdays or Sundays, but if usage of the daytime weekday49s grows healthily, evening and/or weekend services may follow.

Service 67  – New later Monday to Friday evening journeys will be introduceddeparting Easter Bush for the City Centre at 1902 and 2002. Contra-flow journeys in each peak will no longer serve Straiton Park and Ride in order to

NEW ROAD OPEN AT GREENDYKES – SERVICE 111

The spine road through the new residential estate between Greendykes andThe Wisp has been substantially complete for some months, but was notadopted by The City of Edinburgh Council until the end of last month.

On the afternoon of Thursday 28 January 2016, the new road [called MilliganWay in the latest “A-Z of Edinburgh” atlas] was opened to through traffic.

The 111 service operated by Prentice Coaches of Haddington since May 2015was registered with the Traffic Commissioner to use Milligan Way sinceintroduction, although a “temporary” diversion via Jack Kane Corner andCraigmillar has been operated for over six months.

Accordingly, as soon as Milligan Way became available, Prentice diverted the111 on to the road that it should have been using since May 2015. This has

noticeably improved timekeeping and reliability on the 111 in the first twoweeks of the new way of reaching the ERI.

Service 111 is a daily bus service run by Prentice under contract from EastLothian Council and partially supported financially by Midlothian Council.

The primary function of service 111 is to link various East Lothian towns andvillages with Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, but as it passes through Midlothianit gives a bus link for the Midlothian villages of Millerhill, Newton Village,Hilltown and Cauldcoats.

There are 8 or 9 roundtrips each day Monday to Saturday, and one roundtripon Sundays timed for hospital visiting.

Eight new Edinburgh-London services per weekday  Services every half an hour for most of the day  Booking horizon extended from 12 to 24 weeks  Thousands of £25 fares released to celebrate 25 services a day from

May 16

Virgin Trains has been given permission to introduce 42 new services a weekbetween Edinburgh and London from May 16, boosting seat capacity by

22,000 a week on the route - that’s an increase of near ly a third (32%).

Customers travelling between the two capitals will see four new servicesdaily in each direction from May 16, ensuring a half-hourly frequencythroughout most of the day on Mondays to Fridays. Two additional serviceswill be added on Sundays.

The timetable boost is expected to lead to an upsurge in cross-border traveland comes as Virgin Trains undergoes a £21m refurbishment of its fleet – including brand new leather seats in first class, new standard class seating, carpets and lighting.

Tickets for the new services will go on sale later this week after the Office ofRail and Road (ORR) approved Virgin Trains’ timetable plans.

To celebrate the introduction of the services, Virgin Trains is releasingthousands of £25 Edinburgh-London fares (in each direction) for the newtimetable, which will see 25 southbound services per weekday fromEdinburgh. These will be on sale for two weeks from Friday 19 February.

In a further innovation, Virgin Trains is extending the booking horizon during

which it is possible to book tickets - from the industry standard of 12 weeksto 24 weeks, making it easier to plan ahead for holidays, visits and othertrips.

The move has been welcomed by the UK and Scottish governments’respective transport ministers. UK Rail Minister Claire Perry said: “This iswelcome news for those travelling between Edinburgh and London. VirginTrains are delivering on their commitment to bring extra services and seatsto this important route.”

Derek Mackay, Scottish Government Minister for Transport and Islands, said:

“This increased frequency of cross-border Virgin services betweenEdinburgh and London is good news, giving passengers more choice ofservices and helping to spread the pressure on existing services. I welcomethese enhanced timetables, the greater connectivity they offer betweenScotland and the south-east of England and the benefits that they will bringto the rail passenger experience and economies of locations along theroute.”

David Horne, Virgin Trains’ Managing Director on the east coast route, said:“This is a major boost for our customers travelling between Edinburgh andLondon who will be able to catch a train every half-hour for most of the day.

We have seen how increasing capacity and frequency adds to the popularityof train travel and we’re confident that customers will respond positively tothese changes. Feedback on our new train interiors, many of which have

been fitted out at Craigentinny depot in Edinburgh, has been positive andcustomers are telling us they love the fresh, new look.”

“More than a million people travel on Virgin Trains’ Edinburgh-Londonservices each year and the route already enjoys a half-hourly frequency atpeak times. The timetable boost comes after Virgin Trains took over the eastcoast franchise in March 2015, promising to drive up standards and attractmore people to rail.”
