    Project UnifyGives SpecialNeeds Kids

    Chance ToShineBy Rob Novit

Nick Keenan took the basketballand raced down the court atLBC Middle School on Tuesday,February 19th in his wheelchair.

He would get a shot off and

make it or not he got applauseand cheers of appreciation duringthe game.

Nick enjoyed this opportunitythrough a program called ProjectUnify. He is a special needs studentof teacher Allison Newbegin, whohosted the inclusion contest withspecial needs children from AikenMiddle School and Paul KnoxMiddle School.

But there was so much more.Other students from the threeschools served as buddies andmentors. Alex Johnson wasamong several students to pushNick up and down the court.

Its fun, Alex said. I l ikehanging out with everybody here.Project Unify is sponsoredthroughout the state by theS.C. Special Olympics. In Aiken

County, the program started atMidland Valley High School andhas spread to other county highschools.

Teachers invited some of themiddle schools to attend aninclusion football game at SilverBluff High School last month.Newbegin brought some of herstudents and their buddies; by thenshe had already started planning

the LBC tournament She has been

    amazed by her schools response.

Other teachers brought theirstudents to the gym to providesupport.

Our Buddy Club has steppedup and helped my kids practice,Newbegin said. Our AmbassadorClub is an actual class, and theymade all the posters for us and theother schools. My kids have beenso excited. They knew it was atournament and said, Were going

to beat those other schools. Mike Epps, LBCs basketballcoach and physical educationteacher, said his wife has broughttheir daughter Carrie to all hisgames. This event was emotionalfor Epps, as Carrie is one ofNewbegins students. He helpedplan the event and served as thereferee for the first half. For thefirst time, he watched his daughter

get a chance to play basketball on

    that court.

Its great for Carrie and all thesekids, Epps said. They look at allthe others cheering for them, andthose are students they think aresuperkids. Esmerelda Cortez has onebuddy, Megan OBanion.Yet, at the football game lastmonth, Meagan and three otherclassmates hung out with her theentire time. They did so again

Tuesday.Ezzie is leaving (to go to

Midland Valley) next year, Megansaid. Im really sad about that.

Aiken Middle teacher EszterMad-Szabo was delighted to bringher students to LBC.

Its important for us to comeout and be together, she said.Everybody can see that these kidscan have just as much fun as other

    kids

The Senate is in session for 2013.I hope that you find this updatehelpful and informative. If I canhelp you with an issue, please letme know. Economic Investment inGraniteville: On February 20,state and local officials announcedthat Recleim, a start-up recycler ofappliances and e-waste materials, will establish its first recyclingplant in Graniteville in the formerHickman Mill. The total projectis a $40.6 Million investment thatis expected to generate 200 newjobs. This is wonderful news forGraniteville, Warrenville, and thesurrounding communities!

Non-Profit Raff les: The StateConstitution prohibits raff les.Nevertheless, many non-profitswish to hold raffles as a way toraise funds. After several yearsof work, representatives fromnon-profits, religious groups, lawenforcement, and the PalmettoFamily Council finally came to aconsensus on legislation to changecurrent South Carolina law thatwill allow schools, churches andother nonprofits to hold raff les.The full Senate gave secondreading to legislation on February14. Because the legislation involvesa constitutional change, thereare two bills. S.213 establishesthe qualif ications for a nonprofitto conduct a raffle for charitablepurposes, while S.239 is aconstitutional amendment thatallows South Carolina voters

to decide if they would likecharitable raffles to be availableto nonprofits. The constitutionalquestion would be on the ballot in2014, and ratified by the General

Assembly in 2015. If approved bythe House of Representatives andthe voting public in 2014, the firstraffles will be legally held in 2015.

Education Oversight AnnualReport & Third Grade Reading:In mid-February, the StatesEducation Oversight Committeereleased its annual report. SouthCarolina has a 2020 Vision toreach certain milestones witheducating students for successin the global economy. Theannual report is troubling asacknowledged by the Committee. For example, the states progressin reading proficiency is flat withlittle gains over the past 4 years.

Also, only 74.9% of high schoolstudents statewide are graduatingin four years. Further, thestate still has 61 public schoolsrated At Risk based on poorstudent achievement. In a verydetailed analysis, the Committeerecommends that state law shouldrequire third graders to read atgrade level or not be promotedunless certain exceptions are met.Retained third graders wouldbe placed in a reading intensiveprogram. Such a change would fallin line with other states includingNorth Carolina which passed asimilar law last year. High School Dropout/DrivingBill: On February 28, the SenateEducation K-12 subcommitteedeadlocked 3-3 on whether toprovide a favorable report to thehigh school dropout/no drive

until 18 bill this past Thursday. Iam the primary sponsor. The billstill has a chance to win approvaland advance to the full Senate laterthis month when it comes up to the

full Education Committee. Concealed Weapons Permit:In late February, the SenateJudiciary Committee passedlegislation (S.308) allowingconcealed weapons permit (CWP)holders to carry their handguninto a restaurant which serves

alcohol as long as the permitholder does not consume anyalcohol while there. Restaurantshave the option to post a sign notallowing concealable weapons onthe premises; if that is done, thenCWP holders cannot carry legallyinto such restaurants. The billhas stiff penalties for violatingand a zero tolerance threshold foralcohol consumption. I voted infavor. The full Senate now has the

bill. Restructuring Eliminationof Budget and ControlBoard: On February 20, thefull Senate passed legislation(S. 22) creating the Departmentof Administration. There wassubstantial debate over movingprocurement to the Departmentof Administration under theGovernor or placing procurement

with a newly created StateFiscal Accountability Authoritycomposed of the Governor,Comptroller General, Treasurer,Ways and Means Chairman, and Senate Finance Chairman.By a vote of 27-18, the Senaterefused to place procurementunder the Department ofAdministration. I voted in favorof putting procurement under theDepartment of Administration.

    WorthlessIdols

    By Dr. Lynn Kirkland

Jon 2:8 Those who worshipworthless idols have abandonedtheir loyalty to you. Jon 2:9 But I will sing praises toyou; I will offer you a sacrifice anddo what I have promised. Salvationcomes from the LORD!

In this day and age ofundocumented access toknowledge have believers inthe Good News of Jesus Christactually turned to worthless idols. If so what might some of those

idols be.TRADITIONS OF MEN Isa 29:13 The Lord said, Thesepeople claim to worship me, buttheir words are meaningless, and their hearts are somewhereelse. Their religion is nothing buthuman rules and traditions, whichthey have simply memorized.

A friend of mine recently said,as we were practicing our musicfor worship service that untilhe started actually reading thewords of the music in order tolearn the chord changes that hedid not know how beautiful andmeaningful many songs are. Hewent on to say that many were justmemorized tunes that he knew alltoo well. How many times have youlooked at the church bulletin tosee what the last song was that yousung?

You really thought I was goingto lay into the more liturgicaldenominations here didnt you?Sorry, but I know up close andpersonal the many horror storiesof pastors having to leave churchesbecause a vase was moved, orshrub cut down. I know stories ofcertain songs not being sung on aparticular Sunday and the Pastoreventually left because of it.

Bulletins. No bulletins. Styleof music. Volume of music.Order of service... I could go onand on. Are these things reallyimportant? What about your nextdoor neighbor with the live in girlfriend Do they know Jesus? Whatabout the people you work witheveryday? Have you ever prayedfor an opportunity to share yourfaith in Jesus Christ with them?Have you taken advantage of that

    opportunity when it presented

itself. According to most surveys, facts, and figures for the last sixtyyears No you have not! Or, atleast, 98% of those of you actuallyreading this column right nowhave not.

I was just talking with a pastorlast week that told me local churchtraditions trumps what the Biblesays 95% of the time.

In one of the surveys I do inOutreach Training asks, If youcould design the ideal church foryou what would it look like? Doyou know that lost people have abetter handle on church thanprofessing believers? They talkabout acceptance, understanding, and the love of Jesus. Neverbuildings and rarely style of music.

THE DEMON MAMMON Luk 16:9 And I say to you,Make to yourselves friends by theunrighteous mammon, that whenit fails they may take you into theeternal dwellings. Luk 16:10 He faithful in the leastis also faithful in much. And heunrighteous in the least is alsounrighteous in much. Luk 16:11 Then if you werenot faithful in the unrighteousmammon, who will entrust thetrue to you? Luk 16:12 And if you were notfaithful in that of another, who willgive to you that which is yours? Luk 16:13 No servant is able toserve two lords; for either he willhate the one, and he will love theother; or he will cling to one, andhe will despise the other. You areunable to serve God and mammon.

The devil has told another lie tobelievers. We are told that moneyin itself is not evil. Its all in howyou use it. Yet churches andindividuals continue to fill theirbarns [bank accounts, 401ks,stocks, etc., etc.] with money whilethe world around us goes to hell.

Jesus spoke of the god Mammon.Note the little g or demon. Nodoubt we are to provide for ourfamilies. And, if we all trulyfollowed the Biblical model ofstewardship there would be nohomeless, or hungry, or needy except for those that chose to be so.

Biblical stewardship is a wholenuther message. Today we

just want to ask: Who do youserve? No matter what you maysay publically or however you

justify your actions, deep downinside, you know the truth. God or

    Mammon?

    MATERIALISMEver seen the bumper sticker,

He who dies with the most toyswins.? Cars, boats, campers, lake houses, mountain housesIn excess, I could go on and on.Anything. Anything that comesbefore our Jesus is an idol!

Jesus said that He was the Way,the Truth, and the Life and thatno one comes to the Father exceptthrough Him. Toys do not make uswinners!WHAT ABOUT THOSEMESSAGES ON HOPE?

Jesus is the answer. No matterwhat the question. Jesus is theanswer. Jesus is our hope, evenwhen we walk through thosedeep, dark valleys of life. Jesus

is our hope on those mountaintop experiences as well as in thevalleys.

I cant say it enough. Jesusis our hope. Not the Presidentor Republicans or Democratsor Libertarians or Jesus isthe answer. No matter what thequestion. Jesus is the answer.Jesus is our hope, even when wewalk through those deep, darkvalleys of life. Jesus is our hope onthose mountain top experiences aswell as in the valleys.

Byrd Elementary School teachersrecently were asked to remainafter school for a workshop.

That turned to be a friendly trickby principal russell gunte andfirst-grade teacher Jodia Lintne.

To the faculty members surpriseand delight, when Lintner adjusteda screen, their former colleagueSaah Andea was speaking tothem via the Internet throughSkype.

For the past five months, Andreahas lived in The Gambia as aPeace Corps volunteer and will

remain there well into 2014.The Byrd teachers cheered

and waved a lot, grateful for thechance to see their friend.

Andreas assignment is totrain teachers. She wrote in aletter to many friends that sheand another volunteer, Jo-Jo,concentrated on read-alouds to

help the teachers become moreprepared for teaching content andimplementing literacy in math, science and social studies.

Sarah taught at Byrd ElementarySchool for several years aftercollege. Then she embarked onthis life-changing mission thatresulted in moving to the WestAfrican country for 27 months.

Why did she do it?In her first letter to friends

and family months ago, Andreadescribed her fulfill ing life inAiken, but said she felt the need tomake a change.

After some research, Andreadecided that the Peace Corpswas the best choice. Therewould be other volunteers andstaffers who could help her get

through the transition process.During her training, Andreaworked on learning Pulaar, themost prevalent language in TheGambia.

Her monthly updates since herarrival are filled with informationand moving stories in detail thatone might expect from a dedicatedteacher. She lives in the villageof Koba Kundo, which has noelectricity or running water. The

residents rely on a communal tap,and Andrea has learned to carrywater on her head.

    Andrea was charmed by a

naming ceremony in the village, which usually is held seven daysafter a babys birth. This time, the volunteers were given theirown ceremony. Her host sister,

Maimuna, asked Andrea to wearher own wedding outfit whichAndrea describes as a Disney-likebubble gum pink top, with theskirt embellished with flowers, sequins and more.

Her Gambian name is Sira Bah,named after her host mother. Allthe children call out Sira whenshe walks out her door.

Gambia has made some strides tomove toward modernization. Still,
