PROJECTS EXHIBITIONS AND DISPLAYS Celebrating Age Through this programme of creative engagement with the over 55s, we cultivate new ways of thinking about ageing and work to make Middlesbrough a positive place to grow older. Sessions happen in community spaces within Thirteen accommodation. Creative Age Tile Installation Our ceramic tile installation was designed by Creative Age with contributions from Mini MIMA, mounted in situ by the group during Dementia Action Week. Every tile is a unique collage with a composition made through games based on chance. In MIMA’s second floor accessible toilet. Cleveland Police, Community Safety Hub Comission Artist David Lisser has been working with young people to imagine future foods and environments. A new work will be sited in public spaces at the Community Safety Hub. Fragile Earth A season of displays and events about the relationships between plants, animals and humans at a time of climate crisis. Fragile Earth: seeds, weeds, plastic crust 29 Jun – 26 Sep Our summer exhibition deals with the most urgent topic of the day: climate change. It shows how artists help us connect with and understand the effect of climate change. The exhibition includes works from the 1970s to today by 19 artists from across the globe, with video, installation, drawing and sculpture. New commissions engage with the characteristics of the Tees Valley. Art in Action On-going Reflecting the voices, stories and experiences of the extraordinary people we work with, the Art in Action display shares projects that contribute to life in our area. Why Are We Here? With Black Artists & Modernism Until Mar 2020 This display of the Collection shows works not seen since they were collected alongside well-known pieces. It uncovers stories about why artworks are here, who made them and how they have been seen. Research group Black Artists & Modernism recently audited the collection for contributions by artists of African, Caribbean, Asian and Middle East and North Africa Region descent living or working in Britain since 1900 and this research informs the display. This season, a portable garden moves from MIMA to North Ormesby, Teesside University’s campus and National Trust site Ormesby Hall. The Barrow is designed by Wayward, an innovative landscape, art and architecture practice. It is a place for making, swapping, plotting and talking about the environment and the future of the area and its communities. Part of Wayward’s project ‘The People’s Winter Garden’ with MIMA. Image: Uriel Orlow, Soil Affinities, 2018 © Uriel Orlow/DACS 2019 Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art has a civic agenda to put art into action. We connect art, people and ideas. We work with communities to address current issues within politics, economics and culture. Our programmes encompass urgent themes such as climate change, migration, inequality, ageing and wellbeing. We offer changing exhibitions, collection displays, learning activities, projects and community- focused initiatives that involve many artists and publics. These programmes promote creativity for everyone in ordinary life, through education, debate and making. Part of Teesside University, we play a key role in the cultural life of the Tees Valley and wider North East. Our ambition is that a range of constituents shape who we are: a public site, open and accessible, diverse and inclusive and used by all. LAURA SILLARS, DIRECTOR The environment has been a concern for artists from the 1800s onwards and throughout 2019 we continue to pay attention to this era-defining issue. Our summer season presents local, national and international artistic responses to ecological change through the exhibition Fragile Earth: seeds, weeds, plastic crust and an extensive public programme of talking, making and exploring the Tees Valley with communities, artists and environmental specialists. Our exhibition and public programme consider what we can do as communities of interested and dedicated people in the face of massive change which has seen wildlife demise and human activity endanger, damage and make extinct habitats, animals, plants and organisms. We look at shared understandings of different scales of ecological life both within the exhibition and through sustainable growing projects within the Tees Valley.
