Course Descri ption:This course will examine films that depict various religions and spiritual issues. You

will watch films, discuss the films, do experiential exercises that will help you

understand and appreciate the messages of the films, and write papers discussing what

you have learned from the films and how you can utilize this knowledge in your effort

to better understand yourself and other people and how we all relate to one another

    spiritually.

This course is part of the film studies minor. It is important to observe that this is not

a course focused on studying film-making techniques or evolutions in the film-making

industry. This is a social work course designed to help refine your thinking and

knowledge of how human beings behave and why they relate the way they do to one

another in a variety of social settings. Films are used to help you develop this

    understanding.

Course Objectives:This course is all about developing your critical thinking skills. The objectives of this

course are to enhance your self-awareness regarding: (a) how films have influenced

the way you think about spiritual issues, (b) how you can utilize these influences

effectively in relating with others, and (c) how you can take a proactive role in

changing the way society and Hollywood view spiritual issues.

Cour se Requi rements and Assignments:1. Attendance Policy:This is an Internet based course that requires that you

regularly contact the instructor and other class members in order to discuss thecourse material. If you fail to respond to the questions posed via e-mail, that is

the same as being absent from the class and you will have one point deducted from

your grade for every time you fail to respond. You are to use your MTSU e-mail

account, not your personal account, in keeping in touch with Dr. Frost.

    2. Textbook and Readings:Your textbook is The New American Spirituality by

Elizabeth Lesser. In addition you will read the handouts and websites attached to

this syllabus. You will be required to explore the Internet related to the course

topic and share your findings with your classmates. Additionally, you will read at

least one of the books on which a movie was based such as The Last Temptation

of Christ by Kazanzakis orMeetings with Remarkable Menby Gurdjieff.

    3. Grading:

    100-90points=A 89-80=B 79-70=C 69-60=D 59 or below = F4. Assignments:

You will submit, via e-mail, six short papers discussing what you have learned from

the films and how you can utilize this knowledge in your effort to better understand

yourself and other people. You will have a major paper dealing with the same

concerns but focusing on the book and movie that you have selected to concentrate

upon. You will have an examination covering the readings attached to the syllabus.

You will not be tested on the course textbook as this is an optional resource for your

    use.

Each of the small papers is worth up to 10 points, the large paper is worth up to 30

points, and the test is worth up to 10 points for a total of 100 points.

Class due dates:You have twelve class sessions and twelve movies to watch. So this

is a rather tight schedule. Start reading the material on my website right away. As

soon as you watch a film or two, sit down at the computer and type up a one page

reaction paper and email that to me at [email protected]. Remember you have only

six short reaction papers, so you may want to talk about more than one film per paper.

You must write about all twelve movies that you watch. I have deliberately not set

any due dates and not told you what order to watch the movies in so that you have

flexibility---however, it is very important that you begin the process at the start of this

summer session and complete it by the end of the session.Any students needing to make arrangements for special considerations in graded

assignments due to disabil it ies, including learn ing disabil i ties, are encouraged to

discuss these arrangements with the instructor .

Cour se Topics:The course will help you begin to think critically about the movies that you watch.

As Drs. Linda Elder and Richard Paul have stated: "Most people don't develop their

thinking. One way to put this point is to say that most people do not know how to

discipline their thinking. Most of their ideas about the world have come into their

minds without their having thought about them. They unconsciously pick up what

the people around them think. They unconsciously pick up what is on television orin the movies. They unconsciously absorb ideas from the family they were raised in.

They are the products, through and through, of forces they did not choose. They

reflect those forces without understanding them."

"To become a critical thinker is to reverse the process, by learning to practice skills

that enable one to start to take charge of the ideas one has about the world. It is to

think consciously and deliberately and skillfully about that world. It is to begin to

  • 7/27/2019 Middle Tennessee State University Social Work Department

    3/9

remake one's own mind. It is to develop a mind that is analogous to the body of a

person that is physically fit. It is like a puppet that discovers the strings, and figures

out how to gain control of the way they are pulled."

The papers you write should reflect this beginning skill at critical thinking. Below

you will find a student paper that will give you an example of how your papers

should reflect the content of this course and your newly developing skills at criticalthinking related to the movies you consume.

    Student Example Paper

The movies that you will watch that will help you develop your critical thinking skills

and apply them to the realms of religion and spirituality are:

Brother Sun, Sister Moon; Elmer Gantry, Defending Your Life, The Last Temptation

of Christ, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Mission, The Apostle, Gandhi, All that Jazz,

Hamlet, The Crucible, and The Sixth Sense. These movies are all on reserve at theMTSU Learning Resource Center. However, if you would prefer, you can also go to

your local movie rental store and, therefore, you can even take the course from a

distant location without having to come onto campus.

The above are the core required movies. However, other movies are on reserve at the

Learning Resource Center and additional non-fiction videotapes are also on reserve

that will assist you in your learning.

Listed below are the readings and websites for this course. Any underlined and

highlighted item, when clicked upon, will take you to the attached reading or website.Every required movie that you watch has one or more readings. It is recommended

that you read the handout before you watch the movie. Remember that you are

expected to read ALL of the handouts, not just the ones related to the movies you

    watch.

    Advanced Cinematherapy

Like their earlier book, Cinematherapy: The Girls Guide to Movies for Every Mood, Nancy Peske and

Beverly Wests Advanced Cinematherapy: The Girls Guide to Finding Happiness One Movie at a Time

(Dell, N.Y., 2002) has to be read with a sense of humor as it is not meant to be some profound

statement about serious therapy. However, it is a good source for helping you develop your thinkingabout movies and the impact that they can have on you---both positive as well as negative.

The authors contend that women watch movies differently than guys do. For us, movies are more

than just entertainment: theyre self-medication that can help cure anything from an identity crisis to

the codependent blues (p. xi). Some men, me included, would contend that men are capable of using

movies in the same manner as women. However, as a general rule, I think that it would be hard to

disagree with Peske and West that women tend to get different reactions out of the movies. It is an

interesting theory and might very well help explain things about both movies and the people who watch

    them.

However, that is not what the book is all about. The book is telling the reader that you can use films as

therapy---literally. That if you are in need of a particular type of help, then you can select a movie that

will zero in on that problem area and help you pop out of the funk that you might have fallen into. I

think that if you are mired in a serious clinical depression, you are not as likely to get substantial help

from watching a comedy; however, for the rest of us garden variety neurotics the point they make is a

    valid one.

For example, one of the movie divas that they recommend is Mae West. Mae West, who created the

mold for opinionated, self-directed, full-figured heroines who take what they want from the world and

dont make any apologies makes a fascinating role model and watching her in action in some flick like

My Little Chickadee (1940) could have a variety of refreshing and therapeutic results (p. 9). They alsoprovide the reader with some of Maes lines from her movies such as: Its not the men in your life that

counts, its the life in your men (from Im No Angel) and Whenever Im caught between two evils, I

take the one I never tried. (from Klondike Annie).

    Codependency Movies

The sections in their book deal with some very important issues. For example, they have a section on

codependency where they recommend movies such as The Day of the Locust and Casino---both

excellent examples of how not to develop a meaningful relationship.

Within this category they have a sub-category about codependency with bad boys. If youre feeling

tempted to indulge in a codependent and highly toxic love affair with a bad boy, watch one of these

movies and savor the feast of dysfunction without having to pay the emotional tab (p. 23). They then

recommend such films as Star 80 and Love Me or Leave Me (based on the life of singer Ruth Etting) and

Badlands (based on the life of Charles Starkweather and Caril-Ann Fugate).

    Understanding your man movies

Where did he get the idea that intimacy is a four-letter word? Why cant he understand that football is

not the only metaphor for life? How can you convince him that commitment is not a skin rash, and why

cant he get it through his thick head that asking for directions is not an indication of fundamental

gender confusion?...trying to puzzle out whats going on in those thick heads of theirs can give us all an

emotional migraine. Fortunately, we have the moves to help us see the world through our guys eyes

and understand the method behind his madness. So if youre having trouble getting a handle on what

makes your man tick, watch one of these Understanding Your Man Movies guaranteed to cure your

cant live with em, cant shoot em blues, and give you the clues youll need to solve the mystery of the

    opposite sex (p. 48).

One of the movies in this category is Taxi Driver. They see this movie as a classic example of the weird

love affair that guys have with cinematic down-and-outers. There is something about a disenfranchised

and iconoclastic underdog who drops out of life, shaves his head, purchases a weapon on the black

market, and starts boning up on his assassination skills that just makes a guys heart go pitter-pat (p.

49). I would contend that the something relates to how a lot of men are angry about having to try to

be someone they dont want to bebut that is another story and it relates to Hillmans book The SoulsCode. Two recent movies they list in this category are Patriot and Gladiator. They see them as gore fests

that pissed them off and I can fully appreciate their attitude toward these films. However, in each of the

films there is a very important and critical moment in which the hero is being goaded to action by the

villain and instead of giving into their emotions they each practice anger management. Sure, later they

kill the villain, but it is those key moments that you want to get your boyfriend to pay attention to how

important it is to develop anger management skills.

    Dysfunctional Family Movies

In this category we find Whats Eating Gilbert Grape and Mosquito Coast amongst others.

    Overcoming Loss Movies

The Sweet Hereafter, The Hurricane, Tender Mercies, and Dead Calm are found in this category.

    Searching for Greater Meaning Movies

Chocolat, Oh, God!, Forrest Gump, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Last Temptation of Christ The Sixth

Sense, Pay it Forward, Patch Adams, Holy Smoke, The Life of Brian, Monty Python and the Holy Grail,

Monty Pythons The Meaning of Life and Brother Sun, Sister Moon are in this category.

    Control Issue Movies

Cast Away and Ordinary People are in this category.

And Justice Will Prevail: Reassurance Movies

The Shawshank Redemption, Pacific Heights, and The Winslow Boy are in this category.

    Role Model Movies

Remember, this is a book by women for women so the role models they are looking for are female. The

movies in this category include Fargo, Elizabeth, Erin Brockovich, The Messenger and The Miracle

Worker. That last film provides you with an absolutely fabulous role model as the story is based on the

life of Annie Sullivan who, with a lot of tough determination, teaches Helen Keller, who in real life thenwent on to become one of the greatest role models of all time. Patty Duke plays Helen as a child and

Anne Bancroft plays Annie her teacher. One of Bancrofts lines in the movie is: Its my idea of the

    original singiving up.
