Dear WDP Middle School Families, The arrival of May also signals the last newsletter of the school year. If you remember back to Septem- ber and the first newsletter, I wrote then about record enrollment numbers, but also confidence that we will deliver the same high quality school experience that has become synonymous with West De Pere. As you reflect upon the school year, I hope you feel that we have delivered on that promise. It’s been a great school year with many, many fantastic student and staff success stories! Couple more things to share this month include: Parent requests for class placement In past years, parent requests for class placement have been allowed at the middle school. This practice will continue for the 2018-2019 school year. Parent requests regarding class placement will be given full consideration if all of the following conditions have been met: 1. Requests must be communicated in writing to the principal no later than June 5, 2018. 2. Requests must be based on a specific educational need. 3. Requests should not reference an individual teacher by name. Rather, the request could reference a teaching style, a classroom environment, or some other special need. Every class placement request that satisfies all of the conditions described above will be given full con- sideration. However, the always-present potential for a high number of parent requests prevents us from guaranteeing any request. 8th grade Washington D.C. trip 8th grade students depart for Washington D.C. on Sunday, June 10. Phantom Phundamentals Update Students at West De Pere Middle School continue to impress the teachers and staff with their acts of character at school, in ex-tracurricular programs, and at home. Here are a few recent examples of the way that our students are demonstrating strong character. Daniel Izarraraz-Dyer, Grade 6, Displayed Honesty when he accidentally knocked over an experiment that belonged to some-one else in a different class period. Not only was he honest enough to tell the teacher, but he also wrote a very heartfelt apolo-gy note and placed it by the experiment. Miranda Leurquin, Grade 7, Displayed Honesty when she turned in some money that she found on her table when she came to class. Aidan Blasczyk, Grade 8, Exhibited Citizenship. Without someone asking, Aidan was picking up pieces of food in the car-peted hallway that were not his. He didn’t want the food getting smashed into the carpet.

French Club News: Poisson d’avril! French Club students gathered on Thursday, April 12 to celebrate the French holiday, Poisson d’avril. Poisson d’avril occurs every year on April 1 and is the French version of April Fool’s Day. The April Fool’s Day tradition stems from the 16th century when King Charles XIV switched France to the new Gregorian calendar. Prior to this, New Year’s had been celebrated from March 25 to April 1, according to the Roman calendar. Those who hadn’t heard about the move or who chose to continue to celebrate New Year’s on April 1 were made fun of as ‘fools’. In France, the common practical joke is to place a paper fish on the back of an unsuspecting ‘fool’ and yell “Poisson d’avril!” when the fish is discovered. At the French Club event, students decorated paper fish to display in the French class-room throughout the month of April, and they enjoyed goldfish crackers and Swedish fish as a treat. Several students also got “fished” and later discovered fish stickers on their backs!

The next French Club event will be held on Thursday, May 10 from 2:45-3:30 p.m. in the French classroom.

Meningococcal Vaccines for Preteens and Teens Why does my child need to be vaccinated?

Meningococcal vaccines help protect against the bacteria that cause meningococcal disease. These infections don’t happen very often, but can be very dangerous when they do. Meningococcal disease refers to any illness that is caused by Neisseria meningitidis bacteria. The two most severe and common illnesses caused by these bacteria include infections of the fluid and lining around the brain and spinal cord (meningitis) and bloodstream infections (bacteremia or septicemia).

Meningococcal disease can spread from person to person. The bacteria that cause this infection can spread when people have close or lengthy contact with someone’s saliva, like through kissing or coughing, especially if they are living in the same place. Teens and young adults are at increased risk for meningococcal disease. Meningococcal disease can become very serious, very quickly. The me-ningococcal vaccine is the best way to protect teens from getting meningococcal disease. When should my child be vaccinated?

All 11 to 12 year olds should be vaccinated with a single dose of a quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine. Older teens need a second shot when they are 16 years old so they stay protected when their risk is the highest. Teens who got meningococcal vaccine for the first time when were 13, 14, or 15 years old should still get the booster shot when they are 16 years old. If your older teen didn’t get the meningococcal shot at all, you should talk to their doctor about getting it as soon as possible. Talk with your teen’s doctor or nurse about meningococcal vaccination to help protect your child’s health.

Talk to your child’s doctor or nurse to learn more about meningococcal vaccines and the other vaccines that your child may need. You

can also find out more about these vaccines on CDC’s Vaccines for Preteens and Teens website at www.cdc.gov/vaccines/teens.

Scholastic Book Fair This year's Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success!! We were able to purchase a variety of new books for the li-brary. See you next year!

Wisconsin State Geography Bee Eighth grader Chris Coolidge made it back to Madison for the Wisconsin State Geography Bee on Friday, April 6th. After winning the Middle School Geography Bee, Chris took the State Geography Test. The high score he earned on the test qualified him to participate in the State contest for the 2nd time. The State competition included 100 participants from all over Wisconsin. He competed well in the competi-tion and we are so proud Chris was able to represent West De Pere Middle School two years in a row at State. Congratulations Chris!

Counselor’s Corner This time of year is always bitter sweet. We are excited about meeting our ‘new students’ when the fifth grade students transition to the middle school. We look forward to getting to know them over the next three years. As we bring in the new, though, so must we send out the ‘old.’ Our eighth grade students have been a part of us for the past three years which makes it difficult to see them leave. Watching our students grow up and move on is one of the toughest parts of working in a school. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors! Whether your child will be entering sixth grade, moving up to the High School, or any other grade, preparing him/her is very helpful and important. Some children will be affected more by a new transition than others. As one school year nears an end, think about these ideas to help transition your child to a new school year:

• Talk about the positives of entering a new grade: new teacher(s), new friends, and new opportunities.

• Address your child’s fears. Listen to and validate these fears and don’t ignore. Talk about your own fears when you were

that age.

• Consider resources- if you feel your child is experiencing high levels of anxiety about transitioning, consult available re-

sources (books, internet, and school counselor)

• Visit the school and classroom on the days allotted for visitation

Thank you for entrusting us with your children this past year. Have an adventurous and memory-filled summer with your family.

Spring Choir Concert The Spring choir concert will take place Monday, May 21 at 7:00 p.m. at West De Pere High School. Students should report to the high school warm up rooms by 6:40 p.m. Concert clothing is highly recommended for this event. Students should wear black on the bottom and white on the top with pink or blue accents. If possible, students should have black shoes or sandals and not tennis shoes or flip flops. This concert is a requirement for the choir students and is a part of their grade so every effort should be made for each choir student to attend. Please contact Mrs. Ribbens with any questions or concerns.

French Students Experience French History and Food Eighth grade French students traveled to Milwaukee on April 20, 2018 to experience Milwaukee’s French history and food. The day’s events were coordinated by Milwaukee-based company, Milwaukee Food & City Tours. On the tour, students were escorted by Milwaukee native tour guides and made the following stops:

• Pere Marquette Park : Students heard an overview of Milwaukee history.

• St. Joan of Arc Chapel on the Marquette University campus: This chapel was originally built in France in the 15th century, was moved to Long Island, New York in 1927, and was later relocated to Milwaukee in 1964. While in New York, the famous Joan of Arc Stone was added to the church. According to legend, Joan of Arc prayed before a statue of Mary, the mother of Jesus, while standing on this stone. At the end of her prayer, she would kiss the stone. Ever since, it has been colder than the stones surrounding it.

• Café Benelux in the historic Third Ward: Students enjoyed frites and dipping sauces.

• Lake Park Bistro: Students enjoyed a traditional French meal of beef bourguignon.

• North Shore Boulangerie: Students enjoyed traditional French croissants and had the opportunity to purchase other traditional French baked goods.

Students had a great time on the trip and were accompanied by French teachers, Madame VDB and Madame Kieler, as well as by Mrs. Schaefer, Mr. Milz, and Mrs. Van Price.

Careers/Entrepreneur/Family and Consumer Sciences The weather has not stopped the spirit of students in Careers/Entrepreneur/Family and Consumer Sciences. Each grade level has been en-gaged in learning about the work habits and attitudes essential to be successful at home, school, higher education, work world and commu-nity at large.

• A grant for a hydroponic garden was received from Farm to School Funds, Live 54218. The garden is in the Careers/Entrepreneur/Family and Consumer Sciences classroom, encouraging students to learn about hydroponic gardening and the importance of nurturing all forms of life. We started harvesting tomatoes in February and are continuing to do so. Students have enjoyed pollinating with a hand held fan, watering, harvesting and sharing the fruits of their labor.

• The Wisconsin Beef Council has awarded our school $250 to provide classroom instruction on beef. Students in 7th and 8th grade Family and Consumer Science classes have prepared recipes, sharing information with their families. Check out www.beeftips.org for useful ideas.

• Second semester, seven middle school Careers/Entrepreneur/Family and Consumer Science classes took part in a Purdue University field testing of “The Story of Your Dinner, ” featured at the Partnership for Food Safety Education website. (www.fightbac.org) The grades 6-8 students enjoyed learning about the process of field testing a program, collecting data and analyzing the results.
