In the Time For Kids article “Meet Young Immigrants,” Asya tells us she and her family immigrated from Nikolae, Ukraine to a suburban town near Atlanta when she was just a baby.

celebrating Christmas on January 7 and a heavier, unforgettable amount of traffic exists in Ukraine. In the following paragraphs, Asya describes her feelings towards both countries. Asya misses her grandmother and feels like home in Ukraine, but she enjoys the United States because she is so active and has many friends. Finally, Asya is unsure where she will live when she is older, but is leaving the decision making process up to her parents.

I am impressed with how optimistic and well rounded Asya seems with her interview. Being bilingual is impressive, but being able to completely immerge herself into America lifestyle seems overwhelming to me. I’m sure she has had some hard times learning to transition, but I think she is lucky to have moved when she was so young. She was probably more accommodating for her parents than she would have been if they moved her now or when she was in middle school. I am impressed with Asya’s attitude and energy for all of her hobbies. I am also glad she gets to communicate with her grandmother so much from back home, because that seems to be her favorite!

Literally, this quote would mean you carried someone’s else’s heart in your own, which would require two surgeries and some serious pain for both parties involved. Because this poem is supposed to be about love – and not causing pain- we have to think about the words figurative. If you want to carry someone’s heart in your own, it would be because you want that person closest to you at all times. You want them constantly on your mind and knowing that you care about them.

The picture above is my interpretation of the poem. I was feeling sad to be leaving my parents a few months ago as I - once again- made plans to move across the country. While these partings are

becoming less dramatic, I still get the same hole in my heart when I leave my parents. I saw this quote and the words were so comforting to me. On my last day, instead of packing like I should have been, I posted up on the couch and made this for my pops. The hummingbird represents me. I often stress about being too scatterbrained and my pops always calms me by reminding me I’m his hummingbird. He tells of how I’ve always fluttered around mentally and physically, even as a little girl. He somehow makes my cobwebbed thoughts sound magically appealing. That must be the power of dads. Oh well, birds are his favorite animal, so this is fine by me.

Dear Students,I am visiting my family in Cincinnati for a

couple of weeks. I will be back on Monday, September 22. I am relieved to be home with my family and hopefully will be able to help out around the house, even if it’s just helping to eat the food in the fridge! Only teasing, I’ve got my name written all over the laundry. Anyways, at the same time as being thankful to be here, I am trying to not freak out that we haven’t even started our reading logs or first novel!

I have been trying to think of some creative ways to teach you since I am so far away, like show you some photos of where I live. Speaking of which, my mom and I were going through our collection of photos, and I found some goodies I MUST share with you. I will save some for the my All About Me project, but these photos are of my two family members who passed away this week. Check out these photos on the next couple pages.

Ed’s final story was how he recently set off the fire alarm at the hospital. According to him, he was turning the heat up.

Greg was ten years old when my mom was born. She used to visit him in California and make her friends line up to prove he was real when he came home.

Even though I was missing information, I could still get

started.

Greg had three girls: Gen, Kelli,

and Erin.

Greg loved baseball as a kid, football as an adult, and had the coolest chess set ever.

Greg taught me to play chess, pool, and FreeCell.

Three goals I have for myself are…

Three goals I have for myself are to make attainable goals, to develop a weekly routine, and to work out early in the morning, even if I am tired, weak, or grumpy.

I recently was reminded of SMART goals, a term had forgotten since middle school when they were introduced. I make to-do lists with over 50 times on them and then get scared to look back at the list. I think I take everything in my mind and put it on paper, which is fine, but I need to focus on prioritizing. I think using SMART goals will help.

I’ve tried many, many times but have yet to tackle a weekly routine. I get bored after three days of predicting my morning or evening. I envy people who can regulate their activities and chores. As soon as I see a routine, I think I intentionally mess it up. I know it would be a helpful balance and I’d enjoy the routine after the initial hump of frustration, so I will focus on a

routine for October. Finally, I just read an article that explains how

people benefit by working out in the morning. They are more focused at work and less restless, which makes sense. I always amp my brain up to workout at night, but it’s a relief when I’m finishing my run at 6am! I want more of those!
