Students and Parents:
Our Leadership Program is designed to provide opportunities for all our students to develop their leadership skills. This Activities and Leadership Guide is our attempt at summarizing many of these opportunities. The breadth of the offerings is also a testament to the commitment of our staff to the development of our students. Our hope is that all Middle School students will consider ways in which they can develop their leadership skills and will use this guide in planning their year’s activities.
On behalf of the staff, I encourage all students to be involved in activities over the year that touch on all five streams. The list of activities is not set in stone. At the time of publication, this list is our best estimate of what we will be able to offer. Addi-tional opportunities will be announced during the school year. Above all, don’t be limited by what appears in this booklet. We are always eager to discuss ideas students have to develop their own leadership activity.
Get involved! Seize the day! Contribute to the life of the school and to your own personal development. It will help you to have a great year at the Middle School.
Xavier Abrioux, Director of Middle School

Leadership at SMUS We believe that leadership is a process of engagement that moves people to understanding and action in an environment inspired by trust. SMUS is committed to supporting each student in their journey to becoming a leader. Just like academics, arts and athletics, all our students can benefit from having the experience of leadership and opportunities and training to develop their potential as a leader. The foundation of the leadership program is based on the following four pillars: Service, Honesty, Respect, Courage
Five Streams of Leadership
The program is based on five streams that are important in the development of good leadership. Throughout this booklet, you will see the following icons and notice that they are shaded differently depending on the activity. Below is an explanation of the meaning of each. When an activity is meeting the goals of the stream, the icon is shaded.
S
Service - To foster a culture of service, citizenship and responsibility at SMUS, students participate in meaningful service to others.
Su
Sustainability - Focusing on environmental issues, increasing our awareness and decreasing our envi-ronmental impact.
G
Global Responsibility - Appreciating that there is a world beyond us; a world we are a part of, and one that we can – and should – play an active role in improving.
P
Principles of Leadership - The theoretical and ethical foundation for solid leadership practice.
E
Experiential Education - Providing students with opportunities to learn through doing, to reflect on their experiences and to apply their learning to oth-er situations in the outdoors or in the classroom.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS TEAMS/CLUBS
Our goal for Grades 6-8 is to provide a variety of athletic op-portunities over the course of the year, as well as prepare stu-dents for sports at the Senior School level. With our main em-phasis on participation, sportsmanship, citizenship and a quali-fied coaching staff, we do our utmost to provide a positive ath-letic experience for our students during their time at the Middle School. Being part of a school sports team is a great way for students to stay active, get to know people and develop athletic and leadership skills.

The Physical Education program for Grade 8 students at SMUS is, we believe, one of a kind. While the program follows many traditional Physical Education programs found in most schools, we also offer a very wide variety of non-traditional activities. In the 10-day cycle, students receive Physical Educa-tion seven times. Each period is 50 minutes in length. Of these seven periods, two of those are double blocks giving the stu-dents two 100-minute periods. These large blocks of time allow us to either take students off campus for various activities, or bring guest instructors in. Some examples of the types of activities that are offered to our Grade 8 students are water polo, gymnastics, martial arts, squash, jazzercise, curling, hip hop dance, tennis, golf, lawn bowls, fitness and strength training.

SERVICE DAY
The Middle School encourages each student to have a meaningful service experience off campus each year. At the Middle School, a day is organized to have students in each grade off campus serving within the community. SMUS is dedicated to developing partnerships with organizations, encouraging our students to develop an awareness and understanding of the needs of our community and helping students discover how they can contribute. Students will have the opportunity to spend time with seniors at an elderly care facility, participate in a variety of environmental services, volunteer at the food bank or homeless shelter, or help in the classroom at a local elementary school. These activities are chaperoned by Middle School faculty and are coordinated by the Service department.

SERVICE LEARNING INITIATIVES
As a school which prepares students for “higher learning and for life” we believe community involvement is a crucial part of a SMUS education. Serving the needs of others is a core tenet of our program. We hope to broaden perspectives, and develop leadership skills and character traits in order to create good citizens. Three common themes and areas of support have developed at SMUS: Cancer Awareness Local Issues Global Issues Student-Led Initiatives If you and your friends are interested in initiating a service opportunity, the possibilities are endless. Our students support both local and global initiatives. Students will be asked to fill in the proposal form at the end of this guide, and to set up a meeting with Mrs. Haydock to discuss the proposal. Examples of past student initiatives are an awareness and fundraising campaign for Nepal (global) and a collection of personal items for Victoria Youth at Risk (local).
