    26 February 2010

    Reece High School

What a great start to the year. Whilst visiting classrooms during lesson times we see studentsengaged with their learning and making the most of their opportunities. This can also beobserved when walking around our grounds at break times. At the beginning of the year, stafflaunched the Reece High School values with their classes and it is pleasing to see that students

are showing respect for the school and taking responsibility for their learning in this way.

The Health & Wellbeing department are busy preparing students for the upcoming swimmingand surf carnivals. Students are making the most of our community facilities to practise forthese events and what better way to spend a lesson at this time of the year. As was stated inan earlier Bulletin the upgrade to the gym facilities is complete and as the weather cools staffand students will make good use of this increased indoor space. Since returning to this site wehave now re-developed the football oval, the soccer grounds and the gym. The final stage ofthis plan is to upgrade the court area.

Any improvement to grounds or buildings of course requires money and as a school

community we need to raise those funds if we are to complete the sporting facilities upgrade. Our opportunity to do this comes with the Breath of Life Music Festival. This takes place onMarch 27th. The festival is a major fundraising initiative for the Australian Lung Foundationhowever the School Association has responsibility for catering during the concert. You canassist by either offering time to help on any of the food stalls or by purchasing a ticket to theconcert. Remember any money raised through this event comes to the School Associationand will directly benefit you child. As well our students will have the opportunity to participatein workshops with Diesel on Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th March. Please help us andspread the word.

The Annual General Meeting for the School Association will take place on Thursday March

18th. Our current Chairperson, Mrs Karen Smith, will retire from the position at this time.We encourage all parents to become part of our association but in particular we really needsomeone to take on the role of Chairperson. In itself the time required to fulfil this role isnot great and we truly value the contributions of those parents who are able to contribute tothe school in this way. Whilst on the subject of the School Association, I would like topublically thank those members who have undertaken the organisation for the Breathe of Lifeconcert catering. It has been a huge responsibility and they are doing an outstanding job. It ismuch appreciated.

    2010

The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is scheduled tocontinue in 2010. All students in years 7 and 9 are to be assessed using common nationaltests in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) andNumeracy.

The scheduled dates for the tests are Tuesday 11 May, Wednesday 12 May and Thursday13 May. Parents/carers do have the right to withdraw their children from testing. The Par-ent/Carer Withdrawal form is available from the Department of Education web site.

The national tests will provide information on how students are progressing against nationalminimum standards of literacy and numeracy skills expected for each year level, as well asperformance across the whole range of student abilities. The results will support improve-ments in teaching and learning.

You will receive an individual report that shows your childs results which will give a com-parison of your childs performance against all other Australian students in their year level. The report will indicate how your child performed in comparison to the national averageand the levels of achievement expected at that year level.

A parent information brochure will be distributed to families prior to the week of testing. For more information about the tests, including test samples, frequently asked questionsand test schedule, you can visit the following websites:
