Reason for Settlement
• The King of England gave this colony to his brother James, The Duke of York, for farming.
• New York was first settled by the Dutch.

• They were Christians.• Not many churches.• Some people who
went to church would sometimes stay for the whole day.

• Because proprietors lived in England, it was difficult for them to control their faraway property

• Most children in the middle colonies learned how to read and write, but many colonists believed that it was most important for children to learn useful work skills
