AEE Mid-Atlantic WELCOME! Inspired by the apple of the AEE logo, the 2018 Conference theme, “The Apples Never Fall Very Far from the Tree,” is intended to remind us all of the diverse “fruits” that grow from the “tree” of AEE, and encourage us to celebrate

each other and our advocacy of experiential education. What apples will you harvest this weekend? The Mid-Atlantic Region encompasses the following U.S. states: Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, and Washington D.C. Our region unifies individuals from a variety of fields: including schools and colleges, museums, therapeutic recreation centers, camps and conference centers, and outdoor recreation venues. We, as the Mid-Atlantic Region, strive to promote and support the vision of AEE. This vision connects a global community of educators and practitioners, and it expands their capacity to enrich lives through experiential education. AEE is currently leading the way in experiential education nationwide and they will need our continuous support and efforts in making a difference in the lives of many. We hope that you will join our AEE family in webinars, local events, and more. This is an incredibly valuable opportunity to create a wider network, grow as a professional, and spread the word about AEE. We are so glad you’ve joined us for this event, and we look forward to seeing you as often as possible!

The Science Behind the Sport – Teaching STEM Based Curriculum Related to Adventure Activities 3 hour workshop presented by Andrew Hoover 9 am-1 pm Location: Meet at RED Yurt The significance of science and engineering careers in an ever-growing technological world is irrefutable; yet encouraging today’s youth to pursue STEM education is a challenge. On a related note, health and wellness is of increasing concern as childhood obesity rates continue to have an upward trend. WVU has created the Science Behind the Sport initiative to address these contemporary issues. Using the excitement of outdoor adventure sports like cycling, zip-lining and rock climbing, this workshop will explore practical applications of STEM and how these concepts apply to each respective adventure activity. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in learning experiences that will help translate these activities into real, relevant and hands-on experiential activities for students. In this workshop, you will learn how to make fundamental principles of math and science fun!

Aerial Adventure & Captive Audiences 3 hour workshop presented by Adventure WV & WVU Outdoor Education Center Staff 2pm-5pm Location: WVU Outdoor Education Center The aerial adventure industry is rapidly growing. To help differentiate between experiences, many operations have begun incorporating interpretive talks as a core component. Join the WVU Outdoor Education Center Staff as we zip among the trees and explore our approach to natural resource interpretation and presenting this unique learning environment. Believed to be the only university owned and operated zip-line canopy tour course in the world, the WVU Zip-Line Canopy Tour will serve as our classroom. Participants will have the opportunity to go zip-lining and experience our interpretive curriculum as we progress. Forest resource management, sustainability and other information about the WVU Research Forest will be discussed as we zip. Once the activity is complete, time will be spent answering questions and exploring how an interpretive curriculum can be utilized in other aerial adventure activities. This is a great opportunity for anyone seeking an unique experience as

part of their conference stay. To learn more about the WVU Zip-Line Canopy Tour, please follow the link below. Information and statistics regarding our facility are provided. *Participants are encouraged to explore the WVU Zip-Line Canopy Tour website to learn more about the tour - and our conditions barring participation* https://adventurechallenge.wvu.edu/our-facilities/zip-line-canopy-tour.

Climbing Site Management: A Roundtable Discussion 3 hour workshop presented by Kevin Shon 2pm-5pm Location: WVU Cooper’s Rock State Forest Adventure WV’s own Kevin Shon, climbing programs manager, will host a tour of nearby climbing resource Cooper’s Rock. Participants will see the prominent climbing program areas within the State Forest, engage in meaningful discussion with peers regarding best/accepted practices for their outdoor climbing programs, and have the opportunity to review and brush up on basic climbing rescue systems including rescues and lowers. You are encouraged to bring a copy of your climbing programs manual or any other administrative resources to facilitate sharing and learning among colleagues.

*WVU can provide climbing shoes, harnesses, helmets and other PPE and will supply all ropes and other hard/soft goods. Your own PPE and climbing shoes are encouraged.

Keynote Speaker: Greg Corio

Saturday March 24, 12:30 pm

West Virginia University - Student Recreation and Outdoor Education Greg Corio is the Executive Director for Student Recreation and Outdoor Education at West Virginia University

in Morgantown, W.Va. Corio is responsible for all of campus recreation at WVU including a 177,000 square foot recreation center, a large intramural and club sport program and Adventure WV, an outdoor program at WVU. While pursuing his master’s degree, Corio developed the Adventure WV program as part of his graduate work. This project focused on creating an outdoor orientation program that addressed students’ transition to college through experiential outdoor education and adventure experiences. In 2017 it was the largest Outdoor Orientation Program in the country. The program has grown to include leadership and adventure travel experiences for students at all levels in college at WVU. Corio’s creativity also gave way to an earlier development. In 1999 he invented an artificial ice-climbing wall. He sold the product to Entre Prises. Corio has also worked in adventure tourism where he was able to use his business management education, a degree he almost completed before changing his major to Recreation, Parks and Tourism Resources and earning his undergraduate and graduate degrees in this field at WVU. He also holds an associate degree in Adventure Sports Management from Garrett College.

As the frontman and primary songwriter for The New Relics, Michael J. Arbogast has written and recorded over 50 songs since 1998. His catalog crosses genres from jam-band to

singer-songwriter, rock, country and Americana. He has written entire albums of songs for up-and-coming regional talent and Nashville recording artists alike. His true passion is in creating emotionally resonant stories and weaving them into well-constructed musical arrangements. While touring the East Coast and sharing stages with groups like Zac Brown Band, Sawyer Brown, Craig Morgan, 311, Blessed union of Souls, The Alternate Routes, Wyclef and Pat McGee Band, Mike wrote and recorded 4 studio albums and 2 live albums with The New Relics. The band found commercial success in 2010 with the single release of “Beautiful,” charting as high as #54 on Billboard’s country music chart. Though many of The New Relics’ arrangements and instrumentation lean more toward Mike’s Texas Country idols like Pat Green and Randy Rogers Band, Mike found his voice by blending his favorite aspects of artists as varied as Amos Lee, Zac Brown, Train, Jason Isbell, John Mayer, Brad Paisley, and David Gray. At any given performance, audiences might experience heartwarming love songs, hard-hitting rock tunes, introspective ballads, and covers that range from obscure Americana tracks to unique arrangements of modern pop hits from Britney Spears and OutKast. The truth is: you never quite know what’s in store.

Structure, Schedule, and Style: How the 3 S’s Might Improve Your Collaborative Leadership

Kevin Shon Location: RED Yurt The three S’s: Structure, Schedule, and Style are arguably the very fabric behind what we do as experiential professionals. The dynamics of these three elements often go unnoticed in scenarios where we are left to teach alone. When it comes to team-based leadership, or co-instructional relationships, any one of these three elements can make or break the overall picture if left out of balance. We will take an hour and fifteen minutes to define, understand, and explore these three elements as they pertain to your leadership/ teaching paradigms. Whether you might be a classroom teacher, outdoor trip leader, or university administrative professional this workshop will give you new language for positively enhancing your ability to collaborate with others.

R

Mousetrap Trust Sequence Jessica R. Rothe, David M. Stump, Aster S. Minehart

Location: YELLOW Yurt Mouse Trap Trust Sequence is a non-traditional team-building experience that requires partners to come together to accomplish a simple goal that can be both challenging and intimidating. Starting with a beginner’s level difficulty, the participants aim to first work with a partner to achieve a goal of trust and team building with one another. On completion, participants advance to an intermediate level challenge that entails communication, leadership, and cooperation. The goal is to develop strong group dynamics, roles within the group, and trust between participants. Are you up to the challenge of not getting snapped by the trap?

She plans to continue my education eventually earning my PhD. She would love to have the opportunity to teach future outdoor professionals the importance of experiential adventure education. She sees it as a crucial element for development as a part of a team or as an individual. She thinks it is critical to stress the importance of going beyond your comfort zone to accomplish goals that may not have previously been attainable if you had not pushed yourself. David M. Stump David is a graduate of Radford University with a major in Recreation, Parks, and Tourism with a concentration in Outdoor Recreation and Leadership. He currently work for Radford University Adventure Based Learning Experience, where the focus of the organization is on building teamwork through communication; both verbal and nonverbal. This element focuses mainly on verbal communication. As this element expands and increases in complexity, participants have to trust each other and rely on teammates to guide them in the right direction. Aster S. Minehart Aster joined Radford University Adventure Based Learning Experience (RUABLE) her Sophomore year when she joined the Outdoor Recreation Department. Switching over has been one of the best decisions she has made so far in her 21 years. The knowledge and skills she has gained from RUABLE has been essential in her growth as a leader. She hopes to spread her love for the outdoors to others in an environment where others can enjoy themselves and grow.

The Humble Trainer– the Importance of Self-Reflection and Humility When Training Staff Scott Gray

Location: RED Yurt Humility is sadly becoming a lost virtue. It is not surprising that in an age when we are taught to “sell ourselves” and to curate our lives on Facebook, humility is not a valued attribute. We are conditioned to not let others know about our mistakes and to always feel good about ourselves. We often want to appear hyper competent and knowledgeable when we interact with new staff to show we are worthy of the title “trainer.” It is important for our trainees to have a high degree of faith in our ability to teach them. However, we also need to humanize ourselves to our trainees, making sure they are not intimidated by us and feel connected to us as trainers. Trainers need to avoid looking down on new staff and appearing as “gods” of their field of expertise. Otherwise, the trainer can become elevated to something they are not and can leave the trainee feeling inadequate or overwhelmed. Through this workshop, we will attempt to explore techniques to practice humility while still maintaining a high standard during training. By participating in various activities and exploring our mistakes in an emotionally safe environment, our attendees will evaluate their ability to practice humility in the training they lead.

Welcome Week—Programming on a Big Scale Nathan Harlan, Location: GREEN Yurt

From our perspective, Welcome Week at WVU came roaring out of left field. We didn't help create it at a conceptual level and we didn't push to be involved. If anything we tried to stay out of it... Yet here we are entering our 3rd year of it. Many institutions use adventure programming to help welcome their students to campus. Not everyone welcomes 5000 students at a time. Programming on such a large scale and with such cross campus collaboration has brought great opportunities and serious challenges. This session will look at both the successes and failures that we've encountered along the way. Specifically, we will address: -Institutional Context: WVU and Adventure WV -Welcome Week as a WVU Initiative: History, evolution and outcomes -Structures and Systems: How we've managed (and sometimes failed) to herd the cats -Lessons Learned: Transferable Lessons Learned
