Ausschreibung Soil Contest BGS Soil Contest to be held during the joint BGS / DBG congress 2019 in Bern Contestants, preferably teams consisting of early-career scientists of universities / universities of applied sciences, have to map and classify soils in the Bern area. Organizational details: Classification: WRB 2014 update 2015 The teams classify soils according to the WRB. Number of participants: roughly 40, one team consists of 4 to 6 members Number of soil pits: 4 to 6 Participants: BSc, MSc and doctoral students – proof of enrolment / status required upon registration). Excluded are students of the University of Bern / FH Bern (knowledge of regional soil conditions is too much an advantage). Action: Near the HAFL in Zollikofen, 4 profiles are prepared which can be reached on foot. The participants have one hour to determine each of the profiles. There may be two groups on one profile. In this case, the groups have 10-minute alternating time to characterize and classify the soils. Soil type, soil colour, carbonate, etc. can also be determined outside the profiles on samples taken by the groups. For mapping according to WRB, chemical parameters (CEC, salt content, etc.) are given on the profiles by means of tables. The results are documented by the groups in simplified protocols and submitted after 60 minutes. Then the groups will move on to the next profile. WRB and other means for soil characterization (magnifying glass, pocket knife, slope inclinometer if available) are to be brought along by the groups. Materials (HCl, H 2 O, sample containers, buckets, scales, spades, spatulas and Munsell plates) will be provided (but if you bring it with you, it is fine.). A PDF file will be sent to the participating groups the week before the contest. This file contains information on the geological structure of the Bern region and allows a rough classification of the soil development series to be expected in advance.
