I’m delighted to present our eleventh annual Microsoft Dynamics Salary Survey, the world’s largest and most comprehensive report on compensation in the Dynamics ecosystem

The report findings are collated from thousands of data points from Dynamics placements and registered vacancies made by Nigel Frank International between June 2018 and May 2019, as well as thousands of survey responses from the Dynamics community between March 2019 and May 2019.

Launching exclusively at Microsoft Inspire 2019 in Las Vegas, our report will help organizations understand how to attract and retain great Dynamics talent and allows Dynamics professionals to size up their salaries against industry standards. Each survey response has been validated using robust statistical analysis and automated data validation rules in order to be included in the final results set. Any data profiles that do not pass our validation rules and statistical analysis, or that are deemed questionable, incomplete, or duplicate, were removed to provide meaningful results.

Individual and personal salary information from survey responses is used in an aggregated and anonymized sense and is used solely for benchmarking purposes. No information given is in connection with any individual role or hiring decision.

The following should be taken into account when interpreting the data in this salary survey:

People reported an average of 15 years’ work experience overall, and on average 6 years’ experience working with Dynamics.

When asked about their experience working in the technology industry, 36% of professionals who took part in the survey had 10 years’ experience or less, while a further 38% had between 11 and 20 years of experience.

When it comes to experience with Dynamics products, respondents had the most experience with Dynamics AX (41%), Dynamics CRM (37%) and Dynamics NAV (33%).

Participants were asked how many years’ experience they had with the various Dynamics products. Respondents had the most experience with Dynamics AX (5 years) and Dynamics NAV (5 years), followed by Dynamics CRM (3 years).

EducationOur study found that 43% of participants hold at least a bachelor’s degree or equivalent. A third (34%) hold a master’s degree qualification or equivalent, while 3% hold a doctorate or professional degree. Almost 1 in 6 of our respondents (16%) haven’t studied at a college level or above.

Over half (52%) of the professionals surveyed hold a certification.

Among those respondents that do hold certifications, almost half held a certification that has now been retired. Over a third (34%) of professionals hold the Business Applications certification, while 21% have earned a newer, role-based Dynamics certification.

A third (34%) of the survey respondents are certified at the Expert level (i.e., MCSE), while 27% are certified to the Associate level. Only 4% of our survey respondents are a Microsoft MVP.

Half (49%) of permanently employed respondents believe they are well compensated for the work they do, while 51% felt that they were either undervalued or are unsure about how much they should be paid.

What are the benefits you’d like to receive?Unsurprisingly, monetary perks such as 13th month pay (36%) and bonus (30%) were the two most desirable benefits, followed by a quarter (25%) of respondents who would like a company car.

Almost a third (29%) of professionals who took part in the survey told us that they work from home at least one day a week, while 43% never work from home and are possibly not offered home working as a benefit.

Paid time off

Permanent employees who responded to the survey told us that they received on average 18 days paid time off (PTO) a year.

A small number (1%) of respondents reported receiving unlimited time off, provided it is cleared with their manager.

Employee retention

How satisfied are you with your job?

Participants were asked to rate their satisfaction with several work factors.

Dynamics professionals were most satisfied with the hours that they work (68%), their working location (67%) and their office environment (66%). According to the World Health Organization1, globally, most employees spend a third of their adult life at work, so it is positive that many of our respondents feel satisfied with their working environment and the time that they spend working.

The physical work environment and the number of hours worked can really have an impact on an employee’s happiness, and a recognition of this from an employer might well strengthen an employee’s loyalty with their employer.

Further down in respondents’ satisfaction ratings was their professional development. Around a third of respondents were dissatisfied with their training and development (34%) and career progression (32%) opportunities. Employees may be less likely to go the extra mile if they can’t see a progressive future with their employer. Instead employees might feel like the only way to progress is to move to another organization.

Only around half (54%) of respondents are satisfied overall with their job, with 14% dissatisfied and a further third (32%) feeling neutral about their current role—a potentially worrying ratio for employers in such a candidate-scarce market.

64% of our survey respondents feel valued at work. When employees feel valued, they’re more likely to remain loyal and committed to their organization. Feeling valued has been shown to improve employees’ job satisfaction, often resulting in improved performance and reduced turnover2.

More than two fifths (43%) of permanent employees who responded to the survey expect to be working for their current employer in the coming year. A further 18% expect to leave their employer within 12 months, and the remaining 39% are unsure whether they will stay or go.

Of those who expect to leave their employer in the next 12 months, only two thirds (36%) reported feeling dissatisfied overall with their job. So, although the remaining 64% aren’t dissatisfied, they have still told us that they don’t expect to be working for their employer in the coming year, which leads us to the question of why else employees might want to leave their employer.

Earlier we reported that many of our respondents were dissatisfied with the training, development, and career progression opportunities on offer to them in their current role (see Job Satisfaction, page 26). Coupled with the fact that 28% of employees look to leave a job due to lack of advancement prospects, it’s clear that providing a path to progression and space for professional development is crucial to retaining staff.

Among those who expect to leave their employer within the next year, 41% said that the main reason for leaving would be a lack of a salary increase, followed by a lack of career prospects (28%).

The benefits that can sway you

Offering great benefits is not only key to creating and maintaining employee loyalty, but it can also be a deal breaker in an employee’s decision to stay in a role or accept a new one. Therefore, it’s important to stay abreast of the latest benefit trends.

We asked our participants to name the work perks that would encourage them to accept a new role. The ability to work from home was the most sought-after work perk, followed by the monetary rewards of a salary bonus and 13th month pay.

No plans to upgradeWe asked the 35% of respondents who did not plan on upgrading their version of Dynamics what their reasons were. One-third (32%) of end users told us that they didn’t plan on upgrading because they had recently upgraded their version of Dynamics.

Almost three years after its release, we’re seeing a climb in take-up of Dynamics 365 as new customers adopt the solution, and existing Dynamics users begin to switch over to the new platform. 39% of our end user respondents are using Dynamics 365 and a further 17% expect to use it in the future.

Power PlatformMicrosoft’s Power Platform appears to be gaining traction with users; a little over a quarter (26%) of respondents are using PowerApps to build business apps, and 37% use Flow to integrate services and create custom workflows.

Dynamics AI and machine learning appsOne-quarter (24%) of end users that responded to the survey have plans to utilize Dynamics AI and machine learning apps like Sales Insights, Customer Insights, and Customer Service Insights, as well as forthcoming apps such as Virtual Agent for Customer Service, Market Insights, and Fraud Protection.

Diversity Diversity policy statements

At Nigel Frank International, we don’t shy away from approaching sensitive topics, and one such issue is that of diversity in the tech industry. We want to encourage an open and honest conversation about diversity in the hopes of making progress towards real change.

Sharing thoughts from Dynamics professionals puts a spotlight on this subject from the perspective of those working on the front line in the tech industry.

Almost half (45%) of respondents told us that their employer has a clear diversity statement. However, many professionals (32%) were simply not sure whether their employer has a diversity statement. This lack of awareness of diversity statements points to the need for a clear internal marketing strategy to support and promote it.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) in the UK suggests that an important aspect of good people management is promoting and supporting diversity in the workplace. Setting an inclusion strategy seeks to add value to an organization that goes beyond legal compliance, instead contributing to employee engagement and wellbeing.1

Equal pay

While 55% of respondents felt that their employer paid equal pay for equal work, regardless of gender, a further fifth (18%) did not know whether their employer was a fair employer in this regard.

Female respondents were also more likely (27% female to 4% male) to believe that men in the industry are paid more than women of equivalent skill and experience.

60% of male respondents felt that their employer paid equal pay for equal work, regardless of gender, compared to only 38% of female respondents.

In the ten years since we conducted the first Dynamics salary survey, the number of female respondents has grown 6% from 13% in 2009 to 19% in 2019.

43% of professionals agree that gender equality is a significant issue in the tech industry. The view that the industry is male-dominated is shared by a greater proportion of our female respondents (55%), than our male respondents (41%).

Is your employer inclusive?More than two thirds (65%) of the professionals surveyed think that the company they work for is an equal rights employer, although 17% believe that their employers could do more. When we look at the difference in views across the genders, 69% of male respondents believe that their employer is an equal rights employer compared to 49% of female respondents.

Sentiments on company diversityWhen asked to expand on what improvements their employer could make for them to be an equal rights employer, responses included a need for the correct policies to be in place, more diversity in management, to hire a more diverse workforce and to give employees equal pay.

To be more open-minded and accepting of hiring a diverse workforce, dealing with unconscious biases. Reduce favouritism and treat all employees fairly, with salaries, rewards and promotions matched to skill and experience regardless of gender or ethnicity. As well as to provide more exposure of the industry in school to encourage more women into the field.

Pay increase

Reasons for not negotiating a pay increase

Dynamics professionals were asked whether they had ever experienced a pay increase and whether they had ever negotiated a pay increase themselves. The results show that 84% of respondents have had a pay increase and that almost two thirds (61%) have negotiated a pay increase.

There was not much of a gender difference in those that have received a pay increase, with 84% of male respondents having experienced an increase compared to 79% of women. Similarly, 62% of male respondents have negotiated a pay increase compared to 58% of female respondents.

Survey respondents who had never negotiated a pay increase were asked to expand on their reasons. Responses can be categorized within the following themes:

• Receiving incremental salary increases

• Salary increases are based on performance reviews

• Being a new employee

• Pay negotiations are not conducted in the organization / it’s not company policy

• Salary should be based on performance
