Lesson Proper
1. Exploration or Getting Ready
The grade two pupils gathered 3,264 shells. They used 5g 3 shells for their project. How many shells were not used?
2. Presentation and Discussion
Step 1: Subtract the ones.
th h t o
3 2 6 4
5 9 3
1 =total
Step 2:Subtract the tens.9 cannot be subtracted
from 6. So we regroup 6 becomes 16.16-9 = 7
th t h o
3 2 6 4
5 9 3
7 1 = total
Step 3: Subtract the ones. 5 cannot be subtracted from 1. So we regroup 1 becomes 11.11-5 = 6
th t h o
3 2 6 4
5 9 3
6 7 1 = total
Step 4: Subtract the tens
th t h o
3 2 6 4
5 9 3
2 6 7 1 = total
Generalization
Subtract column-by-column, first the ones, then the tens, the hundreds and the thousands. Regroup if it is necessary.
