2014 NEW ZEALAND

There are two key social influences that are shaping our global trends - urbanisation and social media. We look at their influence on the four key bathroom design trends for 2014.

Urbanisation has changed the way we work.

The aging “baby boomer” population has pushed the living trends to smaller dwellings with an ethical element to design.

Social media and the phenomenon of “trust between strangers” created through referred reputations online, have changed our buying behaviour.

With these platforms of influence in mind; four key bathroom design trends have evolved;

GLOBAL TRENDS


Wood evokes a spontaneous sense of well-being.

In today’s fast-moving world, where

many people rarely get the opportunity

to truly experience nature, wood and

texture give us that spontaneous sense

of well-being. This natural substance

conveys warmth and an emotional

element into the home. Surrounded

by all the comforts of state-of-the-art

technology, this kind of authentic

experience with wood has the effect of

“grounding” us. It provides seamless

transition from the bathroom to other

living areas.

Haven’t we met before? Suddenly old is back in fashion.

It’s not only junk shops and auctioneers

who are benefiting from the wave of

nostalgia. Countless online traders

and interior designers are too. Those

items that were previously considered

“modern antiques” are now referred

to as “retro” or, somewhat more

sophisticated in the English-speaking

world, as “mid-century modern”. The

organic shapes, graphic patterns and

often delicately-built frames convey

something of that re discovered

lightness of the early post-war period

and the modern, abstract styles of art.

Masculine.

Men with a desire for work/life balance

are spending more and more time at

home. They are participating in the

decision making when it comes to a

homes interior design. What was once

considered the woman’s domain, now

sees men embracing the bathroom and

kitchen areas. The resulting design is

reflecting this masculine perspective.

A focus on simplicity and function are

driving this trend. The no-fuss ethos,

combining with natural, hard wearing

finishes and textures.

Ethical Eco.

Although “eco” has played a major

part in manufacturing and design

for some years now, the “ethical”

factor has joined this trend. From the

usual questions of origin, recyclable

packaging and energy used, to more

lifestyle and fiscal choices like - “do I

really need three showers in my home

for a functional household?” Cheap

manufacture is not the preferred

choice – consumers would rather have

less, but a product made of better

developed materials. Collaboration and

social media make this trend so much

more transparent.

Colour has no boundaries, it can be as subtle as adding splashes of colour through accessories, or as bold as possible using vibrant wall to wall paint.

Four colours that dominate the 2013/14 fashion and interior trends are;

Neutrals/ Natural Textures

Create this trend by combining stone

and timber with associated colours

such as trending neutrals like Dulux

Antique and Resene Villa White. Always

complement these neutrals with

earthier greens like Resene Hibernate

and Dulux Rodham.

Yellow.

Push into citrus tones for impact and

to create a fresh appeal. To achieve

this try Dulux Aotea Quay or Church

Road. Pastel yellows also dominate

the trends. Resene first light is a good

example of this.

Blue.

To invoke a calming, tranquil and

revitalising vision of blue try shades

such as Resene Escape and Breeze.

To achieve optimistic and bold hues try

Resene Captain Cook or Whale Tail.

Red/Orange Toned Pinks.

Splashes of orange toned pinks and

tangerine reds continue to influence

interior trends this year. Look out for

colours such as Resene Big Bang or

Rapture. Softer tones like Resene Adore

are perfect for a more sensual look.

on this year’s hottest bathroom design trends.

TAPWARETapware is seeing a return to function over fashion.

Functional products are to the fore, clients are tending toward the

established brands such as Kohler, Hansgrohe & Paffoni, which tend to

get very favourable referrals from friends and family. We are also seeing

classical styles being selected to counterbalance the emergence of more

colour and design flair with aspects such as bench-tops, tiles and basins.

yourself.

BATHSFreestanding tubs are the new must-have in the bathroom.

There’s great design flexibility in this area – anything

goes, like modern fixtures with vintage claw-foot tubs. If a

freestanding tub simply won’t work in your space, Kofoed

suggests a tiled or marble frame semi-recessed into the floor

to help free up visual space in the bathroom.

SHOWERSFor showers, eco-luxury is key in trend.

We are definitely witnessing a renewed focus on water efficiency, particularly as

the shower is one of the highest users of water in the household. However, recent

advances from a number of manufacturers have combined the best of both worlds.

Such as the stylish Kohler Rain Duet Shower Column with its water saving Katalyst

spray technology, or the innovative Methven Satin-Jet showerhead that increases

water coverage without increasing the water volume used. Decor-wise, marble in the

shower is in big demand - from slabs of marble to large tiles to mosaic patterns, it’s a

classic stone that comes back as a big trend year after year.

Bathroom design trends for 2014 revolve

around the bathroom as a sanctuary, with

lush elegant lighting, rich stone and tile-

work and luxurious deep freestanding tubs.

BASINS AND TOILET SUITESVanities and basins play a huge part in determining the overall style of your bathroom. While the all-in-one basin and vanity unit remains an ever popular and

extremely versatile option, the vessel basin is experiencing a strong

resurgence. It enables both design flexibility with your bench-top surface,

and twin bowl options for different bathroom users. Toilet Suites are rapidly

moving towards two main styles; back-to-wall suites tend to be chosen by

clients wanting a more classical appearance without the cleaning complexity

involved with close-coupled units. Wall-hung systems are the preferred option

for new builds due to their smaller footprint and ease of cleaning.

ACCESSORIES Accessories are trending and it’s all about functionality. As we have seen with tapware, simple shapes and clean lines are

being chosen to complement more bathroom flair. Consumers are

much more willing than in the past to use an interior designer to

better express their personal style in the bathroom; as a result more

conservative accessories such as towel rings, robe hooks and toilet

roll holders are being chosen by clients to provide balance to the

overall project. Another development is the addition of furniture pieces

such as feature chairs or side tables to add extra interest.

ECO PLUMBINGAn ethical approach to eco living is driving a genuine desire to design and build living spaces that are worth living in – for our future.

The importance of constructing sustainable buildings will grow in the future. The environmental, economic and social efficiency of buildings is dependent on companies that consistently implement sustainability concepts and actively develop them.

Handy tips to “eco” your bathroomCLEAR THE AIR Excess humidity causes mold, which

can spur allergies, asthma and other

breathing troubles. Cooking, cleaning

and showering can raise your homes

humidity. The bathroom is usually the

most humid room, so it’s important to

ventilate it.

Open your windows, install exhaust

vents or bring in a fan. By moving air

out of the bathroom you’ll remove the

moisture which mold needs to grow.

If there is no toxic mold, there is no

need to use bleach or other harmful

chemicals.

Global leaders in the plumbing industry

take eco visibility very seriously. In

private households 63% of our drinking

water is used in the bathroom, 27% of

which is used for toilet flushing alone.

In office and administrative buildings,

the average water consumption is

approximately 20 to 30 litres

per working day, per employee.

By developing product with the

sustainability concept ‘Save water,

protect resources’, every litre of water

saved reduces operating costs and also

sets a chain of positive environmental

processes in motion.

For many, the path to an eco-friendly

home starts in the bathroom. This is the

place where water flows freely, paper

products run wild and tile cleaners

contain toxins.

REDUCINGYOUR CARBONFOOTPRINTWhen it comes to eco-friendly options, the bathroom is

now as much a focus as other parts of the house.

“Last year we witnessed a real trend for energy saving products.

Such as the Heirloom ESP power saving towel warmers and the

innovative new Paffoni Red basin mixer which has a hot water

restrictor cartridge that limits non-essential hot water draw-down”.

However Hamish Kofoed says that under-floor heating is a

surprising eco-friendly option.

“Under-floor heating has seen a surge globally. We encourage

clients to use under-floor heating where possible. When your feet

are warm, the rest of your body feels warmer since heat rises,

reducing the need for more expensive heating options”.

CONSERVE WATERConserving water is perhaps the simplest, most cost-effective and eco-friendly way to make

a difference. For example by just turning off the water while you brush your teeth, you can

save you up to 910 litres of water a month. A five-minute shower can use as little as 14%

of the water used during a bath. Install a flow restrictor to shower heads, which can reduce

your water consumption by up to 50%. Choose tapware that have built in flow restrictors.

5 litres a minute is an ideal flow for the eco basin tap, and don’t forget to fix all your leaky

taps: A leak that drips once per second can rob you of 11,370 litres a year. Look for low-

flow toilets that use 4.5 litres per flush; older models use at least 9 or 12 litres per flush. If

you really want to go the extra green mile, get a composting toilet.

PICK GREEN PRODUCTSDon’t forget to invest in recycled toilet paper. You won’t be able to tell the difference

between recycled and virgin. Consider investing in a green shower curtain too. It may be

hard to imagine using anything but vinyl, since it’s almost the only material that doesn’t mold

up. However vinyl shower curtains can release more than 100 different toxic chemicals into

the air. Consider trading your toxic bleach cleaning products for vinegar also. Finally for the

serious greenies: This living moss bath mat will absorb water and dry your feet.

To understand what you pay for in a tap, it is useful to note that prices

can vary dramatically. Some can be priced over $1000 and some can

be as low as $45!

There is a certain amount of truth in “you get what you pay for”.

When you invest in a high quality piece of tapware you will enjoy a

product that is made of quality brass, has a high grade cartridge,

quality design and sound packaging. You will be provided with a clear

installation guide, often with additional fittings, warranty and support.

In most cases cheaper nondescript products come with cheaper

fittings, less brass and less back up. Often the plumber will take longer

to install the product and may need extra parts.

The tapware needs to reflect how grand or modest the home is.

The key is to not overcapitalise on tapware in a modest bathroom but

also not to completely undervalue your bathroom with tapware that is

too cheap or basic - ideally purchasing somewhere in the middle price

range is a wise investment, costing you less in the long run.

UNDERSTANDING THE PRESSUREShower tapware is the single most important decision when

selecting fittings for your bathroom. Why? Get this wrong and

every day you will not only feel disappointed in your decision but

you’ll start or end your day with frustration!

Shower tapware requires planning and a good understanding of

the household’s needs before selection can take place; for example

a family bathroom shower needs to have an element of water

efficiency for high use and also deliver a good shower in a short time

frame. Often a misty typed shower can give the appearance that

you will save more litres per minute BUT how long do you need to

be in the shower to actually rinse your hair out? Another example

could be that your water pressure is less than desired and the

pressure will reduce even more with a mains pressure mixer. This will

also cause a fluctuation in temperature - not something you want to

experience daily in your birthday suit.

PLANNING AND INSTALLATION - a good opportunity to future proof.

When you’re at the planning stage of the bathroom, consider all options for

the shower area and acquire the services of a reputable installer.

IMPORTANT - the shower needs to be water tight against the walls. All

shower options available in New Zealand will stand the test of time, providing

they are installed correctly and offer a NZ safety standard for the glass.

Planning is imperative before you purchase or start selecting materials.

It gets increasingly expensive to make changes, as each stage is completed.

TIP - put extra bracing in the walls if you think you may want to add a grab

rail, shelf or seat later on. A glass door or screen requires good bracing.

Stand in the space to mark out where you want the shower nozzle to come

from and a comfortable height for the mixer. You may want a spacious shower

but will you be warm with all that airflow around you?

Planning the outflow of water is also as important as the inflow of water. For

example, the shower might deliver 38 litres of water a minute because you

have two monsoon shower heads going at once. However your waste may

only be able to remove a portion of that per minute.

When renovating or building a new bathroom, it is

important to know how “water efficient” your new

products are going to be, and what the difference is

between “Mains” & “Low Water Pressure”.

Generally older homes in New Zealand were built to

accommodate a low-pressure water system. However

newer homes use mains water pressure that delivers an

equal water pressure throughout the house via closed-

vented cylinders. This enables the use of multiple water

outlets at the same time with no noticeable difference in

water pressure.

INSTALLATION

S Trap

An S Trap system is best installed when

constructing a new home. The waste is positioned

through the floor, therefore it is imperative that the

distance from the waste outlet to the wall is measured

accurately. This is called the ‘set out’ measurement.

P Trap

The P Trap is a through the wall system commonly

used when renovating a bathroom in an older style

home. The height from the floor to the centre of the

waste outlet is a standard height of 185mm however

this can vary. Refer to the product specifications to
