W elcome to the April issue of the Mickleover Directory! A date for your diary this month… 23rd

April: St George’s Day!

Is Spring going to Spring? Has it Sprung? After the long cold winter we’ve had, we deserve some better weather. Is it me, or has winter gone on longer this year than usual? We usually get a week or 2 when its really cold, below freezing, but this year it seems to have been zero degrees or below for weeks. Then we get a few days of sunshine, and we think, here comes Spring and the next day we’re back to minus temperatures, or in some cases… more snow! Come on Spring where are you?

The amount of local news and information I have been gathering has been growing steadily for the last few months. As you know, I’ve had to reduce the local notices to line adverts to get them all in. Despite doing that, this month I’ve had to leave a few out due to the demand. This is a great problem for me to have, as it means the magazine is being used - which is great! Thank you for your continued support, I’ll come up with a solution over the coming months. Have a great Easter….

Choose Wisely: Kittens should be active, inquisitive and interested in their surroundings. Their coat should look shiny and thick and they should have bright open eyes. Kittens often play with their litter mates to learn normal behaviours. Look for kittens that have been gently handled and are used to human contact. Provide Creature Comforts: Kittens like to feel safe and secure. Providing an area of safety with a bed placed in a quiet area away from household traffic can help reduce stress. Get a Carrier: A cat carrier provides a good and safe way to transport your cat outside the home as well as providing a safe bed to sleep in. Buying a decent quality carrier is always a good investment. Kitten Proof your home: Kittens will get everywhere and climb almost anything, so making sure your kitten can’t get itself into trouble is a necessity. Sometimes isolation in a kitten proof room can make your life easier as proofing your whole home can be a challenge. Particular injury risks are: open windows, open fireplaces, electrical cables and some household plants e.g.: Cyclamens, Dieffenbachia, Lilies and Poinsettia. Mistletoe is also poisonous. Gradual introduction: Small children should not handle kittens without adult supervision. If you have household pets then they can be gradually introduced, but allow the cat and fellow pet the opportunity to exit the room if needed. Accidents can happen: Everyone should have a litter tray in their household in a quiet place away from food areas. Cats are naturally clean so litter training often isn’t a huge issue. However, don’t worry if your kitten does toilet in another area. Sometimes accidents happen, give it time. Multiple litter trays can be a good aid in multi-cat households, reducing accidents and stress when toileting. Vet check: Here at Scarsdale Vets a primary kitten check is available free of charge to our clients. Doing this as soon

as possible after purchase can help avoid heartache later if your kitten has a clinical issue...although remember… most are fine. Prevention is better than cure: Our primary vaccinations start at 9 weeks old with a second vaccination at 12 weeks. The core vaccinations cover against cat flu, infectious enteritis (a viral cause) and feline infectious leukaemia (for outdoor cats). There are also several worm and flea prevention treatments that can be very easy to administer. Good nutrition: The easiest and most healthy way to provide good nutrition is to buy a premium quality kitten food. Wet and dried formulations are available according to personal and sometimes kitten preference. Whatever food you decide on, We would always recommend to do a gradual dietary change onto the diet that you want to feed over 5-7 days. This should eliminate the risk of stomach and bowel upsets. Cat milk is available and can be given in small quantities if desired, but non cat milk is not recommended. Kittens become increasingly lactose intolerant the older they become. Enjoy your Kitten: Cats make great companions. Enjoy!

W ell, here we are in Springtime at last and what a welcome relief . This time last year

was about when the drought broke and it didn’t stop raining, making it one of worst farming years for many a year. I hope it is only April showers we get now! We are finishing the last of the fencing of our newly restored hedges, so that the livestock can’t eat the tender young hedge plants. It is really interesting to see what small animals live in amongst the leaf litter at the bottom of the hedge. We come across Centipedes and Millipedes - the former have single pair of legs every segment, brownish and are carnivorous (catching their food with strong jaws which inject a paralysing poison), whereas Millipedes have two pairs of legs to each smooth, cylindrical segment and are vegetarian. The hedge also provides a wildlife corridor for animals and insects to travel along in relative safety, away from the beady eyes of predators that may be watching, as the grass and other plants will grow up, along with the hedge and give them some cover. Of course, its main objective is to keep livestock where they are put. Along our boundary hedges it provides a wider, more secure obstacle, keeping our livestock away from contact with our neighbours. This hasn’t prevented us from having a BTB reactor when we were tested last month. In one of our older, home bred cows, who was within a few months of giving birth. She had to be immediately moved into isolation (no nose to nose contact with any other bovine animal) and was given a stay of execution for four weeks, to give her time to calve and then have seven days with her calf before being killed (assuming she did calve in that time - as we use a live bull, there are no actual dates) and of course all the reams of paperwork to go with it had to be filled in, complete with visits from Animal Health. Following on from that we will

have to test all our cattle again, 60 days from the original test date, until we are completely clear. We are busy trying to get all our crops sown too. Because of last years atrocious weather conditions, much of our field work has been delayed, as has many others and, if we are to have enough feed and bedding for our stock next winter, we must get on with muck spreading, ploughing, harrowing and sowing, hoping to have it all done by the end of the month. Grass fields will need their share of TLC if they are to produce top notch silage this summer and, although we are not allowed to improve our pasture as it is under a conservation scheme, many farmers will be doing so, particularly Dairy farmers. They need lots of high quality feed and forage for their productive animals. The grass will be rolled too, so you’ll see nice wide stripes in the fields. Let us hope they get paid a living milk price in return We’ve been seeing Lapwings already and it was a particularly nice treat to see a flock of more than twenty Yellowhammers sunbathing in one of our thorn bushes. They are a type of finch and are on the RSPB ‘red’ list of endangered birds. Can’t wait for the Swallows to show summer is on the way. Meg, our young collie has had lots of work recently, moving sheep around and continues to improve. She stills sometimes forgets to listen, but is really quick when necessary, speeding round the flock and turning them when asked. As we get to the end of this lambing season, we are grateful we don’t seem to have suffered from Schmallenberg, unlike some! However, we shall have to see if it affects our spring calving cows.

On Saturday, 2nd March, a team from Swimtruck (www.swimtruck.com) took a patient to hospital, Madagascan style. This involved an 18 mile journey - and an improvised raft! The six-strong group set off from Alvaston Park at 8:30am in bright sunshine. Despite getting stuck in mud while launching, they quickly got to grips with controlling the raft and made steady progress down the river. After some hairy moments over the following eight miles - including running aground in mid-river - they reached the River Trent and got out at Sawley Marina at 2pm to exchange raft for stretcher. Ten miles of hard slog saw the team arrive at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham at 7pm, with a new respect for the Madagascans who do this sort of thing for real. Group founder David Scothern said, "Out in Madagascar, this is normal. You can't phone for an ambulance, so in an emergency you have to rely on

We want to design and send our Land Rover conversion to allow the Good News Hospital's staff to get out to the villages during the wet season, when their normal Land Rovers can't get around. Their preventative care will help to reduce the number of emergency cases - and believe me, ten miles with a stretcher is hard even in good weather!" 30 Mickleover Directory

C limbing out of the financial mess is proving harder than expected. Cuts to public spending and welfare cuts are

proving painful. Famous TINA (Margaret Thatcher’s “There Is No Alternative”) has been resurrected by David Cameron to explain the need to stick to the Coalition’s plan on the economy. Even at South Derbyshire District Council, while we have managed to retain for a further year, a zero increase in council tax to help our cash-strapped residents, we are facing a further round of internal council restructuring to find yet more savings, while protecting our frontline services to you. Oh, for that “magic money tree”, that thing of fairytales! Sadly, it does not exist and it certainly isn’t the abstract “government” which has only our money and, in fairness, has generally sought to protect people on lower incomes from the shock waves of austerity. Cuts are dreadful. They are done for reasons of necessity, not ideology. Promotion of economic growth is really the only longer-term solution to our debt problem and our recession. And it does feel long-term and a long time coming. However, there are some hopeful signs. Lower interest rates, higher exports to emerging economies like Brazil, Russia, India and China and promotion of large infrastructure projects are seen as key indicators. These large infrastructure projects, including HS2, railheads, new power stations (some of which we know are proposed for our area) are meeting with something of a planning log-jam. Most of these applications are determined now by the planning inspectorate and not by the local planning authority. We know that growth is in the air because there are not enough planning inspectors and staff to deal with the burgeoning number of nationally significant infrastructure projects. Up to 134 full-time staff must be provided to cope with the growing queue of projects. The Growth and Infrastructure Bill envisages handing over even more powers from the local authority to the inspectorate for the determination of planning applications from “poorly performing councils”, for large commercial and business projects and for renegotiating Section 106 agreements etc. One such recent and local planning application referred to the planning inspectorate, was for 2 wind turbines on land near Burnaston and Risborrow Close, Etwall. At the eleventh hour, the Appeal was withdrawn, probably because of an administrative error in the accompanying documentation. Whatever the reason, it is likely that a similar application will come along in due course. Other schemes now forging ahead, however, include the Lower River Dove Flood Alleviation Scheme which will give a 1 in 100 year flood protection to many hundreds of houses and many businesses in this area. Any inconvenience as a result of these engineering works is likely to be, in the main, additional HGV traffic as clay is imported for the build. Road sweepers will be continuously deployed

to pick up mud/debris from local roads. Joint discussions are on-going between STW and the Environment Agency to alleviate costs and maximise the scheme’s effectiveness, while the big problem of tying in the floodbank to the railway embankment near Hatton has now been resolved. The Flood Liaison Meeting to be held at the Council Offices on 21 March at 10am will update local parish councils on all of this and other flood and drainage schemes throughout the District. Plans for HS2 (phase2- the high speed train) have now been published, setting out the preferred route, stations and depot options. Detailed plans and profile maps are available to view on http://www.hs2.org.uk The route nearest to us would pass under East Midlands Airport in a 1.2 mile tunnel. The route would then cross the M1 at junction 24 before crossing the floodplain of the River Soar and passing through Long Eaton. An East Midlands Hub Station would be located between Derby and Nottingham on existing railway land at Toton close to the A52. It is proposed to connect here to conventional rail services to Derby, Leicester, Nottingham. 1500 jobs are anticipated at Toton and it is expected that three quarters of passengers from Derby would chose HS2 for a journey to London. Roxhill Developments, the railhead promoters for the large logistics site near the East Midlands Airport now sliced in two by this proposed HS2 route, are currently locked in talks with the Government to save their railhead application and the 7,000 jobs that it promises to deliver. Finally, a couple of future events for your diary. A Derbyshire project funded by the Arts Council is keen to hear how town and parish councils plan to get involved with the approaching centenary of the start of the First World War in 2014. Well dressing committees are being asked to consider designs to commemorate the war and the role of the community at this time. For more information contact Helen Bates on 0785 446 6183 or email [email protected]. Liberation Day, aimed at residents over 60 throughout the District, will be celebrating the rock and roll years of the 1950’s on Thursday, 23 May at the Green Bank Leisure Centre in Swadlincote. A free sandwich lunch is provided for the day, which starts at 10am and finishes at 3pm. Everyone is welcome! So put on your dancing shoes and I hope to see you there! Best Wishes,

Lisa Brown South Derbyshire District Councillor

DERBY NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY Evergreen Hall, Cornhill, Allestree

A Talk on Beetles Friday 12th April and 7-15 pm

At the April talk, presented by Derby Natural History Society, beetle expert, Chris Terrell-Nield, will give an

entertaining presentation on what is the largest group of living things in terms of numbers of species and which include some remarkably beautiful creatures. The title comes from a remark by famous biologist Prof. John

Haldane who, when asked by a clergyman what could be inferred of the intentions of Creator when we look at

all his works, replied with the remark ‘an inordinate fondness for beetles’, which is indeed the title of

Dr. Terrell Nield’s Talk. Non members are warmly welcome - admission £2 Derby Natural History Society provides a varied pro-

gramme of lectures, and outdoor expeditions, catering for people in the Derby area who are interested in wild-life and geology. We also produce an illustrated annul

journal which is full of interesting articles. Although there are ‘experts’ in the Society, the majority of members are people who simply enjoy natural history

and being out in the countryside. If you would like to become a member, please see our website at

www.dnhs.org,uk for contact details.

44 Mickleover Directory

I’ve got a bit of a problem at the moment and it’s not something I really want to talk about. The thing

is, I’m having trouble with my macaroons. They don’t smell funny or anything but they are definitely not what they should be. They look too inflated, are a bit misshapen and are curling up a bit at the edges. I blame Mary Berry for all of this and that blinking baking programme. She’s absolutely everywhere at the moment and it’s driving me nuts. She’s in “Hello”, on the telly, in all the magazines and on bookshelves in Smiths and I’m sick to death of it all quite frankly. Next, they’ll be digging up Mrs. Beeton and giving her a cookery programme as well. Except even she’s a bit too old really. You see, I’ve never really had good cupcakes either or cherry bakewells for that matter. My icing is too gooey and sometimes my cherries aren’t always as big as they should be. At school, my food technology teacher wasn’t much cop and forced me to make rock cakes so hard, they shattered your molars. She also put me off bread making for life. She wouldn’t let us use fresh yeast for baking bread in class and the smell of dried yeast was a bit acrid. It made your nostrils twitch and dilate with its pungent aroma whilst the smell of it rising was very unpleasant; without it though you never get hard shiny crusts apparently. I never ever did get shiny crusts. All I got was soggy bottoms. I was also useless at stuffing marrows, terrible at tripe and chips and I ended up torching the food technology department when I tried browning the topping on my crème brûlée with a blow torch in class. I singed my eyebrows off and ended up walking about looking surprised all the time. There are just too many programmes on the telly about cooking and I’m punch drunk with exhaustion trying to keep up. Heston Blumenthal is the hardest one to follow because he’s

obsessed with liquid nitrogen and ducks. The ducks are easy to get provided you run fast enough to catch them but the liquid nitrogen is tricky. You have to find a mortuary somewhere which uses cryonics to preserve bodies and then take your canister down to get it filled up but not at the weekend. There’s only Burke and Hare on duty at the weekend and they are really clumsy and messy with cadavers. At home, I’m really good at making a mess when I try any kind of cooking in the kitchen. I blitz the working surfaces using every single cooking utensil so that the kitchen looks like Beirut on a bad day. Then the kitchen vaporizes under a huge pall of self raising flour which looks like a toxic cloud of poisonous ash from a volcano somewhere. I won’t consider working with any recipe unless it lists a fire blanket in the ingredients or large amounts of wine so that I can hit the sauce if things go wrong. This limits me to coq au vin, which I’m awfully good at and boeuf bourguignon, heavy on the burgundy, light on the beef. I recently made black grape jelly but found myself short of a bit of muslin on the day. So I had to strain the grapes through one of my brassieres whilst fastening it to the legs of an upside down stool. The jelly eventually set after I laced it with pectin but my bra was never the same again. It was stained a murderous looking bloodstained red and when I wore it to the gym, people wanted to know if I’d bumped the family off. I’ve threatened it a few times, especially when they complain about my macaroons. They are always complaining about my culinary arts. I’ve told them if there’s any more nonsense, they’ll have to get their own tea from the freezer – at Sainsbury’s. Or, I shall behave like Marie Antoinette supposedly did when the peasants were starving and state quite simply: “Let them eat cake.”

by Jenny West A few weeks ago I met a young mother who was having difficulty finding something different to give to her family. Hopefully this recipe could solve her problem, without having to spend too much and not taking too long to make. This month the children will be on holiday for two weeks, so

why not get them to help make the meal?

Italian Meatballs with tomato sauce Meatballs: 500g/1lb minced meat (either beef, lamb, pork, or even turkey) ½ onion 2 cloves garlic Spices/Herbs (optional) Sauce: 1tbsp oil ½onion 2 cloves garlic Spices/Herbs (optional) 1 can tomatoes or carton passata Seasoning and ½tsp sugar

Instructions Put in a bowl all the ingredients for the meatballs and mix together. Form into even sized meatballs. Put the oil and onion into a large pan and cook until translucent. Add the garlic and cook for several minutes. Add spices or herbs that have been chosen to include. Add the tomatoes and cook for several minutes. Season with salt and pepper and add the sugar. Add the meatballs to the edge of the sauce in the pan and cook untouched for approximately 10 minutes. Turn carefully and cook for a further 10 minutes. Serve with pasta or rice.

FRIENDS OF ROYAL DERBY HOSPITAL REQUIRE MORE VOLUNTEERS

T he Friends always require new volunteers to help in the various retail outlets and with the ward

trolleys. Friends are all types of people, male and female, young and less young, who have a few hours to spare each week or fortnight. By joining the Friends you will help to provide a valuable service to patients, staff and visitors in the Royal Derby Hospital as well as raising funds to purchase new equipment for the Hospital. The Friends of Royal Derby Hospital is a registered charity. The two ward trolleys are taken round morning and afternoon, to different wards each time in order to cover all 41. They provide an opportunity to see our new Hospital working. The stock on the trolleys includes drinks, sweets & chocolates, crisps & biscuits and toiletries – a valuable service to patients who have had an urgent admission and forgotten to bring in everything they need, or those whose relatives cannot visit regularly.

The two tea-bars, situated in the Accident & Emergency and the Trauma & Orthopaedic out patients departments, provide a service to people (and

their helpers) waiting to see a consultant. In addition to the trolley’s items the tea-bars also provide sandwiches and hot drinks. The two shops are on the MacMillan and Maternity & Gynaecology corridors of the Hospital. They provide a wider range of goods than the tea-bars and the M & G shop also stocks baby clothes and soft toys. To keep all the services running, with the outlets based around a 2-hour shift pattern, approximately 30 volunteers a day are required. Some outlets are open at weekends. We are fortunate that the Hospital has provided us with tea bars and shops that are modern, bright, pleasant facilities. Why not come along, have a look, and then perhaps decide to join us. It is a good organisation to make new friends; some new members have also joined as pairs of friends, or husband & wife, or partners. If you would like more information and could spare a little of your time to help others please contact Alan Thompson, Membership Secretary, on Derby 514768.

On 9th May GEM Connection will be exactly 15 years old and we are all excited that we will be performing at the Post Mill Centre in South Normanton on Saturday 11th May from 7pm to showcase just how far we have come in our years together. The Gold Medal winning British Association of Barbershop Singer’s champions of 2012 - the Grand Central Chorus will also be joining us on our show along with another couple of special guests – details to follow shortly. Derby Kids Get Qualified

A group of young people from Derby are gaining extra qualifications to add to their CV whilst

having fun and meeting new friends. They are all members of 126 (City of Derby) Squadron Air Cadets. 126 (City of Derby) Squadron is located in Curzon Lane in Alvaston. Part of the Air Training Corps (ATC), the Squadron in Derby offers young people from 13 to 18 the opportunity to gain qualifications and build real life skills such as team work, leadership and motivation. They also take part in some fantastic and unique activities. Flying Officer Jackie Glover, Recruitment Officer for the Squadron says, “The thing that sets us apart from other organisations such as the Scouts and Army Cadets is that the Air Cadets have the opportunity to go flying and gliding.” From the age of 13, Air Cadets are able to fly in a Tutor aircraft or go gliding in a Vigilant glider with a qualified instructor. From the age of 16, they can apply for a flying or gliding scholarship. It is possible that some cadets will learn to fly solo before they can drive. 126 (City of Derby) Squadron is one of the largest Air Cadet units in the country with 120 cadets and as a result, can offer more activities than most units. The Squadron parades on a Monday and Thursday evening when young people can get involved in sports, marksmanship, radio, first aid, aircraft modelling and leadership training. At the weekend, the Squadron can be found camping or taking part in regional competitions. The Squadron has worked hard over recent years to ensure that all cadets leave the squadron with an enhanced CV. During the course of their ATC career, cadets can gain BTEC certificates in Public

Services, Aviation Studies and Music. They have the opportunity to gain a Sports Leader qualification or a Young Life Saver Plus certificate. They can also work towards their Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh award. Squadron Leader Ian Marshall, Officer Commanding 126 Squadron, encourages young people to join the ATC. “We can offer a lot more than most youth organisations. We run a lot of outdoor events including adventure training, visits to RAF stations, overseas camps and of course plenty of flying. However, what really sets us apart is the ability to offer cadets a real chance in life by enhancing their CV and teaching them to stand out from the crowd.” Anyone who is interested in joining the Squadron should contact Flying Officer Jackie Glover on 01332 753343 (Monday & Thursday evenings) or 07760 225684 (anytime). She says, “The best thing to do if you are interested in joining is to make an appointment to come and see us on a parade night. We can show you around and tell you a lot more about what we do.”

ROLLS-ROYCE RETIRED EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION

T he members of the Rolls-Royce Retired Employees Association enjoyed a days outing to

see the Lion King in London and were treated to an unexpected surprise when many of them happened to be in Covent Garden whilst the stars of Britains Got Talent were doing a promotion for the new show, some of them having a chance to be photographed with Stavros and Flatley. There was a disappointment to start the year when the Christmas Concert had to be cancelled through heavy snow but there is still a very full

programme for the rest of the year. These include visits to the Houses of Parliament in March & Blen-heim Palace in April, followed by York in May. The Association will be holding their AGM on the 9th April during their monthly get together. All members are welcome. Retired Rolls-Royce Employees can get more details by phoning Sheila Furniss on 01332 516744 or Pat Neal on 01162 106917 alternatively come and join us on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at Rolls-Royce Leisure on Moor Lane at 1pm.
