Schedule (Subject to Change)

COURSE OUTLINEThis three-week intensive summer school program will introduce students to the concept, principle and process of Digital Revolution. When you step onto the campus of Michigan State University you will step into an environment where innovation is at its core. The Global Enterprise Innovation Summer School program at Michigan State University offers nothing less.

Students will have the opportunity to conduct leading edge research and to explore the implications of the Digital Revolution. The Digital Revolution began at the turn of the 21st Century and is built on mobile Internet, the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, machine learning, and low-cost storage of information. It connects people with goods and services, biological systems and genetics. It creates virtual currencies and virtual economies outside governmental regulatory reach. The fusion of digital technologies crossing physical boundaries able to interact with biological domains makes this revolution fundamentally different from the agrarian and industrial revolutions.

Students will examine exciting case studies like Google, Airbnb, Uber, Alibaba, Amazon and how these companies have pioneered Digital Revolution in global businesses. Students will work in small teams to research, write-up, and present findings on the Digital Revolution.

INSTUCTORDr. Erika Butler is adjunct faculty in MSU Broad College of Business. She has a professional and educational background in organizational communication, IT and telecommunication, manufacturing, supply chain management, purchasing, and quality control.

Global Enterprise Innovation

July 17, 2018-August 8, 2018

COURSE OUTLINEIn today’s fast-paced modern society, especially in our urban neighborhoods, securing clean drinking water and safe, healthy and affordable quality food is an increasing concern among many global communities. This three-week intensive summer school program will introduce students to community-based approaches to enhancing food, energy and water safety. Students will learn about combining the efforts of non-profit organizations, small businesses, local government, utilities, and the public, to meet development goals in environmentally sustainable ways. The program will explore community-based place-making approaches that also facilitate meeting broader national and international goals of food, water, and energy security.

Students will have the opportunity to meet local farmers, food advocates, environmental activists, and government officials to examine and experience real food and water projects that are led by the community. Students are expected to complete a small group project to propose how they can apply the knowledge and experience they gained in the summer school to help their own local community in the areas of quality food and water. Various guided field trips will also help students learn how to apply theories to real life situations.

INSTUCTORMSU instructor Ms. Jessica DeForest has over 20 years of teching experience. She has taught courses on environmental and food policy issues through and academic engagement model. Her vast field experience and wide networks within the community will provide the best experience for students.

American Culture and Society

COURSE OUTLINEThis course will explore the connections between US history and contemporary culture, with a particular focus on race and immigration. We will address three key moments foundational to American culture: the turn of the last century, the mid-twentieth century, and the present moment. We will ask: What are some popular myths about the United States? How are these ideas created and circulated through mass culture and other media? How have these myths excluded some people from the idea of who is a true American? And how have some Americans challenged their exclusion?

At the turn of the century, we will consider Native American history and culture, as well as the histories of immigration at Ellis Island and Angel Island. In the mid-twentieth century, we will focus on civil rights, including photographic images of the African American civil rights movement, post-war Puerto Rican migration, and the shift from the idea of the “yellow peril” to the Asian American model minority. In the contemporary moment, we will explore issues of violent protest/riots, illegal/undocumented immigration, and American sports culture. We will use a broad range of sources to explore these topics, including photographs, cartoons, poems, songs, newspaper articles and broadcast news, documentary and narrative films. Our goal is not only to gain a familiarity with key debates around race, immigration, and culture in US history and contemporary society, but also to cultivate a critically reflective perspective on the ways that American society is represented both within the United States and globally.

INSTUCTORDr. Anna Pegler-Gordon is an Associate Professor at MSU James Madison College. She has taught courses in Asian American history, immigration policy, comparative race and ethnic relations, and U.S. racial and immigration history. Her first book, In Sight of America: Photography and the Development of U.S. Immigration Policy (University of California Press, 2009), won the Immigration and Ethnic History Society’s 2009 Theodore Saloutus prize. She is currently researching her second book, a study of Asian immigrants at Ellis Island.

Modern Packaging

COURSE OUTLINEAlthough we should not judge a book by its cover, we have to admit that in today’s competitive commercial world, appearance and presentation influence our decision on most of our purchases. Well-designed attractive packaging will boost sales. But packaging as a science goes beyond the look. It is about function, material, safety, environment and waste, culture and cost. Different products come with different packaging in terms of size, weight, shape, color, and material.

This is a three-week long intensive summer school program with a focus on modern packaging and the fundamentals of packaging science. Students will be working on packaging science and design related projects in small groups, as well as explore local packaging suppliers. The program offers full insight in all aspects of packaging, including function, materials, systems and processes, distribution and more. The program will be delivered by MSU Packaging School experienced faculty. Students will leave this course better prepared to implement virtual design and sustainability practices as it relates to packaging functions. The course will help students prepare for graduate level study and research in any packaging, food science or material science related disciplines.

INSTUCTORFaculty and staff in MSU School of Packaging will instruct the course, including Patrick McDavid, Dennis Young, and Cimberly Weir. The School of Packaging at Michigan State University is the leader in teaching, research and outreach focused on packaging containers, materials, and their functionality and improvement opportunities for over 65 years. According to Universities.com, Best Colleges 2017 ranks MSU’s School of Packaging as rated #1 in the U.S. and notes that MSU is the only school that offers a PhD in this program.

Smart Transportation Engineering

COURSE OUTLINEFully automated vehicles are no longer science fiction. Driverless platoon trucks are already moving goods on German Autobahns. Driverless buses are shuttling passengers on some college campuses. In the next a few years, we will be sharing our roads with more and more driverless cars.

The three-week long intensive summer school program is a multidisciplinary lab-based engineering research program with a focus on smart transportation technology and engineering. Students will be working on a project in small groups to practice theory as well as application. The program aims to foster creative thinking and enhance practical engineering and problem-solving skills through hands-on lab experiments in a supervised setting. It will help students prepare for graduate level study and research in any engineering disciplines including Transportation Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Artificial Intelligence.

Students will be introduced to an operational analysis of an on-campus highway intersection at MSU Mobility Studio. The project will include data collection of existing traffic and geometric conditions. Field recorded data will be displayed on a CADD drawing of the project site. Analysis of the intersection will be performed through computer traffic simulation. Alternative solutions will be evaluated, taking into consideration future plans and changes in future travel demand. Students will also take field trips to various research labs at MSU that showcase the top-notch technology, including the driverless car CANVAS project.

INSTUCTOR Mr. Anthony Ingle, PE, PTOE, is an expert in Transportation Engineering and Planning. As an experienced teaching specialist in Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, he teaches course such as Introduction to Transportation Engineering and Transportation Planning.
