MICHIGAN STATE MUZZLE LOADING ASSOCIATION NEWS LETTER
MAY/JUNE 2014
THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
As we wind down for the upcoming State Shoot I would like to remind you that we have many Match
and Aggregate sponsors to fill. It would be nice to see all the sponsorships filled. If you want to
sponsor any of the matches get a hold of Ron Fernwalt and he will take care of you.
Ron Fernwalt says that we are in line with last year as far as match and aggregate sponsors. As a
challenge to the other members of the association, Marty and I have committed to sponsoring one
more match for 2014. So, let’s step up and do the right thing for the association. (This paragraph is
borrowed from the last newsletter, but I believe it deserves repeating.)
Ted Thelen tells me that raffle ticket sales are going well for the beautiful rifle built by Joe Valentin,
as well as the shooting box built by John beard.
I am just thinking out loud, but what are your thoughts on putting on a match for in line black
powder front stuffers? I am thinking of any bullet or any sight match (scopes, peep sights, or open
sights) as long as it loads from the front and has a percussion cap or 209 primer for ignition. A four
match aggregate consisting of a 25 yard off hand match, a 50 yard off hand match, a 100 yard off
hand match and finally a 100 yard any position match. Any position to include offhand, bench, x-
stick, bi-pod, chunk or just prone. Sounds kind of interesting, doesn’t it? We’ll talk more about it at
the State meeting.
I am pleased to announce that for 2015 Lyle McGregor has volunteered to build the rifle for the State
Association. It is still in the planning stage, but I am told that it will be a small bore flint lock. That is
what the State Association is made of…a fine group of ladies and gentlemen volunteering their
talents for efforts for the good of the Association. THANKS LYLE………….
In closing, I would like to wish everyone the best for the Memorial Day holiday. Also, I hope I see all
at the State Shoot in July.

JUNE SHOOT 2014
By now, many of you have dates on your calendars for our big event. The shoot schedule was sent out with the last newsletter. For returning shooters and their families, it’s a great get-away from every day routine. Along with events and matches, many have enjoyed the pristine Manistee beaches and/or woodland trails. We’re hoping new shooters consider visiting our range this year so we can keep the “fun & games” going. 55th Annual Rendezvous June 28 & 29, 2014 Military Rifle Match
BRIDGE PORT SHOOT
On a balmy 11 degree day we had 25 hardy souls come out to the numb skull shoot at
Bridgeport. The crowd was cheerful and ready to have fun. They did. Some of the most popular
targets were the pixie stix, lasagna noodles, and the ice cream cups filled with oatmeal. Mike Hyde
and his sons came down from West Branch to join us. Mike took first in percussion. Len Graves led
the way for the flintlock shooters. Dennis Shriner took top honors in trade gun.
We want to thank Mike Sullivan for the big pot full of bean soup. It was hot and delicious. Everyone
had a great time and we had fun putting it on. Our next shoot will be April 13th. Diane is working on
some new target ideas and we look forward to sharing them with you.
SURVIVAL FOR MUZZLE LOADING CLUBS
There are many reasons for the decline in muzzle loading. The bad economy is a very big factor in
the decline. Gas prices have hit us hard, especially for those that have trailers to haul around.
Muzzle loading was always considered an inexpensive form of shooting. Not anymore. The cost of
powder and lead keeps going higher and higher. The cost of good quality firearms has gone
through the roof.
Our biggest enemy is our age. We are not as young as we used to beand it takes a lot more energy
to keep us going. Let’s face it, it’s not as much fun as it used to be for many of us; but we keep on
going.
Another issue is that we cannot get younger people interested in muzzle loading; we need them to
keep it going.
For those of us that come from small clubs, it is becoming a big problem. It takes money to
operate a club and as our membership declines so do our activities, and our income.
The Washtenaw Sportsman Club has 1000 members, but we have less than a dozen active
muzzleloaders. Again age comes in to play, one of our big problems is our older members do not
like shooting in cold winter months, but as soon as it warms up they all head up to their homes in
the north. We had to cancel many of our shoots last year because lack of participation. It’s hard
to have a match if only two or three people show up.

FROM THE EDITOR
Bob Elka wrote a real nice article which is explaining what is happening to our clubs which we need
to work on getting new people to get involved. All clubs are struggling today to make a positive
bottom line.
One of the ways to help your club out is to come up with new ideas etc. and the least expensive idea
is to advertise in the state newsletter which cost you or your club nothing. I have been getting very
few flyers to put in the state newsletter. Most of the flyers are coming from one or two different
clubs. All you need to do is e-mail them to the editor [email protected]. Send them in a pdf file or
Microsoft word document and then I can copy and paste them in the newsletter.
The other things which we are looking for are articles about your club, activities and hunting and
fishing stories and experiences you have had.
Remember this is not my newsletter, it is yours and the more information we can get, the better the
newsletter will be.
Have a great day and good shooting.
