Immersion Learning (2004)• Planned action to address lack of real

implementation of Self-Determination in Michigan

• Developed network to support consumers & families in the pursuit of Self-Determination

WHY• Individuals with disabilities &

their families do not have good information on how to go about doing Self-Determination.

• Consumers need to lead the movement for building demand for Self-Determination.

• Systems need to partner with others to build a more “person friendly” system of services and supports.

• Local advocates, allies and service providers are having difficulties building demand for Self-Determination in their local communities.

WHY• Lack of understanding by

consumers and families members regarding the tools of Self-Determination - individualized budget - fiscal intermediary - independent support coordination
