New this year is the Paddle for a Cure race in Hastings, MI to support the battle against Huntington’s Dis-

ease and has something for the whole family! The General Clinton Canoe Regatta happens over Memorial

Day weekend, and is shaping up to be a great event. The best racers in North America will be there, as well

as beginners looking to complete their first “marathon” event. Early June takes us to the Black River Race,

which always feels like a party after the General Clinton… especially if you hit up the party barge for refresh-

ments after the C1 race. A perennial family favorite, Newaygo Power Paddle boasts a separate start for

women in the C1 race, a mentor race, and a C2 race on the beautiful Muskegon River. Late June brings us

the Huron River Canoe Challenge in Ann Arbor– one of the largest C1 races on the circuit and a highly com-

petitive mentor race. Returning in 2017 is C1 prize raffle– each race gives you another chance to

win! This year the MCRA is promoting youth in the sport, with a series of junior and mentor races,

plus a 19 & under bonus in the C-1 races. Not to leave the older paddlers out, we are continuing

to promote an age group bonus in races with more than 4 C-1 paddlers over 70. The MCRA is also

working to promote women in canoe racing with a C-2 mixed racing purse at Ann Arbor, a wom-

en’s weekend C-2 & C-1 races at Mio. See you on the water! —Rebecca Davis
