Reflections by the Governor Conventions Begin…Circle K, Key Club with reminders of goals set for the year

David Babbage2012-13 GovernorMichigan [email protected]

I cannot believe that I am going on my seventh month as Michigan District Governor. I am having a great time and lots of fun.

I recently was at the Circle K, 58th Annual Michigan District convention. What a great time and what great Leadership. Circle K Governor Megan Pratt has done a stellar job during her term. Her officers and clubs truly know the meaning of service. I hope the best for the retiring officers and to the newly elected board as well as Michigan District Circle K Governor Michael Manning. Northwood CKI was a fabulous host, thank you.

I also went to the Annual Michigan District Key Club Conven-tion (DCON 2013). What a great convention. The Michigan District Key Club retiring officers and Governor Deanna Galer truly had Superpowers. Their convention was marvelous. I also wish the retiring board best wishes for the future. I know Deanna and the board will pass on their Superpowers to the new board and new Key Club Governor Audrey Drotos.

The District Spring Divisionals are now over. It was great to see all the service projects and sponsorships each Kiwanis club has done. Terrific Job Michigan District!

On a sad note Former Michigan District Governor Paul Tomshany recently passed away. Paul was president of the Dexter club in 1972-73, Distinguished Lt. Governor in 1974-75, Distinguished Governor for 1981-82, International Trustee from 1991-94 and International Vice-President for 1994-95.

His Governor’s theme was “Pride, Enthusiasm, Teamwork”. As governor, Paul stressed Flowers for the living. He stated that we all share regrets for others we may have not taken time to recognize or honor. How about the Kiwanian who missed the

last meeting or two? Did you stop by or call him to find out why?” By his Flowers for the Living theme he stated don’t forget your current members and be sure to hon-or them and check up on them. He was a GREAT Kiwanian. He will be missed.

Like me, he also felt it impor-tant to thank members for their ser-vice. Speaking of Service. Here is a recap our goals for 2012-2013...................................................w

Membership Growth • Build a minimum of 6 new clubs 2012-

2013• Strive for retention of 95% of all current

members• Each club should strive to increase

membership by 2 members with one new member half the age of the club’s oldest member.

Service • Each club will strive to implement one

new service project. • Each club will strive to do three service

projects for children. • Each club will strive to do one hands-

on project at a club meeting • Each club will sponsor one Student to

attend the Key Leader program

Service Leadership Programs• Strive to Increase Service Leadership

programs by chartrering Five new Ak-tion Clubs,

• Chartering Three new Circle K Clubs, Chartering Five new Builders Clubs,

• Chartering Five new Key Clubs, Char-tering Five new K-Kids Clubs,

• Sponsoring Ten new Terrific Kids Pro-grams, and Sponsoring Five New Bug Programs

EDUCATION • Continue Past Governors Strategic Plan

(3 & 5 year plan) 2011-2013 • Conduct an orientation for all new

members inducted during 2012-2013.• Add three new certified trainers to the

Leadership Development team.• Every 2012-2013 new president and

secretary will participate in Club Leadership.

• Every Club will try to present an online training at their Kiwanis meeting

CONVENTION ATTENDANCE• A minimum of 300 Kiwanians will

register for the Michigan Convention (Strive to send a New Officer & One Club Member that has not ever attended before).

• A minimum of 250 Kiwanians will register for the Kiwanis International Convention. Strive to send a New Of-ficer & One Club Member that has not ever attended before.

Goals for 2012-2013:

Have you Shared the News recently?

The Michigan District offers a great opportunity to showcase the successes of your Club, your members and your community.

Your successes when published reward your members for service and provide ideas to other Kiwanis clubs. The following guidelines will help get your information published:

ArticlesProvide the basic information that includes your

club name, division, what was done, who benefited, when it was accomplished, and how it was accom-plished.

Narrative can be attached to an email in Word, or edited and typed in the body of your email.

Pictures:Send any pictures as attachments (not included

in the body of a document) in highest resolution possible. Pictures downloaded from the web are generally not acceptable.

Identify persons in pictures, and try and use action pictures rather than poses of acceptances, podium speakers, and groups in rows. Usually only one or two pictures will be used, so choose wisely.

Submit:Send your email

and attachments to: [email protected], Subject Line: Builder

Deadlines for our six issues: July 7; Sept. 7; Nov. 7.

In this issue I will take a break from my usual obser-vations and updates and focus on the ONE MOST IMPORTANT EVENT that club officers should be considering as a must do to set the tone and goals for the club beginning October 1, 2013.

First, the why I consider this event the most impor-tant. I have witnessed the successes and failures of clubs for over 8 years, and the common denominator of both results is leadership participation in Club Lead-ership Education (CLE). I can also speak as having served as a Club President in three different size clubs. If you agree that success of almost any kind starts with measurable goals, then CLE is the first stop in that effort. (Registration form on page 10)

Anyone who steps up to the commitment to serve a club as President or Secretary, also accepts the fact that their personal commitment to Kiwanis will be more than 2 hours a week. CLE is designed to present information to each of these particular officers that will make the job much easier. In that regard, then there are two areas that make or break success: communication and a budget. Someone said that a goal without a plan is just a dream. Information will be provided to address communications, awards, calen-dars, legal issues (yes there are some), recognition and your first meeting with the incoming Lt. Governor (your first Div. Council meeting).

Donating your valuable time to this half day session in July will be an investment that will save significantly more time than that as you cruise through your year as the leader of the best group of community volun-teers anywhere.

Make the effort…..you owe it to your club, its’ history, and its’ future.

5 June/July 2013 Issue

This is the time of year that next year’s leadership starts to prepare for their respective offices.

Club election reports should have already been submit-ted. Club presidents and secretaries should be finalizing their schedule so that they can attend one of the three Club Lead-ership Education (CLE) sessions in July. These sessions are NOT just for first time presidents (or secretaries). The pre-sentations have changed, and some new information will be shared.

Another KEY reason for attending, is that this will be the first opportunity to meet your new Division Lt. Governor, have your first Division Council Meeting, and strategize your up-coming year. If you will be an officer next year, PLEASE make every effort to attend one of these sessions!

Next year’s Lt. Governors just completed their training. Their sessions covered suggested methods of retaining, and growing clubs and members. Also topics relative to assisting clubs, and leadership methods were also discussed.

Your Lt. Governor has a tough job. It is a volunteer position, and he (or she) is assuming this role because they want to make a difference. They are YOUR Divisional representative on the Michigan District Board of Directors. They are your voice. Let them know your needs. Make suggestions.

They are also the District’s spokesperson. They are asked to promote specific District pro-grams (IE Key Leader, member-ship, etc.). Seek them out. Use them as a source for improving your club.

Unfortunately, the Michigan District is only able to offer mini-mal financial assistance to cover expenses for each Lt. Governor. I would ask that your club consider some sort of financial help. Some clubs help with a $50 donation, others help with a contribution of $2 or $3 per member. Any amount would be appreciated as your Lt. Governor assumes their office in October.

Thank you for your service!

Let’s help develop Leaders!

In Memory of Past District Governor, Paul Tomshany

The District is saddened with the news of the death of Paul Tomshany. His history with Kiwanis and the District is remarkable.

Paul joined Kiwanis in 1966 as a member of the Kiwanis Club of Dexter and during the years that followed, he moved through the club ranks serving on most all committees and became President in 1972-73. Paul moved into District activities as a Lt. Governor-Elect in 1973-74 and was a Distinguished Lt. Governor in 1974-75. His success led him to the position of Governor, leading the Michigan District during the 1981-82 year. Paul was named Distinguished for his efforts that year. Beginning about 1985, Paul became active in International activities rising to International Trustee in 1991 serving on the International board from 1991 – 1994. He was elected International Vice President for 1994-1995. Paul was a Distinguished Kiwanian of the Kiwanis of Michigan Foundation and a life member of both Kiwanis International the Michigan District.

Paul was always a very active member in the Kiwanis Club of Dexter, always volunteering to help on the many community projects. He worked tirelessly along with Dave Hosmer and Joe Scheuring on the Dexter Daze raffle. When the Dexter Club disbanded in 2012 Paul joined the Chelsea Kiwanis Club.

“Paul never missed a meeting or event and we had so much fun working our annual Dexter Daze event together (pic above) - he will be so missed! When I became President of our club he gave me a mini gavel, a mini bell and of course a small prayer book - that was Paul. One of the most generous, kind hearted men I’ve even know.n. “ Julanne Williams

Multi-Divisional Coordinators

The Michigan district continues to make progress with this world-wide project, The Eliminate Project. We in the district have now raised donations and pledges to over $500,000 saving more than 277,778 lives by protecting mothers and their babies from maternal/neonatal tetanus. Our International totals are doing extremely well with dona-tions and pledges of $28 million saving 15,555,556 lives. The goal for International is to raise $110 million with donations and pledges by 2015 the 100th anniversary of Kiwanis. Many of us remember the IDD project (Kiwanis’s first International project) which in the first three years raised only $1 million. The goal for the IDD project was $75 million and the final total was over $100 million.

Model Clubs seems to be a focus point whenever we talk of the Eliminate project because 40 – 50 percent of funds raised will be through this commitment. This year is the Kiwanis Year of Participation, and the perfect time to commit to becoming a Model Club. As we have raised funds and seen our accomplishments over the past two years, now is that time to pledge what your club looks to accomplish over a five year commitment. With a commitment this year your club will have until 2018 to fulfill that commitment. Mothers and babies are at risk. One baby dies every nine minutes from the painful death of maternal and neonatal tetanus. This is our chance to end this outrage. This is your way to help either individually and/or as a club by making this commitment. Papua New Guinea is planning a third round of supplemental immuniza-tion activities this month (June) which will reach 1.7 million women by the time we celebrate our International Convention in Vancouver. Let’s all rally together to ensure no family in Papua New Guinea or anywhere else suffers the pain and agony of mater-nal and neonatal tetanus.

The following are excerpts from 2012–13 Thomas “Tom” DeJulio, President of Ki-wanis International:

It gives me great pleasure to tell you that Kiwanis International has raised $28 mil-lion for its Global Campaign for Children. We are so proud of our service leadership clubs that have enthusiastically displayed their desire to serve the global society in which they will live. To date, they have raised close to $1.5 million. But we cannot rest on our laurels. With your continued help, when we meet in Vancouver, we will raise another $12 million that will continue to rid the world of maternal and neonatal tetanus and respond to the sense of urgency this disease creates. On behalf of a very grateful Kiwanis International board, I want to thank all Kiwanians for continuing to make this the Year of Participation.

The collective and collaborative efforts of the Kiwanis family is truly achieving its objective to save or protect millions of lives in the most under served and impoverished areas on this earth. We are heeding the call to serve “the poorest of the poor” and the most vulnerable in our society, which is embedded in the first Object of Kiwanis.

Sincerely, Thomas ”Tom” DeJulio

Club coordinators are still needed, and if your club doesn’t have a coordinator for the Eliminate project please have someone from your club contact a Multi or Division coordinator as listed at right. Club coordinator instructions are available for anyone interested.

The George Brown Key Leader Training program was presented May 3, 4 & 5 to approxi-mately ninety attendees at Camp FaHoLo in Grass Lake, MI. It turned out to be a great weekend.

Ms. Melinda English did an outstanding job as lead facilitator making her presentation interesting and relevant to today’s youth.

Thank you to the U. S. Army who provided two combat veterans who shared real life expe-riences and the importance of leadership.

Miss Michigan, Angela Venditti from Shelby Twp., created a lot of excitement when she spoke with the students about leadership, service and giving back to the community, her experience with the Miss America Pageant and her community service projects around Michigan.

Students enjoyed Team Building exercises on various outdoor obstacles the camp offers and many fears were faced and were overcome.

Early feedback indicates many students are demonstrating new confidence and concern for others following their weekend.

We want to give a big Thank You to the clubs who sponsored students and a special Thank You to the Adult Leaders who gave their time and energy in giving the students a great camp experience.

Tom Wilson, Key Leader District Chair

Groundbreaking Ceremony at Mary Free Bed Hospital

On April 9th, Mary Free Bed Hospital held a groundbreaking ceremony for a six-floor expansion that will add 190,000 square feet of patient care space to the 115,000-square-foot hospital at 235 Wealthy St. SE. After the new building is completed, the existing space will be renovated as part of the $54 million project. Mary Free Bed is one of the fasting growing hospitals in the United States as demonstrated by a 50% growth with inpatient and outpatient admissions over the last two years. With the support of Michigan District clubs, your Kiwanis of Michigan Foundation has been actively supporting the child and family life department for over 60 years.

Jackie Bultman of Mary Free Bed Hospital and

Mark Ott, Vice President of the Kiwanis of Michigan

Foundation make ceremonial first digs at

groundbreaking ceremony. A special note should

be made of the shovel handles.

McLaren Northern MichiganPetoskey, Michigan

Greetings from the Herman H. Meyer ProjectMost of you know our hospital has been going through some very big changes as are many hospitals throughout

the country. Whenever I speak to people in the medical field from out of town they comment on how fortunate we are to have a Child Life presence here at our facility! I always tell them it is because of our very generous donors, the Kiwanis of Michigan Foundation.

My duties are ever changing as the needs of children in health care are many and complex. I sit on several committees to bring the pediatric perspective to Emergency Management, Quality and Safety and Diabetes in children. All of these initiatives are very different when applied to children. I am now also heading up a process to educate children and families about their up coming surgical experience. We have always offered tours but families are so busy that one more appointment is just too much sometimes. So I spend a lot of time on the phone with parents and the pediatric patient. So far the feed back has been very positive.

The time I spend with the children on the unit is still the most remarkable! The patients themselves are where I learn the most about how children and families interact, cope and respond to their health care experience. The key I see time after time is that if the child is able to do and respond to toys, games, crafts, movies or video games as they do at home it lowers the stress of the entire family. So…..because of Kiwanis we have all the toys, games, dolls, crafts and video games a child needs to augment what the doctors and nurses do. Thank you so much for the opportunity to continue to do this in the uncertain time for health care. The children you touch with your continued generous support are greatly impacted.

Grosse Ile 2013 One Day Project…

In 2013, the Kiwanis Club of Grosse Ile decided to select getting the memorial garden ready for the spring planting blitz with the help of Kiwanians, Key Club members, and other willing volunteers as the Kiwanis One Day Project. The time for the organized effort was scheduled from 9:00 a.m. until noon on April 6. As luck would have it the weather conditions were unfriendly. The temperature was in the 30˚ F range and the wind was blowing in across the open airport with gusto. But still nine volunteers, dressed for the adverse conditions, completed the tasks scheduled. Included was scraping and sanding the three benches generating a refinished appearance. The whole garden site was cleared of plant stubble and weeds and readied for the spring planting which will take place in mid-May. Many of the flowering perennials are already showing the signs of greening out and meriting the beauty of gorgeous flowers which has gained notoriety for Kiwanis commitment and thanks from the men and women who have sacrificed so much for our country.

Kiwanis Club of Saginaw…The Kiwanis Club of Saginaw offered its second annual Anniversary Cash Bash at the Saginaw Country Club on April 18, 2013. It was the occasion of the club’s 96th anniversary. Approximately 35 members and guests attended to partake in liquid refreshments and hors d’oeuvres and to witness the drawings that resulted in 5 of the 100 $100 ticket holders agreeing to split the $5,000 grand prize. Door prize and on-the-spot 50/50 ticket holders also collected their winnings. The club netted almost $4000 for the event.

Woodhaven…As a special surprise at a recent

Kiwanis Club of Woodhaven meeting, Robin Watson-Azzopardi was presented a Hixson. Very specifically, the Hixson Fellowship was awarded to Robin for beginning the concept for the Essay Contest when she served as our Youth Citizenship Chairperson. Robin Watson served in many different leadership roles in our Club. From Youth Services Chairperson to Club President, Robin stepped up and led the Club. As Club President, she made the difficult decisions necessary to lead our Club. She brought many new ideas to our Club, several she found reading the Kiwanis International magazine. She would find an idea, present it to the Club, and then put it into practice. Robin was honored by the Woodhaven Kiwanis Club as their Kiwanis of the Year for the 2003-04 year. She served as President of the Kiwanis Club of Woodhaven during 2005-06 Kiwanis year.

Fourth Grade Essay Contest…Each spring, the Kiwanis Club of

Woodhaven partners with fourth grade teachers across the Woodhaven-Brownstown School District to sponsor a persuasive essay contest.

Each year’s topic is If “I had $100.00 to donate to a charity, I would choose _____ because..... “ Immediate Past President ,Curt Siegwald said, “Our contest has two goals. First, to encourage students to build their persuasive writing skills. And secondly, to encourage students to have a better understanding of charitable giving within our community.” Once the winners are chosen, the student, the student’s family, principal and teachers are invited to our Kiwanis meeting. Additionally, a representative from the student’s charity is invited to our meeting that evening. After dinner, each student reads their essay and then presented a check for $100.00 from the Kiwanis Club of Woodhaven to a representative from their charity.

Secretary-Treasurer Paul Elsey makes the presentation as Immediate Past President Curt Siegwald put Robin Watson-Azzopardi’s medallion around her neck.
