• Michelin is a French tire manufacturer based in Clermont-Ferrand in the Auvergne région of France. It is one of the two largest tire manufacturers in the world along with Bridgestone.

MANUFACTURING IN SOUTH INDIA

• In 2009, Michelin Group and Tamil Nadu government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Michelin’s tyre manufacturing plant, 50 km north of Chennai at SIPCOT Thervoy Kandigai Industrial Park. This 290 acres facility is currently focussed on manufacturing a range of Radial Truck/Bus tyres.

The plant is currently operational.

• In July 2013, the Chennai plant produced its first MICHELIN radial truck tire prototype with subsequent production commencing from Q1 of 2014. Over 700 people helped bring the plant on stream, of which 350 Indian employees were trained in 12 countries. 4,500 tonnes of machinery requiring 280,000 meters of cable were installed to operationalize the facility.

• Michelin has adopted and implemented the group’s “Green Factory” concept at the Chennai plant. Through this initiative, over 6000 saplings have been planted at the site.

• Michelin's numerous inventions include the removable tire, the pneurail (a tire for trains made to run on rails) and the radial tire technology now used in modern "green tires" that reduce fuel consumption.
