Trake is a social housing project for 4600 students and young professionals located in Belgrade. By looking at a precarious subject, the project responds to the present condition of an entire generation, the so-called "war babies". Mindful of the failure of the Yugoslavia Dream they find themselves stuck, today, in an economic and social condition of both proximity and isolation towards Europe. Trake is an attempt to formulate a new architectural language against the traditional housing typology of the family apartment. Located in the heart of the city of Belgrade, on the Sava riverbank , the project addresses the scale of room, block and street and has to be understood as both an urban strategy as well as an interior architecture experiment.

1

Page 7: Michela Bonomo- Portfolio

The organisation of the blocks, at a larger scale, follows an apparent rigid structure deducted from the subdivision of the site in strips of equal width of 32m. By considering the urban project, as both constituted of built and un-built the urban strategy is the result of the interrelation of layers or layout of plantations, sport facilities, path and routes, trees and greenery. The coexistence of these different systems throughout the site and scans the activities taking place in the different strips. The construction of the built environment follows a logic of phases, where the completion generates a regular rhythm between landscape and architecture.

2

Page 8: Michela Bonomo- Portfolio

The built strips are not continuous, but rather stop in proximity to the existing buildings. Therefore the blocks follow a modular logic, where the maximum length is related to the density : a maximum of 400 people per building, where the maximum module dimensions are 32 x 100m.The strips are not autonomous objects, but rather complementary realities broken by underground passageways and larger paths, allowing for a continuous procession. In the equal spacing of the soft and the rigid strips happens the dialogue between a moment of social engagement and another one of intellectual contemplation.

4

Page 11: Michela Bonomo- Portfolio

Different commercial activities take place at the edges of the strips facing the gardens, whereas public facilities (laundrette, bicycle storages) theatres gyms and auditorium occupy the central space of the ground floor. Trake is an urban strategy prototype , able to adapt to any type of sites along the river. No individual rooms face the quay but rather indoor shared areas and open landscapes. The street acquires a different connotation and it is replaced by the river: a contemporary urban connection between Belgrade and other urban conditions.

This dualism perpetuates at the level of the block. The walls, resembling theatrical wings, gradually become thinner and thinner from the first to the last floors. The extension of a room experienced at the lower levels, is restricted at the upper floors, where only single’s cells dominate the environment. The upper floorscells could potentially be rented only as workspaces. In its entirety, the block embodies the contrast between formal and informal, by providing multiple spatial configuration in the inside, and a generic and severe façade to the outside. The procession of the interior, from a more public space to a private oneboth in plan and section, continues outside, where the boundaries between built and unbuilt are hard to trace.

Page 18: Michela Bonomo- Portfolio

The design of the room is deducted from a new interpretation of the table. Liberated by its role as the multipurpose point for the traditional Serbian family, the table becomes the place for the emancipation and resistance of the "self".The room as the study of 1.8 m x 2.7 m becomes the central point from which the rest of the apartment is deducted and hierarchically organised. The architecture of the room follows a new logic, where series of thick walls equally distanced (2.6m) define the space , following a gradient from the private study to a the public shared space. The architecture eliminates the partition wall as the actor of social division, and rather allows furnitures and flexible panels to determine the size of a room. Other than the table, which is fixed and cast in situ as the rest of the load bearing walls, the furniture are modular pieces. They can serve different uses depending on their position in between the walls. The minimum dimension of a room for a single person is 24 meter square, but the high flexibility permits the expansion of the single cell into a larger room for 2 to 3 people (expanding up to 80 meter square).

In doing so, Trakes challenges the traditional approach to architecture by promoting a space which asks for a continuous compromise between being alone and being together.

Band Aid

Sustainability is not synonymous with ecology. There are no virgin ecosystems, and there are no unoccupied territories. Sustainability is a question of socioeconomics, geopolitics and cultural practice – it is a struggle to reconcile capitalist expansion with environmental exploitation.

There is an urgency to imagine architecture can address, in pragmatic ways, the gross social inequality, spatial injustice and unbalanced power relations that now increasingly typify the new global order. We understood the brief as a question of social sustainability, and asked: what is really at stake?

Norway is marked by two problematic social conditions: an extremely high rate of homelessness per capita, and the worst hard drug addiction in the EU (primarily heroine). Our proposal is for a pavilion with a double life: medical tent during the festival, and health clinic (with a particular focus

on the homeless and addicts) during the rest of the year. In this case, the “iconic” nature of the structure concerns its socially sustainable dimension, not its form. Our proposal is an elegant but inexpensive building – steel frame, polycar-bonate facade and a fi ne grill cladding.

In Memory

The act of preservation promises to pass memories, values and morals

from one generation to the next (preservation: to keep). While this

once took the form of stories or legends, the contemporary practice of

preservation relies in the most part on objects to evoke a memory or

historic event. These objects are carefully selected, curated and

preserved by individuals or societies, presenting a subjective view of

the past. This project exists within this subjectivity but instead requires

history itself to be part of the act of preservation. Much like the process

of fossilisation and the formation of coal, the passing of time doesn’t

destruct, but can preserves. As a result we can challenge the

subjective nature of contemporary preservation by not dictating that

particular buildings or man-made structures be kept on Pyramiden.

Indeed the historical significance at Pyramiden seems not one of

primarily social, cultural, nor architectural significance, but rather one

of the site itself. The landscape has seen settlers come and go as

industries on the island rise and fall, but has itself remained largely

unchanged since the Ice Age. Climate change threatens the landscape

like never before. We propose that from the time the project begins it

acts to preserve an awareness of the landscape. Brass cylinders,

chosen for their robust and non-corrosive materiality are to be

installed in the sea near the settlement of Pyramiden. As the wind

passes over them, their hum will be heard from the shore. With

incisions made through the cylinders to allow for water ingress, as the

sea level rises due to climate change, the level of the water in the pipes

will be higher; therefore the pitch of the sound will rise too. An act of

preservation that does not attempt to freeze time, but instead uses the

passage of time as an integral part of its very creation.

The site is located in the north-west area of the city of Milan of Rho-Pero and is connected to the new infrastructural system designed for the Expo of 2015.The site given for the competition counts 13.760 mq, a rectangular shape with the main axis of orientation north-west/south-east. The site is in proximity of the jewish cementery and therefore the 125 metres radius around the sacred area has to be preserve from any construction.Within the site is located an old water furnace which can be included within the intervention. The new school complex has to host a primary school with the capacity of 200 alumni distributed over 8 classrooms of 25children; an elementary school for 375 alumni distributed over 15 classsroom of 25 children each and a secondary school counting 225 alumni distributed over 9 classrooms of 25 children each.

The Structure of the school has been designed by the inpsoration of the main elements studied in primary and secondary school. The pitagoric table and the alpabeth characterized by the variation within a rigid structure helped creating the main scheme of the scholl which follow the courtyard structure of the typical italian Cascina , quite common in this rural environment. The development of the courses is refelcted also in the design of the landscape, which changes for each course of studies and is inprred by elementary and primitive shape. The result is a building enclosed within a fence-type of structure which present varirty in its inside distribution of the courts and classrooms.

The Extension of the Sport Center include the design of a new buidling, which is the project in which I have been involved to since I have started in Label. the aim is to create a landmark which can be seen accessing the hill by car , and an intervention on the existing within a resonable budget. The buidling is a monolitich element which is cut by different axis which are parallel to the diposition of the tennis courts. The gentle slope of the hill is used to create the underground level with the main entrance from the parking area, with the idea of partially hiding the buidling with the vegetation and discovering it slowly by getting to the higher levels.

The project is a good exercise for understanding the ration between the design project and the available budget .For the low budget offered by the coucil the interventions can be of two types: rebuildng a new smaller center in fron of it or renovating the exhisting.Considering it a symbol for the communy Label decides to intervene on the exhisting increasing the space of the perfomance rooms, spaces for artistic workshops and rethinking the whole circulation. The main project of the last year of the Bachelor deals with the theme of social Housing in the Area of Canning Town-South east area of London.Silverton way site, a long and narrow strip of land in between of the railway and the juction to the A4 highway, has been assigned for a new masterplan. The area of Canning Twon, in the borough of Newham is currently undergoing significant regeneration.‘The Programme includes the building of up to 10,000 new homes, creation of thousands of new jobs and two improved town centres. This £3.7 billion project aims to transform the area physically, socially and economically.Within the framework of this gentrification, my project aims to create a pleasant place to live for families and young couples by creating a hub of housing, new commercial facilities and green space.Being at the junction of a vital infrastructural system the intervention also provides a new cycling route which crosses the site and link it to the Southern Ecological Reservoir of the River Lee.

The proximity of the site to the Ecological Reservoir represents a signifi cant potential to inform the new settlement. The Hosuing project is connected both visually and phisically with the Bow creek.Bridges crossing over the Overground railway are the beginning of a initial zooning of the general masterplan, highlighting the main access and routes. The identifi cation of different fl ora and fauna from the bow creek is an important step to start thinking of a new green area which will provide free public space for the neighbourhood, lacking of trees and parks.

The defi niton of the masterplan is determined by different factors: the original routes structure crossing the site before the construction of Seilverton Way, the proximity to the Bow creek and the need of a signifi cant green space, but most of all the relation with the two infrastructural system sandwiching the site. A consideration on the sound trasmission is vital to understand how to treat the two different boudaries. The four carriage lane has got a tremendous sound impact on the site, compared to the almost- silent Overground railway. The need of protecting visually and acousticaly the site helps designing a wall linear and only interrupted to let the original routes continuing over the Highway. The conformation of the masterplan is therefore characterized by two tipologies, one within the highest wall- building and the other, lower, within the depth of the site.A hortus conclusus rises behind the wall, and shows itself to the street in glimpes , everytime an access cuts the linearity of the building. This green space hosts the fl ora of the Bow Creek and invite people to discover what’ s ove the River.

The thickness of the outside wall is carved to create unique interior spaces in a form of niches.Due to acoustic issues the thicknesses of the walls of the apartments of the highiest building decrese the more they get closer to the garden space.Details and materials help defining the inteririors and the layout of rooms and living spaces. At the ground level of the first typology open spaces are offered for commercial use, transforming the highway into an High Street.A new hub from which will benefit the entire area allowing people to work close to their homes. The second tipology of housing follows the Victorian house tipology with double access, providing a good place for living.

The siedlungen tipology finds here a coherent position even if represents a controversial way of making contemporary architecture.Nowadays the theme of density expresses itself in the form of the skyscraper to accomodate thousands of people. This intervention aims to be more sensibile of the existing site by accepting the isolation of Silverton Way, highlithing it but carving within the wall spaces for commercial exchange. Like a castle my “ homes between a highway and a railway” offers a hidden garden and a safe place to live within the complex city of London.

2012 marked the 200th anniversary of the first publication of the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales. To celebrate this occasion FleaFollyArchitects( tutors Pascal Bronner and thomas Hillier) over the space of 5 weeks, ran a small summer atelier on the outskirts of the Black Forest in Germany. Six students from the London Metropolitan University and I have been choosen to plan and built the ‘Grimm City’ a miniature Cityscape based on the imaginations of the Brothers Grimm. The city has to reflect the world in 200 years time, if human won’t follow the moral of the brother’s Grimm tales: a world of anger and greed.

The design process is definitely the most interesting side of the whole workshop. Each student was asked to comb through 10 classic stories, seeking out major characters and overarching themes that could somehow be turned into characters in Grimm City.In this way each students designes ten characters which will trnslate into major institutions of the Grimm City. The intricately detailed wooden model (which measures 10 feet long and 3 feet wide), is an architectural interpretation of more than 50 Brothers Grimm fairy tales. Each character has been sketched and modelled in paper first, and crafted by hand with the finest wood of the black forest. The resulting city is set in a dystopian environment where greed and megalomania are rampant. But book-to-building translations aren’t literal In fact, the characters and story lines are abstracted to the point that they’re barely recognizable.

The resultan city, represents the interaction between each buildings/characters and a capillar infrastructural system. The manifesto of the city reflects this connection and sounds as a prediction on human near future. Grimm city workshop is an essential exercise to experiment different approach to design but most of all to realise the complex structure of a cityscape entirely artificial and thought with the top down principle, which, I imagine, in its consequences it is not far from any other predesigned city.
