Squaw Rock

By:Michael

The artwork on Squaw Rock was carved by a blacksmith named Henry Church in 1885 near the Chagrin River. Henry Church carved arrows, an eagle, a serpent, a woman with a shell behind her, a skeleton, a dog, and a baby in a papoose. Squaw Rock is 30 feet tall; that’s as tall as a woolly mammoth! If you walk downstream a ways, there is a waterfall. Carvings on the river side of the rock are thought to be carved by someone else.

About Squaw Rock...

Community Importance...

Squaw Rock is a historical landmark that provides a place for people to hike to, have fun and look at some beautiful scenery. Take my advice, Squaw Rock is a very fun place and one of my favorites!

The stone stairs leading to Squaw Rock can be found at the Cleveland Metroparks South Chagrin reservation. My dad’s friend, Matt Mcgowan, helped build and renovate these stairs in 1978. Our family has a tradition of hiking to Squaw Rock nearly every season. In the summer we take bagels down there and eat them on the rock.In the winter this stairwell gets frozen over.To get down the stairs in the winter you have to be very careful because it is icy and slippery. To get to the top of the stairs you need to walk a half mile path to the stairs. Hiking to Squaw Rock is very fun!

The Journey To Squaw Rock...

The Squaw Rock is in the metroparks. The South Chagrin Reservation is right off of Solon Road or Canon Road. You will drive or walk past Look About Lodge (resting stop). Squaw Rock is in Chagrin Falls, OH.
