SPORTS

FANS

The Kokomo High School Athletic

Department would like to welcome all our

loyal followers back for another exciting

year at KHS. We are continuing to make

improvements with our facilities to provide

the best for our student-athletes, fans, and

coaches. We have had a great summer of

workouts and team bonding and look

forward to an exciting year of NCC

competition.

We are all very fortunate to have Terry

Downham back as our Sports Information

Director this year. There is absolutely not a

better SID in the state and the time he puts

in on creating Kat Chatter daily and getting

information to our coaches and fans is

above and beyond.

Missy Newton is back as our Athletic

Secretary thankfully. She has spent a lot of

time working on getting physicals organized

as well as making All Sports passes as the

new year begins. We have sold quite a few

all sports passes already this year and we

are looking forward to the great crowds at

our events. Anyone that calls or comes in

knows how pleasant, helpful, and talented

Missy is and she truly keeps us going in the

right direction.

Aaron Hyman is back for his second year in the Assistant Athletic Director position. He has

been a perfect fit. Aaron has a great understanding of what needs to be done to run the athletic

programs. He is at almost every event as he has a true love for sports and coaching. He enjoys

being around the students, coaches, and fans, and it shows. He has been a great addition to our

department. We are fortunate to have him on board.

There is no way I could name all the outstanding staff and supporters of our Athletic

Department, but I am so fortunate to be able to work with so many professional and passionate

people daily.

The NCC is still comprised of two divisions (East and West) for all team sports except for

football, which will be round robin, and basketball, where all schools will play each other to

determine conference championships. The East Division will consist of Anderson, Indianapolis

Arsenal Tech, Marion, Muncie Central, and Richmond. The West Division will be Harrison,

Kokomo, Lafayette Jeff, Logansport, and McCutcheon. The divisions will help with the

seeding of the conference tournament at the end of the season. Last year the NCC had several

teams make long runs in the state tournament and we feel the competition and the conference

tournament experiences are helping our teams immensely as we get closer to winning the all-

around conference championship.

We are excited about the student-athletes and coaching staffs we have returning. I look

forward to several conference and IHSAA championships this year, and we have athletes that

are easy to root for as they are great representatives of KHS. We had a great year last school

year and that momentum has carried through the summer and we look forward to a great start

this fall.

Remember to pick up your All Sports tickets as they are still on sale. I look forward to seeing

you out at our events this year. If you have any questions please feel free to call us at 455-8053

or email me at [email protected] . Have a great year; see you at the game!

SEASON PREVIEW – GIRLS GOLF

It is that time again to start our golf season. We are entering the 46th

season of Lady Kat golf. It looks like it is going to be another

successful one.

We welcome back the core from our team from last year. Three of the

five girls have been playing on the varsity team for 2-3 years. They

bring a lot of experience to the team this year.

Leading the squad again this year will be Ball State commit and senior

Kiah Parrott. She has already put some great rounds in this summer

and is ready to jump into this season and to head back to State.

Following her is senior Haley Salinas. Haley is a returning varsity

player also. She will maintain her spot as the #2 golfer on the team.

Stepping up to the #3 spot will be junior Molly Mavrick. Molly has

been on the varsity squad for two years. She will be able to improve

and be a strong third score.

There will be a few girls competing for the fourth and fifth spot this

year. Senior Emily Fuller has been with the team for three straight

years and is ready to contribute to the team. Sophomore Layla

Andrysiak worked on her game and is looking to contribute also.

Junior Emma Hawkins will compete for a varsity position also. We

have two incoming freshmen that will be pushing the returning players

and help out the varsity team. They are Elizabeth Lytle and Kamryn

Hahn.

These girls have been working on their game and have set personal and

team goals for this season. We will be very competitive in the NCC,

sectional and regional. We have set goals to advance into the

postseason as a team.

It is refreshing to have these girls return to the team. It will be exciting

to see how they grow this year.

It was the tale of two seasons for the 2018 Wildkats, with a start that

they would rather not repeat. Each year you want to get off on the

right foot and show that all the offseason work paid off.

This season the Kats decided to “push all the chips into the middle of

the table”. Its cliché but we can’t hold back and think about the

“what ifs”. Though we lost some stellar players last year, we will

have a plethora of talent that will be on display.

At the quarterback position, there will be two new signalcallers this

season, Andres Begne (12th) and Kohl Beard (12th). Each has a

different skill set which allows for us to be multiple in what we do,

yet staying true to our core…running the football. In the backfield,

we will have three backs which will get touches this season: Plez

Lawrence (10th), Jaden Armfield (11th) and Ethan Marciniak (12th).

Having three backs keeps them fresh and allows for them to keep

coming downhill at the opponents’defense.

But, none of this can be done without our offensive line. This year we

return four starters: Noah Smalley (11th), Mitchell Van Horn (11th),

Chris White (12th), and Deonte Young (12th). We will have three

newcomers which will allow us some depth which is not a bad thing

on the offensive line. Dalton Berry (11th), Brook Bufkin (11th), and

Sam Baity (11th) will be all vying for that final starting position.

At receiver, we will have some new faces that will help us

tremendously. Noa Wainscott (11th), Masiyah Dowsey (12th), Trent

Price (11th), RJ Ogelsby (11th), and Torian Smith (11th) all will find

the ball touching their hands at some point this season.

(continued on the next page)

SEASON PREVIEW – FOOTBALL

On the defensive side of the ball, we have to replace our three people who were

very disruptive, but I think we have some great young men to do that. At defensive

line, we have Cody Westerman (12th), Devaughn Jones (12th), Bronson Smith

(11th), and Quinntaz Stuckey (12th). At the linebackers spot, we will have a

veteran Miles Lenoir (11th) who finds the ball and is disruptive from that position.

With him, you will have Blake Reed (12th) and Dakota Gunter (9th) splitting time

at one of those positions. In the secondary, we have returning Kohl Beard (12th)

and Ta’Shy Stewart (10th). Each started and played the entire season for us in the

secondary. Joining them will be Chris Thomas (12th) a wide receiver convert who

fills alleys very well and Ja’rece Rogers (10th). Also, Tre Hizer (12th), new to

football this year, will play our overhand safety spot. His speed and length will

help us on the edge.

Returning for the kicking duties will be Anjelo Flores (12th), who is a great asset to

his team with his steady play. Another kicker who will be in the mix is Cole Boruff

(10th), who will split time, just like Anjelo, between football and soccer.

All in all, we want to make these young men enjoy a sport and grow their character

through the life lessons of this sport. We are excited for the season to start!!

The boys tennis team is excited to get on the court this fall. Though graduating

four of the nine lettermen from a year ago, the Kats are confident in the five they

return.

Those five would include junior Jon Callane, who played #1 and #2 singles last

season, Jackson Richards who played# 2, #3 singles and #1 doubles, Nathanael

Elkin who played #3 singles and #2 doubles, Taylor Duncan who played #3 singles

and #2 doubles, and Ty Lauderbaugh, who played #2 doubles.

In addition to the five returning starters, the Kats welcome Pablo Ketterer, who will

likely spend the majority of the season at #2 singles. Pablo is an international

student from Spain and is a very talented player. At this point the next two likely

players competing for starting spots are Drew Swain and Rajon Sellers. Both

played at the top of the JV lineup and have played well so far. Other JV players

knocking on the varsity door would include seniors Shade Chadwell and Bowen

Huang. Time and challenge matches will help us better determine who all will be

in the mix.

Other players on the JV include: Louis Gamez, Isaac Elkin, Bobby Wonnell, Caleb

Wallace, Austin Ferraro, Lucas Cummings, Griffin Hulet, Drake Hester, Jacob

Walker, Karson Parrott, and Dameion Deis.

The Kats have their sights set on defending their sectional championship and also

hope to improve their conference placing from last season. The team feels they

have the capability of competing for the top spot in the NCC, but know it won’t be

easy. The conference looks to be very strong and deep this year with all three

Lafayette-area schools and returning East powers Marion and Richmond being

strong again.

The boys open play on the road against a quality Plymouth team. Our home opener

will be Thursday against a strong Mississinewa team. Both of these teams boasted

district rankings in 2018 and return the meat of their lineups!

Come out and support the Kats!!!

Well the season has begun and we are hitting the courses quickly.

On Monday, August 5th, we skipped school and headed to Lafayette for the

Harrison Invitational. This year it was set up in a different format. There were 11

teams in the tournament and each team played with their own teammates. So we

were in fivesomes for the tournament. The girls were playing for individual awards

and the coaches kept the team score. It was played as 4-women best ball. We took

the four best scores for each hole. This format has it positives and negatives in it.

There was not a lot of competition in the air. It was more of just the team going out

for practice. With this format, we scored a 387. This was good enough for sixth

place. Individually, Kiah Parrott shot a great round at 6-over-78. She tied for

second place individually. The rest of the team did not come out like they wanted

to but we had some good scores. Haley Salinas ended up with 100. Molly Mavrick

followed her with a 102. Playing in their first 18-hole match, Layla Andrysiak shot

a 121 and Emily Fuller had a 124.

Saturday, August 10th, we hosted the 36th Lady Kat Invitational. As a team we

played a lot better. We shot a 355 and placed fourth. We were able to finish this

strong by riding the coat tails of Kiah. Kiah scorched the course and fired a school

record 66 (-7). This was two shots better than her round last year at Battleground

GC. Not only did Kiah’s score help, Molly was able to improve her score and she

came in with an 88. Layla shot 20 strokes better and came in with a 101. Haley was

consistent and shot another 100. Playing in her first high school match, freshman

Elizabeth Lytle shot a 105. Emily was also able to participate in the tournament

and shot a 124.

The Lady Kats hosted the Lady Braves last Monday night. We played another good

round to take the win 170 – 195. Kiah kept her string going and shot a 2-under-34

to earn medalist again.

Rounding out the team score was Molly shooting a 41, Haley shooting a 47, and

Elizabeth shooting a 48.

Other team scores were Layla with a 50, Emily with a 61, and freshman Kamryn

Hahn finished her first nine holes with a 72.

(continued on the next page)

On Wednesday, August 14th, the Lady Kats were led by Ball State recruit and KHS

recordbreaker Kiah Parrott as they defeated Madison Grant 183-211.

Kiah broke another school record in the match. She bettered her 9-hole record with an

astonishing 4-under-32. Kiah is hitting the ball well right now.

Scores from the rest of the team were Salinas and Lytle, both shot scores of 50, while

Mavrick came in with a 51. To round out the scores, Fuller shot a 57.

The Lady Kats headed out to Chippendale Saturday for the Western Invitational.

We were able to hold on and play well, even through a short rain delay with two holes left.

As a team, we shot a 366. This was good enough to take fifth out of 18 teams. We were the

highest placing team in our sectional that participated.

The course was set up to play around 5700 yards. This is longer than we are used to but it is

what we will be playing a lot in the next month.

Kiah had another good round and fired a 1-over 74. This was good enough to place third out

of 90 girls. Haley had a good round and shot a 90, while Molly filled with a 94. Rounding

out the team scores were Elizabeth with a 108 and Layla with a 123.

We are back on the course today when we host Marion. On Wednesday we host Taylor and

Eastern.

Until next tee time,

Coach Carpenter

Kokomo opens their 97th season of football this Friday with a game against New Palestine at

Walter Cross Field. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.

The first football game at Kokomo was actually played on October 27, 1894. The gridiron

sport was stopped for a period of time and then revived by the legendary Chet Hill in the 1923

season.

In their first 96 seasons, KHS has played 919 games, winning 532 of those, while losing 369.

There have been 29 ties. The Kats have a .588 winning percentage all-time.

Kokomo has had winning seasons in 59 of the first 96 campaigns, 61.5% of the time.

In 23 of Kokomo’s 96 seasons, the team has won eight or more games.

Through 96 seasons, Kokomo High School has had just nine head coaches.

Kokomo was 5-6 last season, including a 2-4 mark at Walter Cross Field.

The Wildkats were fourth in the North Central Conference a year ago with a 4-3 record.

Lafayette Jeff and Marion shared the league championship with a perfect 7-0 record, while

McCutcheon finished third. Kokomo tied with Harrison for fourth place.

Kokomo lost 18 seniors to graduation. Five of those 18 were starters on offense, and another

five started on defense in the sectional game with Harrison.

Included in the graduation losses were KHS record holders Steven Edwards and Levi Hrabos

and All-State, First Team Javias Gray. Other starters who graduated included Jabrian Adams,

Brady Wiese, Seth Stonebraker, Julian Wallace, Rylee Burnett, Jason Spear, and Noah

Cameron. The other members of the 2019 graduating class that played football included Deuce

Bailey, Rico Barbary, Arrick Behny, James Bufkin, Andre Nash, Keegan Paul, Kirstin Pierce,

and DeShawn Winston.

Two other starters moved away from Kokomo. Running back Jeremy Baker is now living in

Chicago, while defensive end Jeremiah Neal moved to St. Louis. Both would have been seniors

this year.

There are 64 players on Kokomo’s 2019 roster. Included on the roster are 15 seniors, 16

juniors, 16 sophomores, and 17 freshmen.

BOYS TENNIS

August 13, 2018

Kokomo hosted Plymouth and lost by a 4-1 count.

Jon Callane, a sophomore, provided the Kats with their only point, winning with

a 6-3, 6-4 match over a senior from Plymouth.

Senior Payton McClain and sophomore Jackson Richards played a hotly

contested match at #1 doubles before losing 7-6, 7-5.

The Kats had another close match at #3singles as Taylor Duncan lost in straight

sets by a score of 6-3, 7-5.

Junior Nathanael Elkin was competitive at #2 singles for Kokomo, while the #2

doubles team consisted of freshmanTy Lauderbaugh and senior Lucas Hubbard.

Kiah shot a seven-under-par 66 to break the 18-hole

record in girls golf at Kokomo High School. She also

held the previous mark of 68. Last week, Kiah

continued her onslaught on the KHS record book by

firing a four-under-par 32 to establish a new Kokomo

mark for a nine-hole score.

N.C.C. Student-Athlete of the Week

Kiah Parrott

Kiah, a senior, has been impressive in starting the 2019 high school golf season.

In just the first two weeks of the season, Kiah has set new KHS records for scores

in an 18-hole match (seven-under 66) and a nine-hole match (four-under 32). The

Ball State recruit has been the medalist in three of the five outings this fall, was

second in another, and third in the 18-team Western Invitational.
