Back ground about Uganda Geography
Uganda is a landlocked country located in Eastern
Africa that borders the countries of Democratic
Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South
Sudan, and Tanzania.
Population
35 million, 70% in rural areas. Growth rate: 3.4%.
Economy
GDP growth stands at an average of 5%, reducing
poverty from 56% in 1992/93 down to 19.7% by
2012/13.
o Average GDP growth is about 5%.
o GDP per capita: 572 USD.
Energy situation in schools 96% of educational institutions use fire wood for their
cooking needs with a huge percentage using inefficient cooking technologies.
Some interventions have been done by government to improve on the energy consumption however challenges still exist.
Low access to the national grid with 18% national connection and 8% rural connection. Most of the institutions are dependent on fossil fuel gen sets.
In 2013, 84 percent of primary schools and 87.6 percent of secondary schools were not connected to the grid.
NAMA DESCRIPTION Objectives
Focus on countrywide application of clean energy technologies in schools that will not only solve the most urgent energy needs of the schools, but also bring multiple economic, health, social, and environmental benefits
Purpose of the NAMA
1. Improve the energy conditions of the schools via clean energy technology solutions.
2. Increase involvement of the private sector in financing and implementation of clean energy technologies in schools

stoves (IICS), biomass-based to save on amount of biomass consumed in unsustainable manner.
2. Installation of biogas cookstoves fed by biogas from bio-latrine and other feedstock

MRV plan and sustainable development The Measurement system will focus on three main

MRV plan and sustainable development The goal of verification is to have an independent third
party auditor ensure that the NAMA is operating as planned and that the measuring and reporting system is being implemented as planned.
