Mdm Er, a 55-year-old widow suffering from Schizophrenia, has never worked and has been dependent on a church and her sisters-in-law for financial assistance. The church gives her family $135 a month and some $20 NTUC vouchers while her children receive $2 per day each as pocket money.

Her husband, the primary breadwinner of the family, passed away in December last year from terminal nose cancer. His death had a drastic emotional effect on Mdm Er, causing her to become very forgetful,

On the Saturday afternoon of 15 December 2007, 15 residents accompanied by staff and Sunshine Angels, took part in the ESN Inter-agency Carnival cum Concert 07 held in Yishun Junior College. The event, organized by Elderly Sector Networking group (ESN), invited elderly beneficiaries from various organizations to enjoy a day of fun and games with the volunteers. Various groups of volunteers set up food and games stalls. Sunshine Angels too had a stall, selling coffee, tea and bread toast. The elderly were treated to a series of performances, including a traditional Burmese dance item by our talented nursing staff – K. Soe Thu and Ei Ei Khin.

OutingAre you excited about traveling in the MRT to Chinatown? Unlikely. In fact, taking the MRT is such a huge part of the ordinary Singaporean’s life and a mundane routine that hardly anyone would pause and give some thoughts about it. However, for 20 residents, 6 October 2007 was a day they had been eagerly anticipating all week. Organized by Sunshine Angels, the residents set off for their outing and started with a train ride from Punggol station and alighted at Chinatown station. The e lder l y had the chance to look a round var ious par ts o f Chinatown, did some shopping and settled down for dinner in a Chinese eat ing house. The last stop was a vis i t to the newly-completed Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, where everyone could not help but marvel at its grandeur and splendid architecture.

making it extremely dangerous for her to do any work.

Despite being in such a situation, Mdm Er’s children are doing well in school. Both of them are currently pursuing their A-level education. SWAMI Home Help Service is helping the family by providing Escort service for Mdm Er’s medical follow-up in the hospital. She is also being provided with Meal Delivery service. Mdm Er is thankful that both her children now understand the importance of being responsible persons.

Volunteering activity by BD Medical

AmCham Corporate Community Day was held on 3 November 2007 where member companies of AmCham (American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore) conduct various volunteering events in Singapore. This year, SWAMI Home is once again privileged to be the organization chosen by BD Medical to partner with for its employee volunteering activity. Volunteers from BD Medical came and put up various performances such as a magic show, children’s singing and food demonstrations to entertain and interact with the elderly.

Befriending Walk at Bishan ParkWith the objectives of raising awareness of the eldercare services and fostering a family-like spirit amongst lonely seniors, their family and volunteers, Lions Befrienders Service Association (Singapore) organized a Befriending Walk on 4 November 2007 at Bishan Park 1. The Guest-of-Honour of the event was Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

SWAMI Home was part of this campaign. We set up a booth during the event to increase awareness of the services offered by us. The booth provided free physiotherapy services and advice. Many enthusiastic elderly participants also came by the booth to take part in our ‘10,000-steps Challenge’. Thanks to the generous support from sponsors, we prepared goodie bags to giveaway to some 1,000 participants of the event.

“Karung guni” for a day!320 Secondary 2 students from Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary School woke up earlier than usual on Saturday morning, 19 January 2008, to get a hands-on experience of being a “karung guni” worker for a day. The collection of old newspapers, textbooks, clothing and other items was initiated by Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary School in order to raise funds for SWAMI Home. The five-hour long collection raised a total of $1,343.79 for SWAMI Home! Thanks to our partner, SembEnviro Pte Ltd, who made this project possible, and kudos to the wonderful students at AISS!

put up by volunteers and staff. What is a Christmas celebration without some Christmas fare? Everyone enjoyed the

sumptuous spread of food prepared by Sunshine Angels.

Chinese New Year celebrationOn the fourth day of the Lunar New Year, 10 February 2008, Sunshine Angels organized a Chinese New Year

dinner for staff, residents and volunteers. The dinner kicked off to a vivacious start with the traditional lion

dance and dragon dance. Our residents also did not miss out on another must-have during Chinese New Year –

tossing of yusheng. Mr Raymond Kwek, our staff and volunteers took turns to entertain the audience with their

melodious singing as we tucked into the delectable 9-course fare.
