Welcome to the Michigan FIRST Lego League website!
FLL provides an opportunity for students and mentors to practice FLL Core Values both
within and between teams.
Children (9-14) experience the
excitement of science and technology and learn valuable life skills. Teams
create ideas, solve problems, and overcome obstacles, while gaining
confidence in their abilities to positively use
technology. …where what we discover is more important than what we win

About Us – FIRST Lego League

FLL MI
FIRST Lego League is part of the FIRST family of programs geared for children ages 9-14. It is a partnership between the LEGO® Group and FIRST committed to creating robotic competition programs that will excite and inspire children to excel in math and science.
Every September, FLL releases a Challenge, which is based on a real-world scientific topic. Each Challenge has two parts: The Robot Game and The Project. Teams of up to ten children, guided by coaches and mentors, develop an autonomous robot using the LEGO Mindstorms kit, to score points on a themed playing field (Robot Game). They also research, develop and present a solution to a research problem (Project). Teams may then choose to attend an official tournament hosted by one of our Operational Partners.
The Challenge is “what we do” - Core Values are “how we do it”. The FLL Core Values are the cornerstones of the FLL program. Participants learn that friendly competition and mutual gain are not separate goals, and that helping one another is the foundation of teamwork.
Past Challenges have been based on topics such as nanotechnology, climate and transportation. By designing the Challenges around such topics, participants are exposed to potential career paths within a chosen Challenge topic. Team members also learn valuable life and employment skills which will benefit them no matter which career path they choose.

In Michigan, we have adopted a qualifying tournament system. All officially registered FLL teams in Michigan will have the opportunity to participate in ONE qualifying tournament (see FLL Events). Each qualifying tournament will advance a certain percentage of the teams to one of our two Championship (State) Tournaments.

Team Information – We are a Team!
What Defines A Team? A FLL team is made up of at least 3 and no more than 10 members, between the ages of 9 and 14 years of age. Children can be no older than 14 years old as of January 1 of the current challenge season in order to be eligible to be on a FLL team. Teams often organize through schools, home school groups, youth organizations, religious programs, scout programs or neighborhood groups. For information on how to start a team, go to “Get Involved – Start a Team”. Coaches: A FLL team also needs at least one Coach, 18 years of age or older, who is willing to be the responsible adult for the team. The role of the Coach is to inspire, facilitate and guide the team; however, it is the responsibility of the team members to come up with the designs, solutions, research topics, computer programs and presentation ideas. TIP! Have the parents of the team members share the load! Split up duties and show the kids, by example, how a team works together!
Mentors: Many FLL teams also have Mentors, people who have skills and knowledge in specific areas who can help teams with project research, presentation skills, lego engineering, programming – just to name a few! TIP! FRC team members make great mentors! Find a nearby team at http://www.usfirst.org/whatsgoingon.aspx.

Team Information – FAQQ: Can you place my child on a team? A: FLL MI does not place kids on FLL teams although we get this request all the time. Teams typically form on their own. See “Starting a FLL Team” guide under “Resources”.
Q: How do I know if we are an officially registered FLL team?A: This simply means you went through the registration process via the main FLL site. If your team is listed on the Michigan FLL Team List found under “Resources”, you’re all set! Q: How do I register for a Qualifying Tournament in Michigan.A: Registration for all qualifying tournaments will take place on the same site where you registered your team. For more information, go to “FLL Events – General Information”. Q: Why can't we "officially" participate at more than one qualifying tournament?A: This is our way of ensuring that each team has an equally fair chance of winning awards at the qualifying level and advancing to a Championship Tournament. If a tournament host has room and allows a team to participate as the team's second qualifying tournament, the team is ineligible to receive any awards and can not use that tournament to advance to a Championship Tournament
Q: Can we participate in both Championship Tournaments? A: Absolutely not

FLL Events – About EventsQualifying Tournament Registration Process:
• Check the Calendar and/or Announcements for the specific date and time that the Qualifying Tournament Registration process can occur
•.Registration is done via https://gofll.usfirst.org/, the same site where teams are originally registered.
• The purpose of this Qualifying Tournament Application process is to determine which qualifying tournament each team wishes to attend so we can make tournament assignments in a way that satisfies the highest number of teams possible.
• We'll do our best to place your team at their first tournament choice, but that may not always be possible. Please provide a second tournament choice that works for your team.
•If a tournament receives more applications than their capacity, priority will be given in this order: Teams in the area, Rookie teams, All other teams
•When your application has been successfully processed, you will see your tournament assignment listed on the MI FLL Team List. It will also be reflected in your team profile.
State Championship Tournaments:The qualifying tournament a team attends determines which championship tournament it can advance to. Teams can only attend one Championship tournament.

This pages’ information could be done as a linked document. Then, the page would just have a brief explanation of
each section and a link to the accompanying document.
That would allow space to explain the FLL philosophy of events (celebration of
accomplishments) plus make the connection of the Core Values to
competition.
