WORD PORTRAITS

Word artist, Maude Law-rence, gift to us (temporarily)from Leicester, Mass., is doingword portraits of interestingIslanders. Look sharp! You maybe next! The first of her " I s -land profiles" appeared recent-ly on Mary Cunningham. She andher husband, Ralph, came fora week and (any Islander knowswhat's coming next) have beenhere a month and keep extend-ing their stay. So there willbe more of her Profiles—andhow about a portrait of the wordartist herself? Maude has hada column in her local paper,The Leicester Times-Banner,called "Random Ramblings."Each ramble is a personal let-ter that begins "Dear Reader:

"She has lived in Leicestersince her marriage in 1924.After a career of school teach-ing and happy years of havingher own private kindergarten,Maude is thoroughly enjoying aperiod of trailer travel with herhusband visiting their son inB o u l d e r , Colorado and theirdaughter in Durham, N o r t hCarolina and making extendedside trips as they go. Of alltheir geographical experiencesMaude believes coming to Sani-bel has meant the most to her,not only because it is beautifuland tranquil—there is some-thing challenging to do. Boththe Lawrences are learning allthey can about shells and, inthe course of finding out, theyhave been meeting Islanders andthey like us.

SANCTUARY COMMISSION MAKESPLAMSFOR A CANOE TRAIL

Plans for a canoe trail into the J.N, (Ding) Darling Sanctuary onSanibel were made at a meeting oi the Sanctuary Commission held atthe home of the chairman, Mrs. H.L. Lewis, on Gulf Drive last week.Other Items at the meeting included discussions of possible landnature trails and the appointment of Hervey Roberts of Captivatethe commission to replace the late Harold Bixby.

As visualized, the trail will make it possible for canoeists to getback into the deeper portions of the sanctuary not now accessibleDistinctive markers will be placed not only to lead to points of Interestbut as gaides through the numerous and confusing mangrove Islandsmat in their present unmarked state would make such trips hazardousNo boat motors will be permitted on the trail, to minimize disturbingthe birds, particularly to nesting areas. However, little difficultyIs anticipated on this score, as much of the water involved is tooshallow for motors.

Two of the commission members, "Tom Woods of the U S Fishand Wildlife Service, and Roberts, were appointed a committee tolay out a proposed route. This survey is to start at once, and it ishoped the trail can be to operation for at least the latter part of thewinter visitor season.

It was brought out at the meeting that the Darling Sanctuary hasbecome one of SaaUjel's major attractions. It has become known through-out the country for its numerous and unusual shore and water birds.Even though at present it contains ao facilities except an access road*a high percentage of the tourists and visitors to the island go throughit. During the recent state cosveigion of the Florida Audubon Societyat Lehigh Acres more than 40 delegates made a trip to Sanibel pri-marily to visit the sanctuary.

Commissioners attending the meeting were Mrs, Lewis, Chairman,Mrs, Opal Combs, Secretary, Roy Bazire, Joe Gauls, James Jack,Woods, aad Roberts, Mr. aM Mrs. Richard ross , Darling's son-inlaw and daaghter, were expected at the meeting bat were delayed inreaching the island.
