Docent Tours Wednesdays and Saturdays 2 pm “American Still Life” October 10 - November 28, 2010 The third in a series of special exhibitions drawn exclusively from the Parrish’s permanent collection, American Still Life offers a welcome opportunity to focus in depth on these truly exceptional works. Organized by Alicia Longwell, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator, Art and Education, the exhibition explores the myriad ways generations of American artists have approached the subject of still life painting from the nineteenth century to the present.

This amazing collection of seventy-five historical photographs is a great tribute to the long history of the East Hampton’s journal of record and includes photographs hidden in the Star’s archives since they were taken. This exhibition is a photographic portrait of the historic community of East Hampton that celebrates its vibrant growth over the past 125 years. Join the East Hampton Historical Society at Clinton Academy to rediscover unique pieces of East Hampton history from the hidden treasures taken from the archives of the Star. At Home: Furniture by the Dominy Family 1780-1840 Osborn-Jackson House Museum, 101 Main Street, East Hampton Through 10/12 Tues-Sat 10 am-5 pm $4 adults, $3 seniors, $2 students - Free for members The historic 18th century interiors of the Osborn-Jackson House Museum are furnished with over two dozen examples of furniture made by the same East Hampton craftsmen family who also built two of our village's windmills. From chairs, stands, a tall chest, a tall case clock, to a cradle, it is fascinating to see rooms decorated with local furniture and heirlooms. This season the visitor has the opportunity to see how a prominent Main Street family might have lived in about 1800.

Gallery Hours: Monday - Friday 12 - 4PM or by appointment Saturdays 10 - 6 PM ARTISTS: Deborah Black, Priscilla Bowden, Gail Kern, Margery Gosnell-Qua The focus of the exhibition is "light" and its seasonal effect on the East End Landscape, specifically Autumn, and how this is given visual expression by four artists of the region. While the artists may begin with on-sight sketches, none is a definitive plein aire painter. Each artist refers to color, light, and essential form, with the combined dynamic of observed nature and imagination, giving rise to an individual, personal artistic statement. For Priscilla Bowden, a graduate of the Art Students League of New York, inspiration began while living in the south of France, whose light is often compared with that of the East End of Long Island, and for over 40 years her paintings have paid homage to the American landscape. Gail Kern holds an MFA in painting from the University of Pennsylvania. She chooses to paint the large gestures of a landscape, the East End big skies above agricultural vistas or far-reaching wetlands, with an eye toward abstract composition. Deborah Black earned a BFA from Pratt Institute, NY. She shows an affinity for nuance in trees and foliage, and her treatment of skies could alone serve as complete abstractions. Margery Gosnell-Qua earned a BFA in Painting at Syracuse University and MFA in Painting and MS in Art History from Pratt Institute. Shakespeare in Cinema: Thursday, 2 pm and Sunday, 2 pm $12 Members|$15 Nonmembers “Love’s Labour’s Lost.” Directed by Dominic Dromgoole. 2009. From the Globe Theatre, London. 169 minutes plus one intermission. The King of Navarre and his courtiers have forsworn every kind of pleasure, including women, until a visit from the Princess of France and her lovely entourage pays havoc with their intentions. A humorous tale complete with parody, puns, and surprises, Shakespeare’s celebration of young love is a festive parade of every weapon in the youthful playwright’s comic arsenal, including drunkenness, pratfalls, and silly impersonations. One of Shakespeare’s earliest plays, the Globe Theatre’s acclaimed production was called “entirely enchanting” by the Times and “a treat” by the Independent.

Osborn-Jackson House Museum, 101 Main Street, East Hampton Tues-Sat 10 am-4pm The Osborn-Jackson House, named for its first and last owners, was lived in by six generations of Osborns until the late 1960s. The original portion of the house, probably built in 1723, was the family home of "Deacon" Daniel Osborn. His son Jonathan inherited the house and made additions in 1760. The house was owned successively by his sons Joseph and Sylvanus, his grandson Edward E. Gardiner, and their descendants until the mid-20th century. This colonial house, one of the few still in its original position on Main Street, is owned and maintained by the Village of East Hampton. Lionel Jackson donated the property to the Village of East Hampton in 1977 for use as a museum. It serves as the headquarters for the East Hampton Historical Society and a period house museum for the general public. The museum features a display of furnishings typical of the well-to-do lifestyle of a post-colonial East End family. Highlights of the exhibition include a tall clock, a high chest, candle stands and chairs built in the East Hampton workshop of the Dominy family of craftsmen between 1780 and 1840.

homes on Ocean Road known as “Gernda” which means “green fields” in German. Marcel Kahle (1858-1909) bought the eight acre estate of W. H. H. Rogers on the north corner of Ocean Road and Church Lane in 1904 as well as purchasing an additional adjacent 14 acres. The original home was designed by Charles Skidmore of Riverhead. Later Marcel made extensive renovations, enlarging the house considerably for his family of seven children. The residence included thirteen bedrooms and six maids' rooms, while the property had a caretaker's cottage, carriage house, stable, greenhouse, chicken house, barn, dovecote and other features. After enduring extensive damage from the 1938 Hurricane, “Gernda” was demolished in late 1940. The interview will be co-conducted by BHHS’ archivist and curator, Julie Greene, and the Program Coordinator, Sally panburgh. Participants are encouraged to be involved in the conversation and ask questions. It is expected to last pproximately one hour.

Gallery Hours: Monday - Friday 12 - 4PM or by appointment Saturdays 10 - 6 PM ARTISTS: Deborah Black, Priscilla Bowden, Gail Kern, Margery Gosnell-Qua The focus of the exhibition is "light" and its seasonal effect on the East End Landscape, specifically Autumn, and how this is given visual expression by four artists of the region. While the artists may begin with on-sight sketches, none is a definitive plein aire painter. Each artist refers to color, light, and essential form, with the combined dynamic of observed nature and imagination, giving rise to an individual, personal artistic statement. For Priscilla Bowden, a graduate of the Art Students League of New York, inspiration began while living in the south of France, whose light is often compared with that of the East End of Long Island, and for over 40 years her paintings have paid homage to the American landscape. Gail Kern holds an MFA in painting from the University of Pennsylvania. She chooses to paint the large gestures of a landscape, the East End big skies above agricultural vistas or far-reaching wetlands, with an eye toward abstract composition. Deborah Black earned a BFA from Pratt Institute, NY. She shows an affinity for nuance in trees and foliage, and her treatment of skies could alone serve as complete abstractions. Margery Gosnell-Qua earned a BFA in Painting at Syracuse University and MFA in Painting and MS in Art History from Pratt Institute. Her painting is the most abstract of the four artists, breaking down elements of nature to explore simplified, colorful, gestural shapes, while holding the landscape concept together through skillful composition


“American Still Life” October 10 - November 28, 2010 The third in a series of special exhibitions drawn exclusively from the Parrish’s permanent collection, American Still Life offers a welcome opportunity to focus in depth on these truly exceptional works. Organized by Alicia Longwell, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator, Art and Education, the exhibition explores the myriad ways generations of American artists have approached the subject of still life painting from the nineteenth century to the present.

Osborn-Jackson House Museum, 101 Main Street, East Hampton Tues-Sat 10 am-4pm The Osborn-Jackson House, named for its first and last owners, was lived in by six generations of Osborns until the late 1960s. The original portion of the house, probably built in 1723, was the family home of "Deacon" Daniel Osborn. His son Jonathan inherited the house and made additions in 1760. The house was owned successively by his sons Joseph and Sylvanus, his grandson Edward E. Gardiner, and their descendants until the mid-20th century. This colonial house, one of the few still in its original position on Main Street, is owned and maintained by the Village of East Hampton. Lionel Jackson donated the property to the Village of East Hampton in 1977 for use as a museum. It serves as the headquarters for the East Hampton Historical Society and a period house museum for the general public.

Her roommates come home to discover the attacker bound with cords, belts and other household items.Terry and Patricia, the roommates, express different points of view about rape in society. Terry, a rape victim herself as a teenager, believes that Raul will not be convicted since a rape did not actually occur and there is no proof. Patricia believes in the judicial system and insists on calling the police.

The three friends are also turned on each other at various points in the play, due to Raul's knowledge of each of them.

Museum Art Opening, 6-8 pm. Two new exhibitions, “Cities of Peace,” works by Ellen Frank, PhD., on view through January 16th and the works of Elizabeth Sloan Tyler on view through November 28th. Elizabeth Sloan Tyler is the Winner of the 70th Annual Guild Hall Artist Members Exhibition. “Cities of Peace” honors the history and culture of various cities that have experienced major conflict and trauma, including Jerusalem, Baghdad, Kabul, Beijing, Hiroshima, New York, and Lhasa. Frank’s visit to Jerusalem in 1999 inspired her to produce the first painting in the series and to visualize the creation of other works representing additional cities that have survived strife. The series directs action through hopeful energy by celebrating the best of the human spirit, transforming anguish into beauty. Cities of Peace was produced at the Illumination Atelier in East Hampton, New York, by interns from China, Korea, Colombia, Estonia, Japan, Poland, Hong Kong, Canada, and the United States, under the artistic direction of Ellen Frank. Works devoted to Monrovia, Sarajevo, Hanoi, Dresden, Beirut, Seoul, Warsaw, and other cities will continue the project. This exhibition marks the debut of work by the Illumination Atelier. Two exhibitions, “Cities of Peace,” works by Ellen Frank, PhD., on view through January 16th and the works of Elizabeth Sloan Tyler on view through November 28th. Elizabeth Sloan Tyler is the Winner of the 70th Annual Guild Hall Artist Members Exhibition. “Cities of Peace” honors the history and culture of various cities that have experienced major conflict and trauma, including Jerusalem, Baghdad, Kabul, Beijing, Hiroshima, New York, and Lhasa. Frank’s visit to Jerusalem in 1999 inspired her to produce the first painting in the series and to visualize the creation of other works representing additional cities that have survived strife. The series directs action through hopeful energy by celebrating the best of the human spirit, transforming anguish into beauty. Cities of Peace was produced at the Illumination Atelier in East Hampton, New York, by interns from China, Korea, Colombia, Estonia, Japan, Poland, Hong Kong, Canada, and the United States, under the artistic direction of Ellen Frank. Works devoted to Monrovia, Sarajevo, Hanoi, Dresden, Beirut, Seoul, Warsaw, and other cities will continue the project. This exhibition marks the debut of work by the Illumination Atelier.

Elizabeth Sloan Tyler is the Winner of the 70th Annual Guild Hall Artist Members Exhibition. “Cities of Peace” honors the history and culture of various cities that have experienced major conflict and trauma, including Jerusalem, Baghdad, Kabul, Beijing, Hiroshima, New York, and Lhasa. Frank’s visit to Jerusalem in 1999 inspired her to produce the first painting in the series and to visualize the creation of other works representing additional cities that have survived strife. The series directs action through hopeful energy by celebrating the best of the human spirit, transforming anguish into beauty. Cities of Peace was produced at the Illumination Atelier in East Hampton, New York, by interns from China, Korea, Colombia, Estonia, Japan, Poland, Hong Kong, Canada, and the United States, under the artistic direction of Ellen Frank. Frank’s visit to Jerusalem in 1999 inspired her to produce the first painting in the series and to visualize the creation of other works representing additional cities that have survived strife. Cities of Peace was produced at the Illumination Atelier in East Hampton, New York, by interns from China, Korea, Colombia, Estonia, Japan, Poland, Hong Kong, Canada, and the United States, under the artistic direction of Ellen Frank. Works devoted to Monrovia, Sarajevo, Hanoi, Dresden, Beirut, Seoul, Warsaw, and other cities will continue the project. This exhibition marks the debut of work by the Illumination Atelier. Southampton Family Camps, 10:00 a.m. Free admission. While the summer colony has enjoyed summer on the ocean in their "cottages" since the turn of the 19th century, many local families had their own get-aways on the bays. Often called camps, these uniquely built dwellings are a testament to having abundance without riches. Summer fun, love of the water, friends and getting away from the work of serving community made the family camp a simply wonderful respite. Hilary Herrick Woodward has gathered photographs, interviews through visits with some of the original families.


“Das Rheingold” Opera, 2 – 5 pm The Parrish Art Museum's Opera in Cinema series continues Thursday, November 18 with 2 p.m. screenings of Wagner's "Das Rheingold," the first opera in the famous Ring Cycle. Halsey, Water Mill Whaleman, 1 pm Donations at the door, call 283-2494 to register. “Her Bright Smile Haunts Me Still” is a beautiful Victorian parlor song, written during the 1860s, that struck a chord of truth with young sailors who missed sweethearts and home. The song was one of eleven that Melvin P. Halsey of Water Mill wrote down into the journal of two whaling voyages and one coastal trading voyage. As a young boy, Melvin received a letter from his older cousin, Cady Benedict Rose, who had accompanied her husband, whaling Captain Jetur Rose, on a three-year voyage to the Pacific. This presentation places readings from Melvin’s journal and Cady’s letter into historical context and includes the singing of the songs Melvin heard at sea as he faced the dangerous labors at hand with romantic song in heart. This presentation by Dr. Stephen Sanfilippo and his wife Susan, is based on his doctoral research using Halsey’s journal from the Southampton Historical Museums Research Center.

“Cities of Peace,” works by Ellen Frank, PhD., on view through January 16th “Cities of Peace” honors the history and culture of various cities that have experienced major conflict and trauma, including Jerusalem, Baghdad, Kabul, Beijing, Hiroshima, New York, and Lhasa. Frank’s visit to Jerusalem in 1999 inspired her to produce the first painting in the series and to visualize the creation of other works representing additional cities that have survived strife. The series directs action through hopeful energy by celebrating the best of the human spirit, transforming anguish into beauty. Cities of Peace was produced at the Illumination Atelier in East Hampton, New York, by interns from China, Korea, Colombia, Estonia, Japan, Poland, Hong Kong, Canada, and the United States, under the artistic direction of Ellen Frank. Works devoted to Monrovia, Sarajevo, Hanoi, Dresden, Beirut, Seoul, Warsaw, and other cities will continue the project. This exhibition marks the debut of work by the Illumination Atelier.

From his early days as a drummer to his current status as one of the top-drawing guitarists and vocalists on the blues-rock scene, Montoya has forged his reputation through years of hard work and constant touring. And it all started with a chance meeting in the mid-1970s with legendary bluesman Albert Collins, who offered Montoya a gig as his drummer. Albert took an immediate liking to Montoya, becoming his mentor and teaching his new protégé secrets of the Collins "icy hot" style of blues guitar. Five years later, John Mayall happened to catch Montoya at a jam session and was blown away. This led to Montoya's touring the world for ten years with the legendary Bluesbreakers. Since stepping out as a bandleader in 1993, Montoya has released four solo albums and has performed non-stop at clubs, concert halls and major festivals all over the world. At every show, fans' jaws dropped, and critics raved about Montoya's mind-bending guitar licks and impassioned vocals. Frank’s visit to Jerusalem in 1999 inspired her to produce the first painting in the series and to visualize the creation of other works representing additional cities that have survived strife. The series directs action through hopeful energy by celebrating the best of the human spirit, transforming anguish into beauty. Cities of Peace was produced at the Illumination Atelier in East Hampton, New York, by interns from China, Korea, Colombia, Estonia, Japan, Poland, Hong Kong, Canada, and the United States, nder the artistic direction of Ellen Frank. Works devoted to Monrovia, Sarajevo, Hanoi, Dresden, Beirut, Seoul, arsaw, and other cities will continue the project. This exhibition marks the debut of work by the Illumination Atelier.

Frank’s visit to Jerusalem in 1999 inspired her to produce the first painting in the series and to visualize the creation of other works representing additional cities that have survived strife. The series directs action through hopeful energy by celebrating the best of the human spirit, transforming anguish into beauty. Cities of Peace was produced at the Illumination Atelier in East Hampton, New York, by interns from China, Korea, Colombia, Estonia, Japan, Poland, Hong Kong, Canada, and the United States, under the artistic direction of Ellen Frank. Works devoted to Monrovia, Sarajevo, Hanoi, Dresden, Beirut, Seoul, Warsaw, and other cities will continue the project. This exhibition marks the debut of work by the Illumination Atelier.
