  • We live in a society buzzing with technology, spending our days in a whirlwind of images, products, and information. Inspired by this energy, .MGX challenged some of the top designers in the world to use revolutionary 3D printing technologies to create some special, revolutionary products. The .MGX by Materialise collection is the result of this challenge: a beautiful selection of lamps and accessories that do much more than just light up a room or furnish a house. These are products that engage both the imagination and the senses. They create the mood and bring magic to any setting.

Manufactured using a variety of 3D printing methods, the .MGX collection brings together the best of modern and traditional craftsmanship. Our 3D technologies allow for the production of shapes that would otherwise be impossible to realize. And whether formed out of epoxy or polyamide, each piece is individually drawn and created by laser beam and carefully finished by hand.

The .MGX line of design products is currently exported to over 20 countries worldwide; has received many awards, including three Good Design and Red Dot Design Awards; is featured in numerous international museums, including the MoMA in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris; and regularly appears in top design and decor publications such as: Icon, Surface Magazine, Elle Decor and Vogue Living.

.MGX is proud to be the design division of Materialise, a world leader in 3D printing techniques. In addition to creating the .MGX line of design products, Materialise has developed unique solutions that make a world of difference to the prototyping, manufacturing, and medical needs of its many customers. These customers range from large companies in the automotive, consumer electronics, and consumables sectors; to famous hospitals, research institutes, and clinicians; to individual consumers interested in bringing their own unique creations to life through the online 3D printing service i.materialise.

If you wish to learn more, please visit our websites: www.mgxbymaterialise.com and www.materialise.comThank you for your interest in .MGX. We invite you to explore our catalogue and hope that our products bring you joy and enable you to live magically.

  • your guiDe to 3D Printing

3D printing is the key to making the impossible, possible and is responsible for bringing the .MGX by Materialise collection to life. With this technology, designers experience almost complete freedom in the forms they create, with textures and contours impossible to realize by any other method.

It all begins with a process as old as design itselfthe creative process of bringing ideas to life using nothing more than a pencil, perhaps some ink, and a blank sheet of paper.

When the design is just right, the result is recreated on a computer, being transformed into a 3D model and adapted so that it is perfect for printing. And here is an interesting fact: .MGX gets its name from the software used to create these 3D models - Materialises Magics Software. All files created in Magics are automatically assigned the .mgx extension, much like Word documents are ended with .doc.

Once the 3D model is created, it is sent to one of Materialises 3D printers (like a document to an inkjet printer) and the magic begins...

Using either a powder (for Laser Sintering), or a liquid polymer (for Stereolithography), a laser draws the first layer of the 3D model, hardening the powder or liquid wherever it strikes.

With the first layer complete, the build platform of the 3D printer moves down just enough for a fresh layer of powder or liquid to be spread, and the next layer of the 3D model is drawn, instantly binding to the one below it.

This process is repeated hundreds, if not thousands, of timesuntil the laser draws out the final layer of the design. Supporting structures are automatically added to keep the design together throughout the process.

After the laser has done its job, the build platform is raised, the printed product is carefully lifted out of the 3D printer, the supporting structures are removed, and the item is finished by hand by a team of skilled craftsmen. Like archaeologists or art restoration experts, these craftsmen uncover and remove all imperfections, resulting in pieces that can proudly be displayed in renowned museums and art galleries (as in fact, many .MGX creations are).

Inspired by both the One_Shot.MGX stool and ower blossoms found in nature, this table lamp features a shade which collapses and expands to release or contain light. As with the One_Shot.MGX, the shade is 3D printed as a single piece, including hinges that in one movement transform the shade from a bud to a blossom. And with the complexity of its design, the Bloom lamp succeeds in pushing even further the boundaries of 3D technologies.

As with great music, the Cadence.MGX pendant lamp displays a transition between different harmonies. Notably, for the Cadence.MGX, it is a transition from a rigid pattern to a exible surface - an idea once thought impossible to produce in a single material. The resulting elegance makes the Cadence.MGX a perfect companion to an evening of dining, whether hanging as a chandelier above a table or in a series over a kitchen counter. Suspended alone, it can add a touch of tranquility next to any bed, perfect for relaxing and listening to some opera.

  • Chaos.MgX designed by strand + Hvass

The Chaos.MGX table lamp brings people closer to the order and beauty that can be achieved when chaos is captured and given form. The 1000 sticks which make up this lamp come together to create a complex world into which minds can calmly wander. Emerging from the 3D printer as a single piece, the shade also shows how far we have come with modern technology. The enigmatic Chaos.MGX is perfect next to a sofa, serving as the ideal light by which to just relax.

Designed by Dutch architect Luc Merx, the Damned.MGX chandelier was produced using 3D printing as one piece, without joints or seams, and would be impossible to produce using other manufacturing methods. It appears as a hovering mass of writhing nudes opulent and bombastic and recalls the classical motif of the fall of the damned, challenging viewers with age-old questions of guilt and morality.

The Detail.MGX pendant lamp is an excellent example of the creative possibilities of 3D printing. By stretching his own fi ngerprint around a sphere, the designer was able to create one-of-a-kind swirls through which light can shine. As an accent piece for almost any room, the Detail.MGX lamp will provide not only a mysterious source of light, but will also display a sense of taste as distinctive as the fi ngerprint the lamp is based on.

The radiant Dragon y.MGX pendant lamp draws inspiration from the curved honeycomb structure of insect eyes and their light giving cells. Designed with a focus on functionality and an appreciation for direct and indirect light, this lamp is closed on the upper cells, gradually opening towards the bottom to shield our eyes from glare while producing the amber glow of an August day. Suspend this lamp in a kitchen or dining room to bring a summer feel to the table on even the coldest of winters nights.

The Flame.MGX is proof that a pendant lamp can do more than just light up a room; it can also glimmer with brilliance, and spark our imaginations. Change viewing position and allow the lamp to reveal its secrets. Seen from above it seems to rotate clockwise, seen from below, counter-clockwise, and viewing it in the mirror gives the same effect as turning it upside down. Hang it to transform any space and let its striking geometric patterns of light and shadow spread through the home.

For the Gamete.MGX oor and table lamps, Xavier Lust took inspiration from the tree seeds which drift through the warm spring air each year. The sweeping lines and soft texture of the subtle, white lampshade embody the elegance of these gentle voyagers. Whether the table lamp is placed on a nightstand, or the oor version is set in the corner of ones favorite room, this lamp can bring a touch of serenity to any setting.

One of the most popular lamps in the .MGX collection, the Lotus.MGX draws inspiration from the ower of the same name, a ower so exquisite that it has featured in myths and legends throughout time. First introduced at 100% Design in London in 2003, the Lotus.MGX attracted immediate attention to the revolutionary possibilities of 3D printing. The beautiful glow created by this lamp is further accentuated by the petals of light and shadow that can re ect off of nearby walls. Available in many formats and colors, it is perfect for almost any interior.

The Minishakes.MGX lamp was designed as a space within a space. As a result, it gives the illusion that its gathering natural light from its surroundings before setting free a warm glow from its inner core. As such, it is ideal for transforming interior spaces, whether hanging as a triplet above the kitchen counter, standing as a oor lamp in the corner of the study, or being suspended as a chandelier in the foyer. The Minishakes.MGX is based on an earlier design by the same designer, entitled Handshake, which forms part of the permanent collection at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The Omi.MGX pendant lamp is a true testament to modern technology and shows the amazing potential of 3D printing. Emerging from the printer in a single piece, this is a lamp that begs to be admired and touched. With a bend or a twist, its shape can be transformed, allowing it to be adjusted to compliment different spaces and inspire different moods. Made of nylon, it radiates with a soft, calming glow. It should come as no surprise that the Omi.MGX received a Red Dot Design Award in 2006/2007, further proving the incredible appeal of this unique lamp.

Open_Cube.MGX is an intricate, 3D printed sculpture masquerading as a table lamp. When turned off, the eye is immediately drawn into the darkness of its centre, while at the edges, all is airy and light. By contrast, when lit, this lamp creates the illusion that light has been captured and given a space in which to oat freely. As such, it is a wonderful addition to any shelf, side table, or desk calling out for an artistic touch.

The Palea.MGX pendant lamp has an incredibly modern appeal. This is in contrast with its name, which comes from the Greek word paleo, meaning ancient or prehistoric. Being the fi rst product that could also be sold on CD (as a 3D printable fi le), this ground-breaking lamp was recognized for its revolutionary creativity, winning the FNAC design purchase competition in June 2004. It is an ideal addition to an entryway, or above a kitchen table, and can spread color throughout any home or offi ce.

  • russuLa.MgX designed by Arik Levy

The Russula.MGX light object takes its name and shape from a mushroom one of natures most fascinating creations; fast growing and delicate, with both architectural and structural qualities, it reveals the most beautiful intricacies when sliced. Bringing this form to the contemporary world through 3D design allowed for the creation of a shade with a complex structure inside and great simplicity outside. With light that is both smooth and evenly distributed, and a slender supporting structure, the Russula.MGX seems to oat and hover in space.

Inspired by the geometric form of the same name, the Torus.MGX oor lamp has an elegant, clean design, created through the use of complex mathematics. The delicate surface texture produces a dance of shadow and light that radiates with a quiet serenity, perfect for bringing a calming atmosphere to both the bedroom and living room. Designed on a computer and printed by laser, it is a lamp so intricate and seamless that, like most .MGX products, it would be impossible to create any other way.

The Tulip.MGX table lamp is how these owers would look in nature if they could be redesigned and perfected using the power of modern technology. Alone, these lamps can bring romance to a nightstand or color to a fi replace mantle. Together, in multi-colored groups, they can create an entire garden of light; perfect for resting on a cabinet behind the sofa, on the breakfast bar in the kitchen, or on a gorgeous coffee table in the corner of the living room.

assa ashuaCh omi.mgX (p. 52)Assa Ashuach was born in Israel in 1969 and completed a BA in product design at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design. Just after graduating, he opened a studio that dealt mainly with design in cooperation with architects. One of the studios major projects was the football stadium VIP lounge at Bloomfield Tel Aviv. In 2001, Assa moved to London where he continued to work on his studios projects while completing a MA at the Royal College of Art and Design. He graduated in 2003 and received the RCA Society and Thames & Hudson Art Book Award for that same year. His studio today focuses on three main tracks: product design, collaboration with archi-tects and self-production. Assa also teaches 3D design using digital tools and machinery, and has exhibited at different galleries and museums, including the Esplanade Spiral Building in Tokyo, to which he was invited by IDEE. Some of Assas work was bought by The Contemporary Art Society for The Special Collection Scheme in London in 2004.

Jiri evenhuis metropoLis_ii.mgX (p. 46), torus.mgX (p. 70), open_CuBe.mgX (p. 54) Jiri Evenhuis was born in 1973 in Amsterdam and graduated from the Amsterdam Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2000 as an industrial designer. Since then he has worked as an independent interior architect and product designer developing lamps, chairs, tiles, and fashion accessories, and creating complete interiors for offices, private houses and night-clubs. In all of his work, he consistently demonstrates a strong, passionate, and personal approach. In the late 90s, he invented the first ever 3D printable cloth which was developed together with Janne Kyttanen. In the summer of 2002, they founded Freedom of Creation, a design and research company which develops concepts and products made with 3D printing technologies.

bathsheba grossMan fLame.mgX (p. 30), Quin.mgX (p. 58), torus.mgX (p. 70)Bathsheba Grossman was born in 1966 in the US. She received a degree in mathematics from Yale (1988), and then changed course to study art at the University of Pennsylvania (1993). She studied sculptural principles and metalworking with Erwin Hauer and Robert Engman, two mathematical sculptors who were both trained by Josef Albers. After several years experience making bronze sculptures by traditional methods, she switched to CAD/CAM in 1998 and began designing sculpture digitally for production by 3D printing. Since then she has been making sculptures using many technologies including lost-wax casting, electroforming, stereolithography, ZCorp printing, and most recently Prometal direct steel printing. Along the way she also started Protoshape, a 3D printing service bureau. Bathsheba also designs artwork for subsurface laser etching in glass, and in that medium she has created a line of scientific images based on astronomy, molecular biology and mathematics, and a service for imaging protein structures that is used by most major pharmaceutical companies and many research centers.

Peter Jansen tuLip.mgX (p. 74)Peter Jansen was born in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, in 1956 and sadly, passed away in 2011. The son of an inventor, he developed a unique way of looking at the world. After studying mathematics, physics and philosophy and working in education, he returned to his original interest in art, and taught himself to work with metal and wood. In 1992, he began making sculptures in bronze and then in 2005 discovered computer design which sent his creativity in an entirely new direction. Using highly specialized software as a medium to create virtual objects, Peter then transposed them, via rapid prototyping, to solid, three-dimensional sculptures. From mathematical point clouds of dots, Peter created new virtual worlds in which he explored the interrelation of movement and space a new approach to a subject which he had already examined. The shapes that resulted from this new approach were sculptures that fit well in urban public spaces, office buildings and other interior areas, as well as in the open air. Peter left a legacy of intriguing art and design and .MGX is very fortunate to have had an opportunity to collaborate with him.

The latter led to studies in computer science and eventually a BSc and PhD in electrical engineering. Today, as the founder of NOMILI, digital design and additive manufacturing are Michaella Janse Van Vuurens creative tools. Her works include light-ing, sculptures, functional objects and jewelry. Living on a smallholding outside of Pretoria, she is surrounded by the African bush, which often serves as inspiration for her pieces. In 2009, her chrysanthemum centerpiece was voted to be Design Indabas Most Beautiful Object in South Africa.

PatriCk Jouin BLoom (p. 10), one_shot.mgX (p. 88)Born in 1967, Patrick Jouin is one of the major protagonists of contemporary design on the French and international scene. Since 1999, his Parisian agency has distinguished itself by the diversity of its activities: construction design, architecture, industrial design, handicraft, scenographies, and street furniture. Its estimated, that on a typical day of walking around Paris, one encounters a Patrick Jouin design every 350 metres; He has contributed over 46,000 designs to the urban landscape. In 2009, the Centre Pompidou in Paris held an important retrospective on the work of the designer. In 2010, he received his first solo show in the United States at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in New York.

Arik works both as a scientist and a poet. His well-established repertoire of innovation, simplicity and experimentation permit him to create novelties and translate concepts into experience both in the art and design worlds. He is best known for his many awards, outstanding design museum pieces, and his professional designs for clients including: Vitra, Visplay, Ligne Roset, Desalto, ic-berlin, Balleri Italia, Gaia&Gino, Cinna, Dietiker, Magis, Seralunga, David design, Ansorg, Belux, La Fayette, Loral, and Lampert.

Xavier Lust gamete.mgX (p. 32)Born in 1969, Xavier Lust studied interior design in Brussels where he opened his own studio in 1992, working in various fi elds from urban furniture and interior architecture to industrial commissions and limited edition pieces. His design is clearly identifi able through the visible tension he gives to his objects, and the curves inspired by his innovative (de)formation process of metallic surfaces. Since 2000 his objects and furniture have been produced by leading Italian brands such as MDF Italia, De Padova, Driade, Cerruti Baleri and Skitsch and have received many important awards including Compasso dOro. Shown in over 50 exhibitions worldwide, Xaviers work was the object of a signifi cant retrospective in 2007 at the Macs Muse des Arts Contemporains in Belgium and is part of the permanent collection of museums such as the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Muse des Arts Dcoratifs in Paris. He is a frequent guest lecturer at major art and design institutions and is regularly featured in many international design publications.

LuC MerX damned.mgX (p. 20)Interested in the borders between architecture, design and art, architect Luc Merx founded his practice, Gagat International, in Rot-terdam in 1999. In 2003, a grant from the Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture (Fonds BKVB) provided him with the opportunity to study the parallels between late baroque architecture in Southern Germany and the in uence of computers on modern architecture. This resulted in the design and research project Rococo relevance. In 2007, he designed his fi rst piece for .MGX, entitled Damned.MGX, based on this theme. Luc has taught at several schools, including the Universities of Technology in both Eindhoven and Darmstadt, and is currently a professor at the University of Technology in Kaiserslautern as well as head of the Maastricht Building Academy.

werteLoberFeLLPLatForM dragonfLy.mgX (p. 28), diatom.mgX (p. 26)WertelOberfell - Platform was founded in 2007 by Gernot Oberfell and Jan Wertel. Both studied Industrial Design in Stuttgart at the State Academy of Arts, a school which is based on the Ulmer Schule and Bauhaus models. Before the founding of their London based practice, they worked for several years in Ross Lovegroves Studio X, designing for international clients including: Artemide, Yamagiwa, Louis Poulsen, Moroso, Serralunga, Sony, VitrA/Turkey, Issey Miyake, and Tag Heuer. In 2010, WertelOberfell opened a second studio in Munich. Their work ranges from furniture, lighting and industrial products, to experimental research pieces. WertelOberfell share a strong interest in new technologies and processes and very early in their careers, discovered the possibilities of computer aided design and the idea that software is not just an everyday tool, but through experimentation, is also a source of inspiration and a vehicle for discovering new and exciting form languages. Their work combines these experiments with the logic and beauty of organic forms and the reality of product design: the right use of materials, production processes, ergonomics and functionality.
