"K" Series – Right Angle Helical/Bevel MGS ReducerInstallation Instructions
WARNINGCover rotatingparts with safetyguard beforeturning onpower.
Thank you for purchasing a Stober drive. In order to obtainlong life and trouble-free operation from your MGS speedreducer/gearmotor, it is essential that the installation andoperating procedures outlined in this manual be followed.
This manual includes directions for mounting and start-upof the MGS unit, as well as lubrication and maintenanceinstructions. Failure to follow these instructions will voidthe drive's warranty.
If you have questions about the installation, operation ormaintenance of your MGS unit, please contact your localStober distributor for assistance.
WARNING:
Safety is the most important consideration when operatingany type of drive. Through proper application, safe han-dling methods, and wearing appropriate clothing, you canprevent accidents and injury to yourself and fellow work-ers.
The shafts of MGS speed reducers and gearmotors rotateat very high speeds and can cut off or severely injurehands, fingers, and arms. Use appropriate guards forshafts and other rotating parts at all times. Follow alldirections in the service instruction manual. Obey allfederal, state and local safety regulations when operatingthe drive.
● Always be sure electrical power is off while makingelectrical connections and during installation andmaintenance of the unit.
● Keep clothing, hands, and tools away from ventilationopenings on motors and from all rotating parts duringoperation.
● Lift drive with a double rope sling or other proper liftingequipment of adequate strength. Make sure load issecured and balanced to prevent shifting when unit isbeing moved. Lifting drives by hand may be danger-ous and should be avoided.
● The intended use of lifting lugs is to handle the weightof the unit only. Never use a lifting lug to lift attachedassemblies.
● Never operate drive at speeds higher than thoseshown on the nameplate, or personal injury mayresult. Contact Stober Drives Inc., if there is anychange of operating conditions from those for whichthe unit was originally sold (as stamped on the name-plate). Failure to comply could result in personal injuryand or machinery damage.
● Always follow good safety practices at all times.
Each drive is tested before delivery. Before installation, however, it is advisable to examine the unit for possibledamage which might have occurred during transit. Ifdamage is discovered, it should be immediately reportedto the transport agent.
If installation is delayed after receipt of the MGS speedreducer/gearmotor, the drive should be stored in a clean, dry place until put into service. Long term storage requiresspecial procedures. If not kept in a heated, dry area, consult Stober Drives, Inc. for storage instructions.
NOTE: If it is necessary to clean drive shafts, take careto protect the oil seals.
IMPORTANT: Do not use any device to hammer theunit onto the output shaft during installation since thebearing races could be damaged.
Some motor manufacturers provide adrain hole in the mounting face ofwashdown motors. Be sure this holeis covered during washing or whenthe unit is used in a wet environment.
Conduit Location
On Stober reducers, the standard location for the conduitbox is shown in the following diagrams and is specified aslocation 0°. Should the conduit be required in any otherposition it should be specified at the time of order. Thelocation of the conduit should be determined in connectionwith the mounting location in order to provide the properamount of lubricant at the time of shipment.
If no specification is made the units will be shippedwith the conduit in the 0° position.
Maintenance
With Stober reducers very little maintenance is requiredunder normal operating conditions.
We recommend that the lubrication be changed in sizesK5 thru K10 after 5000 hours of operation or after 2000hours of operation if the reducer is in a moist environment.
Lubrication and Mounting Position
All Stober units are shipped filled with the required amountof lubrication.
The mounting positions and the required amount of lubri-cant for each position is shown on the following pages.
In order to provide the proper lubrication quantity theposition required should be specified at the time of order. No unit will be shipped without the mounting positionspecified by the customer.
Positions such as EL3 or EL4 may require differentseals, bearings, etc. so it is very important to mountthe unit in the position for which it was assembled.
NOTE: Although the mounting positions are illustratedshowing only gearmotors, Stober reducers require thesame quantity of lubricant.
Breathers are provided on sizes K5 to K10. See tables forlocation of drain and vent for each mounting position.
Table No. 1 shows recommended lubricant manufactur-ers and specifications.

"K" Series – Right Angle Helical/Bevel MGS ReducerInstallation of Hollow Output
Mounting Hollow Output Reducers
A Stober hollow output reducer can be mounted fromeither side. The tolerance for the hollow bore is shown inTable No. 1 and the shaft should be toleranced to fit thisbore accordingly.
A keeper plate inside the quill is provided with each unit toprevent axial movement. This keeper plate is held in placewith snap rings and can be easily removed for location oneither end. A spring pin in the keeper plate mounts into thekeyway of the quill and prevents rotation. The keeper platecenter hole is tapped to fit the removal bolt.
Before installation, brush the inside of the quill with rustinhibiting grease. When mounting the unit onto the shaft, avoid hammering as this may damage the bearings. Donot mount the reducer dry as removal may be impossible.
The drawing above shows a mounting and removal bolt. The mounting bolt should be smaller in size than theremoval bolt. See Table No. 2 for the size of the removalbolt.
To use the keeper plate with a mounting bolt, drill and tapthe end of the shaft that will be mounted into the reducer.Insert the mounting bolt through the keeper plate andthread into the shaft end. The shaft engagement should bethe "UL" dimension as shown in Table No. 2.
Removal of Hollow Output Reducers
To dismantle the unit from the shaft, remove the mountingbolt. Thread the removal bolt into the keeper plate to pressagainst the shaft and loosen the shaft from the unit.Removal of the reducer will be easier if the quill is greasedbefore installation.

"WF" Bushings for "K" Series MGS ReducerSingle Sided Bushing – Installation Instructions
NOTE: The gap from the pressure ring (39.010) to the clamp ring (39.020) should remain the "U" dimension asshown in Table No. 1 until the unit is mounted onto the shaft. The "Black Bolts" are installed to maintain this distance.DO NOT REMOVE the black bolts until the unit is installed onto the shaft.
Mounting of Reducer
1. The machine shaft should have a chamfer of 1/32 x 45°minumum for ease of installation. Mount the gearbox withbushing installed onto a clean shaft. Guide the shaftthrough the bore of the quill until it penetrates the supportring on the opposite side. The shaft must be long enoughto engage the support ring (39.050) in order to be "wobblefree".
2. Remove the black bolts used as spacers and tighten thecapscrews (39.100) to the torque shown in the followingtable. Use a torque wrench. The tightening should bedone gradually in a rotating sequence and will require morethan one (1) rotation to tighten properly.
After two (2) hours (minimum) running time, checkcapscrews and retighten to the specified torque, ifnecessary.
Removal of WF Bushing
1. Loosen all capscrews (39.100).
2. Mount two (2) of the capscrews into the tapped holes ofthe clamp ring (39.020) to back off the clamp ringassembly and release pressure between the flangedcone and the tapered cone.
