MEXICAN CESSION Was the Mexican Cession Just or Unjust? Slide 2 Mexican Cession President Polk still wanted U.S. to expand further West into California and New Mexico by purchase or force. He tried to buy the territories from Mexico. Mexico said NO!!! President James K. Polk Slide 3 Mexican Cession Fighting on the Rio Grande Mexico was still angry about Texas Annexation and didnt agree with the borderline. Mexican soldiers fired on U.S. border troops. Polk asked Congress to declare war on Mexico and they did. The Mexican president said U.S. used this as an excuse to take his land. Slide 4 Mexican Cession U.S. forces took New Mexico without a fight. U.S. troops arrested and jailed the Mexican commander of California. Soon all of California was under U.S. control. U.S. soldiers volunteering for the Mexican War Slide 5 U.S. Invades Mexico Kentuckian General Zachary Taylor and his troops led the invasion into Mexico. His troops forced Mexican troops to retreat. The U.S. gained Northern Mexico. U.S. General Scott battled into Mexico City (the capital). He captured the capital from the Mexicans in a long and bloody battle. American cavalry overwhelming the Mexicans in Texas Slide 6 The Treaty of Guadalupe and Hidalgo In the treaty, Mexico was forced to give up the Mexican Cession (current states of California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and parts of Colorado and Wyoming) The U.S. had to pay Mexico $15 million for half of Mexicos territory in North America. Slide 10 The Gadsden Purchase Americans wanted to build a railroad to California wanted a southern route railroad. They wanted it built entirely on American soil but needed land that was relatively flat. James Gadsden, Ambassador to Mexico, negotiated an agreement with Mexico about the needed land. With the Gadsden Purchase, the U.S. paid Mexico $10 million for the southern parts of (what is now) Arizona and New Mexico. The boundary with Mexico was now fixed.
