Soen Roshl, Maxliia Sensel and his assistant, Wako-san stayed with us, both In the N e w York Zendo Shobo-jl and In the C a t s k i l l Mountain International Dal Bosatsu Zendo f o r 99 days. During this time, Seen Roshl, together with Tal-san, Conducted two sesshlna at Litchfleld and the first historical aesshln at the Dm1 Bosatsu Zendo. Over 100 Sungha members p~rtlclpated. Maxim Sense1 finlahed ft huge painting for the D a i Bosatsu Zendo during his s t a y there. The paint ing I s of The Buddha showing a flower to a large assembly and of his disciple Mahakasyapa gulling at this true teaching. In the painting, the assembly gathered around The Buddha Includes about 125 wonderful figures..,, monka, Bodhls~ttvas, Arahats, Christians, heavenly beings, children, American Zen figures, and many animals, as well as Manjusri and Fugen Bodhlsattva, who are at The Buddha's s i d e s . This truly wonderful painting I s l i k e a symphony, as Soen Roshi said, and will be considered as one of the masterpieces of t h i s century. Alan Schier made a big wooden f n r e for the palntlng. We held the farewell party f o r Roshi, Maxloa Sensel and Wako-san on September 19th In the New York Zendo. The next d a y Soen Roshl d e p a r t e d for Jerusalem and Maxim Sensel and Waku-san returned to Japan.

.During his stay, Tal-san asked Soen Roshi to become the Abbot of the D a l Bosatsu Zendo and he accepted, Nyogen Senzmkl Bosh1 will be the Honorary F i r s t Abbot. Soen Roshi agaln asked Tal-san to accept the t i t l e of Roshl, but Til-san wishes still to postpone accepting It. The Roshi mine that Soen Roshi selected for Tal-san Is "Mul-shltsu,*' which I s from The Rlnzal. Roku.... "True Man Without Rank."

On September 15th, Soen Roshl and Tal-san l e d the ceremony to celebrate the 3rd anniversary of the New York Zendo in the 67th Street building. The occasion was especially mmrked by the ordination of the first New York Singha Açerlca monk, "Relzan Dal-KO" (Chuck Carpenter). As a monk, Chuck is now to be called Dal-KO. Dal-KO means ^Dhaxm Carpenter" and Relzan means "Spiritual Mountain". D h a r u names were also given that night to students of long standing and devoted practice , and we are now using those names tong st e ~ c h other,

On September 5 t h , t he historical f irst sesshin was begun at the D a l Bosatsu Zendo, l a s t i n g f o r five days and attended by 23 aembers, i n d u e ) Ins one student of Nyogen Senzaki Roshl, who flew from California to be with us. A l i t t l e di f ferent that usual, this sesshin was a SMU-work-sesshln, combining periods of hard work with periods of Zazen. It was very successful t o he lp In establishing traditions and Zen spirit at D a l Bosatsu Zendo and In accomplishing some M jor work jobs t h a t needed to be done.

In residence at the D a l Bosatsu Zendo now are Dal-KO (Chuck) as Resident Director, Mal-Shln (Mike Sopko) as Resident Assistant Director, and Myo-KO (Carol Snyder) as Secretary and Cook. Dal-Shin (Steve Levlne) who I s now a resident In the New York Zendo, has been asked to Join then soon.

Basically, the schedule and rules of the New York Zend o and the Dal Bosatsu Zendo are the same, as they are twin brother Zendos, but since the Dal Bosatsu Zendo I s I n the seclusion of the mountains, there are few outside distractions, so I t I s a little more monastic. The New York Zendo is a place where people of the c i t y may practice Zazen together, and I t I s a l s o a kind of entrance place, In many ways, for people who are new t o Zen or to I t s practice in N e w York. The Inter- natlona.1 D a l Bosatsu Zendo will be the t ra in ing center for these same people who wish to make the practice of Zen a permanent and deeper pnrt of t h e i r l ives . At present, every week-end , about seven t o ten people can v i s i t the D a l Bosatsu Zendo, participating In the schedule of Zazen, work study, and free rest t i m e . On the second week-end of each month, members can attend w l t h their children. On the third week-end of each month, due t o the monthly week-end sesshln In the New York Zendo, the Dal Bosatsu Zend o w i l l be closed. It I s now being planned t h a t from November on, some students may arrange to s t a y In the D a l Bosatsu Zendo f o r a period of one week or more Intensive practice, w l t h Tal-sanes approval.

As the director of the Dal Bosatsu Zendo, Tal-san deeply wishes t o develope the D a l Bosatsu Zendo slowly and with a w e l l rooted foundation. So, at this point, only a United number of students w i l l be able t o go there. After t w o or three years of gradual growth, there w i l l be a need f o r larger fac i l i t i e s to accomdate both New York Zendo Sangha and students from other Zen groups. The architectural plans and finan- c la l provlslons for these developments are now being carefully studied by The Board of Directors of The Zen S t u d i e s Society, Inc.

On October lst, mny Sangha members celebrated Tal-san's 39th birthday after Fr iday evening Zazen. L y d i a Bobrltsky made a beautiful speech, deeply thanking Tal-san on behalf of all of us, for bringing the teachings of Buddha. Dharia to America and for working with all his might to h e l p I t take true root. As everyone felt, I t was a very happy occasion.

On October 8th. we will hold a. farewell party for So-Shin (Janis Levlne) who has been a member of The Zendo f o r four years. She w i l l be departing f o r Japan, where, for one year, she w l l l study Tea at The Urasenke School In Kyoto and w i l l also attend sesshlns at Ry~tak~jlo So-Shin is a partial Zen Studlea ,Society Inc. exchange student. B e l - S e k l ( 3111) and So-Kyo(M1lly) Johnstone w i l l a l so be going t o Japan at that t l a e . B i l l will be studying Japanese Zen architecture for future use In building the Dal Bosatsu Zendo. Mllly w i l l be studying Tea and Zen. Myo-Kun ( Margot ~ l l k l e ) will also join them In Japan t o attend the October sesshln at Ryutakujl.

Ho-KO (Debby Matthlessen) began teaching a course In Zen at The New School f o r Social Research this fall semester, C h l - G e t s u (Ruth Llllenthal) began teaching a course In Zen at Long Island University, Brooklyn Division, also this fa l l semester.

The week-end sesshlns f o r October and November are scheduled as follows*

October - Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th November - Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st.

Wednesday, December 1st--- t o Sunday, December 5th

The training period for the second half of 1971 will end Friday December 17th and The Zendo wlll be closed until January 1st. New off Qcers for 1972 and the new schedule and plans wlll be made up by December 17th.

This June 18th. our long time Dharma friend, Lim Holman Reynolds SchwAtr passed away. Memorial Services were held for her both at the New York Zend o and Dal Bosatsu Zendo. The whole Sangha. extend s their deep condolence t o Louis Shanker. Her generous spirit and charmlng presence are very much m i s s e d 'by the Sangha.
