What is BATA?
• The responsibility for the administration, operation and upkeep of the seven state-owned bridges that span the Bay is shared by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), in its role as the Bay Area Toll Authority (BATA), and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).
• The seven state-owned bridges are the Antioch, Benicia-Martinez, Carquinez, Dumbarton, Richmond-San Rafael, San Francisco-Oakland Bay and San Mateo-Hayward bridges.
Toll Bridge Seismic Retrofit Program
• Assembly Bill 144 by Loni Hancock (D-Berkeley)
was signed by the Governor on July 18, 2005
• AB 144 outlines a funding agreement to complete the
Toll Bridge Seismic Retrofit Program, and calls for raising
Bay Area bridge tolls by $1 (to $4 for autos) starting
January 1, 2007.
• AB 144 allows construction to move forward on the
single tower, self-anchored suspension (SAS) span of the
San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge
BATA’s Expanded Responsibilities
In August 2005 the California Legislature expanded BATA’s responsibilities to include administration of all toll revenue and joint oversight of the toll bridge construction program with Caltrans and the California Transportation Commission.
