Coach: Brian Wical, third year, 4-16Last year: 4-6 (1-5 TAAC)Forecast: Cardinal Stritch made signifi -cant strides in 2014, Wical’s second sea-son with the Cardinals. This year’s team will have to make up for the graduation of several key players, including quarterback Joe Sinay, who started both seasons under Wical.

Senior Trent Besgrove, who played de-fensive back in fi ve games last season after transferring from Lake, will replace Sinay under center. Sinay led the team in rushing (878 yards, 12 TD) and threw for 983 yards and eight touchdowns.

“One of the things I’ve seen from Trent is his growth and understand-ing of the offense,” Wical said. “He started against Northwood last year in his fi rst varsity game. That was kind of an eye-opener for him. He’s doing a really good job learning the offense. He’s

a smart football player and makes good de-cisions most of the time.”

Stritch returns six starters to its spread offense, and six on defense. Depth, howev-er, could become a problem, as only 33 play-ers were on the initial roster this summer.Senior Kevin Hohenberger should see the bulk of carries at running back after backing up that spot last year, when he was also a starting strong side linebacker. Hohenberger had 59 carries for 291 yards and three touchdowns as a junior.

“Kevin, toward the end of last season, we thought he would be one of our best re-turning football players,” Wical said. “He’s not real shifty and he won’t juke people, but he will break tackles and he’s a strong runner. He’s a quick kid, a strong kid. We think he’s a solid asset in our backfi eld and right now maybe our most dangerous weapon.”

The Cardinals will have to replace top receiver Chris Blazevich, a two-way stand-out (he also played cornerback) who caught 19 passes for 252 yards and two scores). His spot will be fi lled by senior Tanner Langlois in the slot, junior Noah Wolfe and freshmen Marvin Ham and Paul Latz.

“Tanner has experience,” Wical said. “He split time at his position, so he only got about half the reps. Latz is probably our

Cardinal Stritch Cardinals (Photo courtesy of Lifetouch)

fastest receiver and he brings a lot to the table. He’s 5-6 and plays about 6-foot and catches the ball extremely well. Noah is maybe our most all-round athletic receiver. He runs, jumps and catches well and is a tough, gritty kid. He’s always gonna give you 100 percent.

“Marvin is probably the most gifted kid we’ve got in terms of catching. He’ll go up and get the football. He’s a decent sized freshman and kind of a physical kid. He runs our crossing routes across the mid-dle.”

Stritch returns three starting of-fensive linemen and has added senior Adam Druckner at tackle. Druckner started on the defensive line a year ago.The Cardinals allowed 28.7 points a game last season, and Wical is confi dent the de-fense can improve.

“I think our defense is pretty good,” he said. “the defensive line and offensive line are playing pretty well. One of our big chal-lenges since I’ve been at Stritch has been the ability to score points. Our defense is probably better than we have been. I don’t think we’ll get in shootouts, where we’re

scoring 30 and giving up 30. If it’s gonna be a close football game, it will have to be in that 21-14 range. That seems to be who we are.”

The Cardinals graduated both safeties and both corners last year, and those posi-tions will be fi lled by Latz and sophomore Kyle Boehm at corner, and Besgrove and Wolfe at safety.

“All the kids on defense are the same kids on offense,” Wical said. “Our best de-fensive player will probably be Bruckner at defensive end. He has a motor that never stops. He’s one of these kids that he just goes and goes and never checks himself out of a drill or a game.”

Hohenberger was the team’s top tackler last year with 72 stops, including 17 tackles for loss.

“Kevin has a knack for the football and fi lls holes well on defense,” Wical said. “He hits hard and does a perfect form tackle when he hits a kid.”

Wical said the team’s goals are simple: to improve every day and be a better team at the end of this season than it was at the end of last season.

Coach: Mike Lee, third year, 4-16Last year: 2-8 (1-6, TRAC)Forecast: Lee said the players proved in the offseason that they are ready to return to a more wide-open attack.

“The boys did not put in a good off-season a year ago,” Lee said. “We were contemplating going wing-T and we had a backup plan. If they would work the plan over the summer, we would have gone to the passing game a little more during the season. They didn’t go in the weight room or put the time in, so we said, ‘Receivers, you’re going to learn to block.’ All these guys are a year older.”

The Eagles return fi ve starters on of-fense, including junior quarterback Josh Kiss, and fi ve on defense. Kiss start-ed nine games a year ago and completed 37 of 72 passes for 589 yards and fi ve touchdowns.

“He has made great, great improve-ment,” Lee said. “He’s gotten a lot stron-ger after putting in a great offseason. He’s become a nice leader. He ran the spread as a freshman and looked good against fresh-man competition. This summer he’s looked tremendous. Big improvement.”

Last year’s leading rusher, Aaron Seymour (248 carries, 1,606 yards, 18 touchdowns) has graduated. Clay will split Seymour’s carries between senior Grant Wend and juniors Nick Steveson and Mason Ensign.

“We’ll be in the spread, so we just use one back,” Lee said. “A lot of times we’ll go with two. Grant and Nick got some work last year; Nick was the backup to Seymour. They have very comparable speed. Nick’s a little more of a power runner. Everybody can catch the ball, but we’ll try to keep Nick in the backfi eld more.”

Several players are in the mix at re-ceiver, where Tyler Mildenberger (12 catch-es, 239 yards, 3 TD) graduated. Those vy-ing for spots are seniors Skylar Musselman, Lorenzo Levally, Steven Nguyen and Eric Kovacs, and juniors Gary Vincent, Tyler Fuller and Jake Lingohr.

Sophomores Dustin Aiton and Jack Winckowski and freshman Jake Novak could also see playing time.

“We’re looking to be deep, and they’re

Clay Eagles (Photo courtesy of Lifetouch)

still fi ghting for spots,” Lee said. “It’s a good battle. I’m expecting others to step up, and a few others are surprising me.”

Lee likes what he’s seen from Musselman and looks forward to seeing what Kovacs can offer. Kovacs was injured all of last season and has been predomi-nantly a defensive player.

“Novak, the freshman, had a great sev-en-on-seven this summer,” Lee said. “He’s starting to learn you’ve got to be more physi-cal. We’ll have to be real careful how we handle him, but he’s a tremendous receiver.”

Three starters on the offensive line – senior right tackle Brock Belinske, se-nior right guard Josh Harrison and senior left guard Aaron Faneuff return. Senior left tackle Dustin Lee and junior center Christian White will fi ll the other two spots. Lee said line play is crucial to the offense’s success.

“Right now, they’re behind schedule,” he said. “If we can’t have protection, we’re not going to be able to throw. Spread of-fenses also have to be able to run the ball.”

Fixing a defense that allowed 39 points a game last year is a top priority. Junior

Michael Wiseman, who had a team-high 72 tackles last year, returns at inside linebacker.

“I like his intensity,” Lee said. “He’s always looking to improve his knowledge of the game.”

Senior Trent Gast moves from end to inside linebacker in Clay’s 3-4 defensive alignment. “Trent put in a great offseason,” Lee said. “He has improved to the point where he’s worthy of moving to that inside linebacker spot.”

Junior Kevin Curry will see time at out-side linebacker, while Kovacs and junior Michael Halka will play inside or outside ‘backer. Wend returns at strong safety and Levally and Nguyen return at cornerback. Musselman is a backup corner, and Lee said freshman Adam Ummel is also getting a look there. Kiss will play free safety, with junior Mason Baker seeing action there.

The all-senior line will consist of nose tackle Alec Kulwicki and ends Sean Pecina and Austin Kochansky. Levi Halka, a ju-nior, will play a backup role.

“These guys are fast and strong,” Lee said. “I’m expecting them to create havoc across the front.”

Coach: Jerry Rutherford, 34th year, 213-132Last year: 9-2 (7-0, NBC)Forecast: The Eagles return their starting quarterback, leading tackler and second-team All-Ohio defensive end Chris Orcutt. The third-leading rusher, senior halfback Eli Brown, returns after rushing for 425 yards and six touchdowns on 62 carries.

“I don’t know if we have that feature guy right now,” Rutherford said. “Eli’s a great blocker, a good receiver and a tough kid. He’s a wrestler and a baseball play-er and he’s not afraid to stick his nose in there. Through summer and two-a-days, he stepped up and started at right halfback.”

This year’s backfi eld includes senior Mitchell Davidson and sophomores Cade

Boos, Cooper Comes and Ian Downard.

“We think we’ve got some depth there,” Rutherford said. “I don’t know which guy will be

the guy, because all three can carry the ball and should be able to do some things for us. The sophomores are coming off a pretty good freshman team.”

Senior Jonathan Bowlus will start again at tight end after leading the team with eight catches for 131 yards and one score a year ago. Orcutt will also play tight end, with juniors Braden Bejarano and Tyler Brenot and sophomore Cory Coffman playing wide receiver.

The entire offensive line graduated. New starters there are junior right tackle Tyler Tudor, junior right guard Austin Meece, senior center Preston Link, soph-omore left guard Dalton Andrews and 320-pound senior left tackle Trevor Schultz.

“A couple of those guys started some games,” Rutherford said. “They’re a group that has pretty good size, and they’re get-ting better every day. Replacing the O-line is an issue for everybody. Our guys have put in their time.”

Orcutt, a 226-pound defensive end, earned All-Ohio honors after racking up 71 tackles including 23 for loss and 11.5 sacks.

“Physically, he’s a big guy and he’s real aggressive,” Rutherford said. “He plays real-ly hard. He wants to play football in college. He uses good leverage and he likes contact.”

The team’s leading tackler, Davidson (104 tackles), also returns on defense along

Eastwood Eagles (Photo courtesy of Lifetouch)

with senior linebacker Andrew Caris, who also returns at quarterback. In fi ve starts un-der center last year, Caris completed 15 of 24 passes for 253 yards and one touchdown.

“Last year (Caris) came out for football and started the fi rst six games at outside line-backer,” Rutherford said. “Then we moved him to quarterback. Obviously he’s a good wrestler, a state qualifi er, and he was a re-gional qualifi er in the pole vault. He’s a good athlete. We weren’t sure a year ago where Davidson was going to play. We had Geiser and some other guys back, but he stepped in at inside linebacker right away. He came in and did a good job. He just took the job.”

Eastwood’s other linebackers are sophomore Jalen Casiano (inside) and se-nior Ben Haas (outside). Orcutt is a fi x-ture at one end position, and the other ends could be senior Zach Thompson or sophomores Hunter Slattman and Antonio Salinas. The tackles include Tudor, Andrews, Meece or junior Michael Burket.Sophomore Cade Boos, who started in the playoff game against Marion Pleasant, re-turns at safety and will again return punts and kickoffs. Brown will start at the other

safety spot, with Jake Pickerel, Alex Ross, Bejarano and Cory Coffman vying for spots at cornerback.

“Four sophomores, a junior and a se-nior will play those three (backfi eld) spots,” Rutherford said. “They’re petty good ath-letes. We’re playing so many sophomores be-cause they’re really good. It’s not that they’re playing because there’s nobody in front of them, it’s because they’re the best guys.”

Senior Lucas McCullough is in his third year as the team’s kicker and will probably punt, too McCullough made four fi eld goals last season.

Coach: Paul Patterson, second year, 8-3Last year: 8-3 (6-1, NBC)Forecast: Every coach must adjust to his personnel, and Paul Patterson is doing just that. The second-year Genoa coach doesn't have a big, bruising back like the Com-ets had in the past in the form of Jake Wojciechowski and David and Kyle Nutter. The wing-T will no longer be the pri-mary offensive formation for the club, but they'll still run the ball, just out of more of a spread formation. "There are some spread concepts, but there are some wing-T concepts. There is some spread and it depends on what

you want to do. If the spread is for chucking the ball around, we’re not that. If you look at Ohio State, they spread you out, but

they run. We’ll put some spread concepts in but we’ll run. You’ll see a lot more shot-gun for us." One downside is their team will have to replace the vast majority of its starters, but Patterson is confident in his players.Another downside is that running back Donte McClure (54 carries for 506 yards, 9.4 per carry, and five touchdowns, plus he had two interceptions on defense) will play at Port Clinton after his family moved there. McClure was an Alan Miller Jewel-ers All-Press honorable mention selection at running back. Among those graduated are All-Press Defensive Player of the Year Blake Traver, a 5-foot-10, 190 pound defensive lineman who did big things for his size, including an area-leading 138 tackles, including 18 tackles for a loss (including quarterback sacks). First team All-Press linebacker Jay Nino, a state champion wrestler who stood 6-1, 235 pounds, graduated after getting 92 tackles, including 16 for a loss. Gone from the offense are running back Jake Wojciechowski, who graduat-ed after running for 2,076 yards on 245 attempts (8.5 per carry) and 29 touch-downs, and quarterback Kyle Edwards, who completed 40 of 85 passes for 649 yards and five touchdowns. Currently, freshmen Zach Grodi and Jake Plantz are battling it out for the quar-

terback position and four players, Dakota Sparks, Damian D'Emilio, Adam Bates and Noah Edwards will all see time at run-ning back. The 6-foot-2, 170 pound Plantz already has good sight over the line and has demonstrated his throwing skills at the junior high level, but that doesn't mean he has the job, Patterson says. "Our regular formation is a two-back, tight end, two-receiver set. You’ll see some two tight set with three backs with some of our personnel. We’ve been in the shotgun for the majority of the time. We also have our under-center packages with some tradi-tional wing-T stuff. It’s about getting good at certain things in each package — not trying to do a million things out of every package. I think they’ve adjusted real well with it." To help protect his new playmakers, Patterson says he has the most experi-enced line he has ever coached in sopho-more Hunter Simmons, senior Joe McClear, senior Dylan Witt, junior Matt Herrick, senior Alex Hodulik, senior Andrew Drum-mond, and senior Ethan Roberts. Patterson is confident that McClear,

Herrick, Drummond and Roberts can hold down the fort on the defensive line, and will need strong play out of Matt Bradfield and Alex Hodulik, who fill in for the duo of Blake Traver and Jay Nino. Last year, Drummond had eight tackles for a loss, and Roberts was a second team All-Press selection — he is the only underclassmen to make the first or second team, joining 13 seniors who are now graduated. "We lost a lot," Patterson said. "I think we lost 11 all-league performers. You look at our offense, we have two offensive line-men back. On defense, we’re returning two linemen and our nickel back. We lost our punter, our kicker. We're replacing a lot. "We will be successful this year if we continue to improve week after week. The work they’ve put in has been awesome. They are inexperienced. We’ll be successful as long as we improve and handle adver-sity. When things are going bad, we're not panicking and trusting each other with what we’re supposed to be doing. The winning mentality that’s been built up at Genoa is not going to change. We’re still trying to physically run the ball and block people."

Coach: Steve Reser, sixth year, 23-27Last year: 9-1 (6-1, TAAC)Forecast: Gibsonburg was the only team in Ohio to fi nish the regular season 9-1 and not qualify for the state playoffs last year. As Reser quickly points out, that was last year, with last year’s players.

“We want to push the limits and see what the 2015 football team can do,” he said, “because 2014 is over.”

The Bears graduated four four-year starters from a team whose only loss in ‘14 came against Northwood, 21-13, in Week 9.

Gibsonburg did not play Toledo Area Athletic Conference champion

Tiffi n Calvert or Toledo Christian last year, but both of those teams are on the Bears’ schedule this season.

“We just have to take care of our business every week,” Reser said. “Last

year we lost nine seniors who were good leaders and good players. We have some holes to fi ll, for sure.”

Perhaps Gibsonburg’s biggest loss was four-year starting quarterback Matt Tille, who threw for 2,168 yards and 28 touch-downs last year while rushing for 1,087 yards and 12 TD. Ryan Clark, a 6-foot, 200-pound junior, will replace Tille in the Bears’ spread offense.

“Ryan is a pretty darn good quarter-back,” Reser said. “He’s a smart kid with good size, and he’s very coachable. He’s not just a thrower and he’s not just a runner. He might be a better runner. We’re very happy with him so far.”

Last year’s second-leading rusher, se-nior Josh Dyer (703 yards, 8 TD) returns and will be joined in the backfi eld by ju-niors Madison Jaso and Alex Richards. Jaso transferred from Lakota last year.

“Madison is a football player who knows how to get after it,” Reser said. “He plays an awesome defensive end. We’re pretty excited he’s on our team. Dyer is a hard-nosed kid. He is a four-year starter at linebacker and he’s gonna get the tough yards. He put on a little bit of weight, and we’re happy about that. Richards has supe-rior vision in the backfi eld.”

Four-year starting receiver Derek Angelone has graduated, but the Bears wel-

come back seniors Erik Jahna (16 catches, 479 yards, 9 TD), Marcus Tille (17, 258, 1) and Griffi n Geary (17, 305, 4) to the receiv-ing corps.

Senior Zack Kaetzel and junior Kane Gomez will also see time there, while se-nior Mateo Flores is getting a look at run-ning back and receiver.

“Marcus Tille will run great routes,” Reser said. “He’s a great possession re-ceiver and does a great job catching the ball. Erik, hopefully, will make the defense put more than one guy over to cover him, and Griffi n plays in the slot for us and re-ally came out of his shell last year. He re-ally understands what we’re trying to do. They’re all great kids who go to practice and work hard.”

The line includes seniors Skyler Shively at right tackle and Billy Ruth at right guard, junior Trent Hovis at left guard and center Ian Taylor, a junior, or sopho-more Alex Dix. Junior Brian Milton, who is still recovering from a shoulder injury he suffered last year, will eventually be in the mix on the line.

“The O-line defi nitely knows where

they’re supposed to go,” Reser said. “They understand the schemes. Now we have to get them to go where they need to go, quicker. This is the seniors’ time to shine.”

Reser also hopes the defense can du-plicate last year’s success, when it gave up less than 17 points a game.

“We have a couple more holes to fi ll on the defensive side than the offensive side,” the coach said. “We will be solid up front. The boys we have in those spots are doing pretty well so far. If they live up to expec-tations, we feel we’re going to be pretty solid.”

The two key losses on defense are linebacker Tyler Hovis and Angelone (nine interceptions) at free safety. Dyer led the team with 86.5 tackles last sea-son from his linebacker spot, where Richards and Milton will also play.Marcus Tille, who had fi ve interceptions a year ago, and Flores both return at corner-back, and Isaak Arriaga will play free safety. The strong safety will be either Geary, Jahna or Kaetzel, with Gomez pushing for time at corner. The D-line will be Jaso, Trent Hovis, Taylor and sophomore Tyler Lilley.

Coach: Mark Emans, 16-5Last year: 8-2 (5-2, NBC)Forecast: In Mark Emans’ fi rst two years at Lake, the Flyers have gone 16-5 while end-ing a 12-year playoff drought and establish-ing themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the Northern Buckeye Conference. However, many of last year's players have graduated, including the school’s re-cord-setting quarterback, Jared Rettig, and his top three receivers from last season, Connor Bowen, Todd Walters, Zak Green-lese. Replacing Rettig is his younger broth-er, Jacob, who will be joined in the back-fi eld by a talented running back in Bran-

den Short. Nick DeLauter will be the wingback in the wing-T set, Brandon Knieriem will see his share of carries and Adam Duncan and Drayton Wil-liams will serve as the

wide receiver and tight end, respectively. Emans, a standout linebacker at East-wood and Bowling Green State University who won a state championship as a high school coach at Wauseon in 1993 and was named Division IV Co-Coach of the Year at Lake two years ago, says Jacob has his work cut out for him in trying to fi ll in for his brother, who is now playing NCAA Divi-sion II football at the University of Findlay. “Jake is really, really progressing phys-ically and the maturation process of play-ing the position way beyond my expecta-tions,” Emans said. “He’s done everything I’ve asked of him — he comes to work with a great attitude. He’s a great teammate. Whether it’s throwing 30 touchdowns or three touchdowns, he’s into it for the team. In our two scrimmages, he’s done a nice job and made some nice plays. The key for Jake is to be himself.” Last year, Jacob completed 51 percent of his passes (23 for 45) for 338 yards and fi ve touchdowns. He found himself start-ing on a couple occasions when his older brother suffered a shoulder injury, getting a taste of varsity action under his brother's tutelage. The key test was against East-wood, in which he fi lled in, but the Eagles prevailed on their way to an NBC title. DeLauter, a fi rst team Alan Miller Jew-elers All-Press tight end, caught nine passes

Lake Flyers (Photo courtesy of Innovations Portrait Studio)

for 223 yards (24.8) and two touchdowns. Duncan caught fi ve passes for 102 yards (20.4) and one touchdown, plus he did the place kicking, kicking 47 extra points con-versions and with his three TDs, scored 65 points, earning him second team All-Press. Emans is also expecting big things out of Short, who rushed for over 1,156 yards and averaged nearly double digits on his average carry (9.6), scoring 21 touchdowns. He also caught 10 passes for 126 yards and fi ve TDs. His 156 points put him second in scoring in the Eastern Maumee Bay re-gion only behind Genoa running back Jake Wojciechowski (180 points). “Brandon is going to have a very nice year,” Emans said. “He’s our horse.” The line, which includes Williams at tight end, features two returners in Jim Urias and Chris Strock and three newcom-ers in Matt Szymanski, Randy Zam and Aaron Szegedi. They key for the defense is maintain-ing their physicality, something Emans has tried to instill within his program since tak-ing over. “I think that they have really pro-

gressed since we started two-a-days and in our two scrimmages in becoming physical. Before I got here, I wouldn’t say Lake was known for their physicality. We wanted to bring that back,” he said. “That’s not being dirty or taking cheap shots, that’s just play-ing tough. Our coaches do an outstanding job of getting them ready. I don’t do any-thing with the defense, I just let them go.” DeLauter returns to head up the de-fense after getting 90 tackles last year, sec-ond on the team behind the graduated Aus-tin Ruess (111 tackles, including 14 for a loss). Short had 61 tackles, Rettig had eight tackles for a loss (including quarterback sacks) and Greenlese had two interceptions last year. While the team is talented, there are questions about its depth. “We’re going to have a lot of guys going both ways. Our Achilles’ heel might be our depth,” Emans said. “We don’t have a lot of second line guys that have played a lot of varsity. We have about 50 on our roster, but we don’t have a lot that have had Friday night experience. That’s our job to get them ready.”

Coach: Ken James, 30th year, 166-133Last year: 6-4 (5-2 TAAC)Forecast: Ken James is the fi rst to admit that the Rangers have come to expect eight-, nine- and 10-win seasons. Conference championships and an occasional playoff berth usually follow.

Not last year. Northwood was ham-pered by an early-season injury to its best player, running back Dominik Bermejo, and fi elded a young team in general en route to fi nishing 6-4.

“We were pretty grumpy last winter, the players and coaches,” said James.

Bermejo (619 yards, 7 TD) returned in the second half of the season and

Northwood won their last fi ve games. James said the team had a good offseason and is prepared to turn things around in 2015.

“Our seniors did a phe-nomenal job in buying what we’re trying to do,” James

said. “We tried to squeeze some more work out of them in the offseason. We had to kick a lot of guys out of the weight room. They bought into the work ethic and mak-ing themselves better. We feel physically more prepared to handle the schedule we had last year.”

The Rangers return fi ve starters on de-fense and nine on offense, including senior quarterback Mike Vallejo, who threw for 840 yards and eight touchdowns last sea-son completing 47 percent of his passes. James said Vallejo, a three-year starter, will play almost exclusively out of the shotgun.

“We feel like he functions a little better there,” James said. “He’s not real tall and he can see things faster out of the shotgun. We don’t have lot of tall targets. It’s not like we have a lot of 6-2 guys to throw to. Last year we didn’t run the ball well, so we were in third-and-9, third-and-10. We have to run the ball better to give Vallejo an opportu-nity to throw the ball when teams aren’t expecting him to throw.”

The Rangers fi gure to have fi ve play-ers rotate in and out at the running back position, including seniors Joey Woody, Jonny Wheeler and Scott Slater, and juniors Trevor Mack and Gavin Fritz.

“When we’re good, it’s usually run-ning back by committee,” James said. “We

Vallejo leads team determined to get trophy back

didn’t have anybody established last year when Dominik went down. By the end of the year, Jonny got himself ready to play. Woody had to get better at blocking and similar things early in the year. Those guys all got experience and that made us better at the end of the year.”

Top receivers are seniors Jacob Vickers and Sean Whitmore, and junior Brandon Lampros, who did not play last season.

“Sean and Vickers are like the of-fensive line guys,” James said. “They are bigger, faster and they’ve worked hard at catching the ball. We feel we need to get some plays out of them, which will help us run the ball more effectively.”

The line consists of returning start-ers Ben Goins (center), Troy Schmitz (right guard) and tackles Nick Bonnette and Christian Vickers. Others rotating in are Zac Heuser, Lukas Cousino and Jacob Shephard, who started a few games a year ago.

Bonnette returns at defensive end along with Will Peart. Tyler Arman, who lettered last year, is the likely starter at nose guard. Anthony Arzuaga, a 279-pound junior, will play nose guard and end, and Tim Romstadt

will also see time at the end position.“Arman is very quick, and Arzuaga is a

little bigger this year,” James said. “He’s got some size and had a good camp. Bonnette and Peart are proven commodities and are good football players. We feel we’re a little better on the line because we have some good depth there.”

The inside linebackers are Mack, Wheeler and sophomore Jason Lord. Mack, a fi rst-team All-Toledo Area Athletic Conference selection, tied a school record in initial hits last season.

“He played at 160 pounds last year, and this year he’s around 180,” James said. “He’s a heck of a leader. You just tell him to get something done and you don’t have to worry about it.”

The starting outside linebackers could be either Christian Vickers, Collin Gutekunst, Austin Weatherholt, Mike Lopinski or Andrew Claus, who could play strong safety. Fritz is the only returning starter in the defensive backfi eld. Dillan Cathers can play both safety positions, and the corners will be Woody, Scott Slater, Tyler Baer or Lampros.

Coach: Mike May, eighth year, 34-36 Last Year: 3-7 (2-5, SBC) Forecast: Mike May returns for his eighth season at the helm of the storied Oak Harbor Rockets football program, as he looks to im-prove on his team’s lukewarm 3-7 overall fi nish, and its 2-5 mark in Sandusky Bay Conference play one year ago.

Still, in order to do that, and hopefully make some noise in a tough Sandusky Bay Conference that trots out the likes of such perennial contenders as Huron, Perkins, and Clyde, and an emerging Port Clinton Redskins squad every Friday night...Coach May and company will have to try to ac-complish their mission without the ser-

vices of some key starters, who were claimed by grad-uation.

One such loss? Last year’s fi rst-year starting quarterback Andre Ramsey, who didn’t exactly shatter

any Oak Harbor records with a fi nal stat line that read 74-of-151, for a 49 percent completion rate, and six touchdown toss-es to go along with 752 yards through the air...but who nonetheless served as a very steady, reliable, and athletic fi eld general, who his Rocket teammates always respond-ed to.

This fall, look for May to plug in yet another fi rst-year starter at the crucial QB position in junior Jeff Winterfi eld, who will have some big shoes to fi ll if he hopes to lead the Rockets’ potentially-explosive of-fense as capably as Ramsey did in 2014.

Meanwhile, not making this ongoing quarterback transition any easier for these Rockets will be Winterfi eld’s veteran fi rst line of defense, or lack thereof rather...as Oak Harbor returns without four of its fi ve starting offensive linemen from last year, including Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press honorable mention center Ben Bergman, and fellow awardees T.J. Lawrence and Vince Szabo — with only Brandon Garber serving as the lone stalwart on the OL from last fall.

On the fl ip side, OH looks to be deep at the running back position, boasting a three-pronged attack that includes starting ball carriers Andrew Heberling, Noah Harder, and Jaret Parker, with a brace of athletes in Caleb Oberther, Kalob Vargas, and Dillon

Oak Harbor Rockets (Photo courtesy of Lifetouch)

Mansor lining up to add depth and get touches.

Of the six, Heberling is a known com-modity, as in 2014, he toted the rock for 618 yards on 122 attempts for a solid 5.1-yard average and seven scores, and he has all of the physical tools to give opposing de-fenses fi ts every Friday night. All he’ll have to do is regain last fall’s form in 2015 and make consistent, smart plays with his legs, plus count on his retooling offensive line.

The Rockets may have to experiment with some different, able bodies to fi ll the holes and act as stopgaps on the defensive line this year. The only returnee on that all-important unit in ‘15 will once again be Garber, though this two-way starter should get plenty of help stuffi ng the run from fellow defensive leaders Noah Harder, a six foot tall, 210 pound middle lineback-er whose play garnered him second team All-Press defensive recognition last year. Harder notched 57 tackles, with nine of them going for losses. Free safety Rhett Petersen also returns to anchor May’s 4-4 defense.

“We need to develop depth on the of-

fensive and defensive lines,” said May, whose scrappy Rocket team returns 14 let-termen from last year, but only three start-ers on both sides of the ball, “but our team chemistry, and our senior leadership are both strengths.”

Another element going Oak Harbor's way is a health roster size, which includes nearly 70 coming out to play football this season. In high school football, good roster numbers mean depth, plus they will assist May in supporting the wing-T offense he brought over eight years ago from a prior as-sistant coaching stint at St. Marys Memorial.

Coach: Dan Chipka, second year, 5-5Last year: 5-5 (4-1, TCL)Forecast: The Indians graduated their top two rushers from the running back posi-tion, Nate Houle (651 yards, 8 TD) and Jermaine Brown (448 yards, 3 TD).

The new quarterback is junior left-hander Ronnie Sanders. This year’s starting tailback will be senior Anthony Ashford (6-1, 210), who played tight end (13 catches, 226 yards, 4 TD) and outside linebacker last year. Ashford was a fi rst-team All-CL linebacker as a sophomore and junior.

“He ran the ball some last year,” Chipka said. “He got quite a few practice reps. He’s our alpha male. He’s the real deal. He’s got strength and power and we’re excited to

see him run.”Also in the backfi eld

will be senior fi rst-year player Mike Hernandez.

“He will give us what Jermaine gave us,” Chipka said. “He’s an incredibly

physical runner who keeps his feet moving and falls forward. He’s done a great job so far and has a great attitude.”

Waite’s top pass catcher last season, senior slot receiver Kelvin Downer, returns after catching 11 passes for 277 yards (25.2 average) and two touchdowns in 2014.

“He’s electric,” Chipka said. “We’ve got a number of plays to get him the foot-ball out in space. He’s done very well in the seven-on-sevens. He made about three or four kids miss in our scrimmage against Evergreen. He’s pretty gifted. We’re excited to see what he can do for us.”

Other top playmakers could be junior Anthony Huff and Jamel Blanks.

“Anthony has a lot of speed on the edges,” Chipka said. “One of our most im-proved players has been Jamel. We’ve got him slotted to start the season and he’s done a great job in the preseason in seven-on-sevens and throughout camp.”

The offensive line is anchored by two returning starters, junior left tackle Dakota Stevenson and senior right guard Noah Paprocki. The other starters will be senior left guard Jesus Benavidez, junior center Randy Planck and junior right tackle Mark Boone (6-6, 285).

“The strength of our team may be the offensive line and our ability to run the

Waite Indians (Photo courtesy of Innovations Portrait Studio)

ball,” Chipka said. “They’re a hard-work-ing group and they have a tremendous at-titude. They come to work every day.”

Defensively, last year’s leading tackler, Houle (107 stops, 19.5 tackles for loss) has graduated along with Jovan Sanson (53, 19.5 TFL), but sophomore end Taevion Cummings returns. Cummings had 56 tackles as a freshman. “He’s growing, get-ting faster, just developing,” Chipka said. “We’ve been pleased that he is having a good (preseason) camp. If we can get ahead late in games and make our opponents start passing, he can get after the quarterback.”

Ashford and Downer will both play a hybrid linebacker/end/safety role on defense, depending on Waite’s defensive coverage. Boone will start at defensive end, while Hernandez and senior Eduardo Jackson, who also played tight end last year, return at linebacker.

“Jackson’s got a motor,” Chipka said. “He’ll do whatever we ask of him.”

The secondary returns second team all-league cornerback M.C. Harris, who will play opposite Sanders at the other corner.

“I think Harris plays with a chip on his

shoulder,” Chipka said. “He’s somewhat un-dersized (5-9, 160) but he’s got a mean streak in him. He plays great in press coverage.”

Huff will start at free safety, with senior Dajahn Baker at strong safety and receiver.

“I’ve been preaching attitude, effort and enthusiasm since I’ve been here,” Chipka said. “Those are the pillars of our program. This group has really taken it and run with it. I’m very pleased with our mindsets, attitude and approach to the pro-gram. How we overcome adverse situations this season will determine the amount of success we have this year.”

Coach: Brian Spicer, second year, 0-10Last Year: 0-10 (0-7, NBC) Forecast: For second-year head coach Brian Spicer and his Woodmore Wildcats football program, there absolutely can be nowhere to go but up in 2015 after the then brand-new pairing fi nished a disappointing 0-10, and 0-7 overall and in Northern Buckeye Conference play in 2014. That’s the good news, Wildcats fans. The tough, somewhat disconcerting re-ality? Coach Spicer and the ‘Cats undoubt-edly will have to rely on a heavy dose of green, as-of-yet unproven freshmen to man some key spots if the once-proud program is to start reversing its fortunes this fall.

“We will need to work on getting our young players to contribute on Friday nights,” offered Spicer, of his team that only returns 11 previous letter winners, among them only eight holdover

starters, and those are our concerns. We’ll be playing several freshmen, and we have a lack of depth.” The reason — there are only 28 play-ers on the roster, including eight freshmen, fi ve sophomores, eight juniors and seven seniors, which means many will have to play on both sides of the ball. The ‘Cats’ strengths that Spicer and staff are excited about? Among that small crop of stud veterans who are coming back are several of Woodmore’s light-up-the-scoreboard, scratch-their-names-in-the-record-books “skills” guys...which means the Wildcat spread offense has all the better chance of being even more explosive this year, seeing as how it’s going to be manned by talented, athletic personnel with years of experience playing together under their belts. Like 6-foot-1, 195 pound senior quar-terback extraordinaire Connor Bringman...whose rifl e arm shot him straight to the top of the NBC passing board in 2014 on the strength of a school-record 2,224 yards and 16 touchdown passes, while going 170 of 349, all of which earned the QB not only Alan Miller Jeweler All-Press honorable mention honors, but also saw him tabbed second team All-NBC. Bringman also ran for 240 yards on 97 carries and eight touch-

downs. Then there’s Bringman’s top target, 5-7, 150 pound sparkplug J.T. Atkin, a ju-nior split end who snared 65 passes for 928 yards and a sweet 14.3-yards per catch av-erage, to go along with eight touchdowns. Also a school-record setter who earned himself fi rst team All-Press and second team All-NBC accolades for his work in the ‘Cats’ high-octane offense as a sophomore. He was Woodmore's only selection to the Alan Miller's All-Press fi rst or second team, offense or defense. Atkin will look to pair with fellow junior wide receiver D.J. Wellens to give Woodmore one of the most formidable passing games in all the NBC. Bringman will miss one of his leading receivers from last year, the graduated Todd Williams (38 catches for 426 yards, 11.2 per catch, and one TD), but there is a new Williams on the team in 5-10, 215 pound senior two-way lineman Dillon Williams, who plays guard. If there’s to be a chink in the pass-ing game’s armor, it could end up being Bringman’s all-important protection. Even

the best require time to scan the fi eld and throw and Bringman may be operating behind an offensive line that may have to plug in unproven players. The ‘Cats lost three of fi ve starters on the line after last season. However, the younger guys could learn from that unit’s two veterans — 6-3, 260 pound senior center Colin Sandrock and Williams — a pair of NBC standouts at their respective positions who bring a combined fi ve years of experience at O-line play to the table. Defensively, Woodmore will be led by a strong linebacking corps, which in turn has a reputation for churning out dynamic playmakers. That includes Conner Haas, a 6-2, 200 pound junior; 6-1, 200 pound se-nior Dustin Haar (65 tackles last year); and 5-9, 150 pound junior linebacker Brandon Cowell (40 tackles, inclulding 4½ for a loss), all of whom have nice motors and are very active on the football fi eld. Senior corner Ross Weirich and junior free safety Derek Wank will look to help shore up the secondary and lead a defense that gave up 397 points last year, 223 more points than the Wildcat offense scored.
