Does God Want You To Become a Saint?
The word “saint” has many different meanings to different people. To some, “saint” means a nearly perfect person – a “Mother Theresa” type who obviously gave his/her life sacrificially to God’s work. For the Catholic Church, a “saint” is one who has died and fits a list of specific criteria, including be-ing the means of a bona fide miracle.
Dr. Maxie Dunham says in the Disciple Bible Study curriculum that the saint is, “… one in whom Christ is seen to live again.” It’s that simple. No, saints aren’t necessarily perfect or miracle workers. They are simply faithful Christians who are willing for Christ to be seen again in their everyday lives.
Paul, in his letters to the early church congregations, often addresses his letters “to the saints.”
“To all God’s beloved in Rome who are called to be saints …” (Romans 1:7)
“To the church of God that is in Corinth … called to be saints … “ (I Corinthians 1:2)
“To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi … “ (Philippians 1:1)
It’s obvious that Paul regards “saint” as synonymous with “Christian” or “church member.” Every-body in those churches were called “saints,” whether he knew all of them or not (he didn’t in Rome), whether he agreed with them or not (he didn’t in Corinth), whether he liked them or not (he did in Philippi). All of them were called “saints.”
The Greek word Paul used was “hagion” or “holy one.” A saint was a person called by God to be holy, to be set apart, to stand out from the crowd, to stand up and be counted. A saint was called to be on a journey of life different from the rest of society. A saint was listening to God’s calling on his/her life and was following obediently to the best of his/her ability.
In short, for Paul, a saint is someone who is called by God to be different. And the primary standard was whether they were called, not if they were perfectly obedient in the call! The measure was, “Are they trying or have they given up?”
Let me ask you as you sit and read this article, do you believe that God is calling you to be a special person for Jesus? Do you believe that God needs you to serve in a way that is unlike anyone else be-cause of your unique abilities and strengths? I believe God needs saints everywhere today – in the home, in the marketplace, in the school, in government institutions – everywhere. Why? Because God needs people willing to be different from the crowd, if necessary – for Christ. God needs people “. . . in whom Christ is seen to live again,” as Maxie Dunham put it.
Our world is pitifully confused, self-destructive, mean-spirited. Our world (God’s world) is full of people who need Christ and need someone “in whom Christ is seen to live again.” Would you be will-ing to be a saint? Someone is looking to you for an answer!

In UMW news...
The United Methodist Women Christmas quilt was won by Nanette Waller, who re-tired this year from the VA Hospital in Muskogee. The quilt provided $283.00 toward our new video equipment.
The UMW's *next project* is our annual theme basket silent auction. These bas-kets will be dis-played each Sunday for the congregation to place their bids. They would each make a great Christmas present!

Servant Opportunities
Greeters for 2015
There are always opportunities for service within our church. We would love to have new, fresh fac-es join hands with those with ex-perience in areas of service.
We are needing greeters for our 10:30 worship service during 2015. Greeters are asked to ar-rive 15 minutes before worship, and welcome those coming in to worship. It is also a great way to help a visitor or new guest, as well as say hello to our “regulars.” The more volunteers we have, the fewer times each person/couple has to serve during the year.
f you are excited to spread God’s
word and show His love, please call the church office and discuss areas where your light might shine the brightest. 918-396-2519
