All Saints Sunday – November 6, 2016

Sunday, November 6, 2016, we will celebrate All Saints Sunday, remembering all of those of our congregation who have died since last All Saints Day. In our morning worship service, we will call the names of those who have been received into God's Heaven, we will light a candle in their memory, and we will chime a bell. This time of remembrance will be part of our worship experience including receiving the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Come and worship with us on All Saints Sunday, and every Sunday, indeed, For All the Saints! Our Honored Dead:

John Wesley’s Words Concerning Voting —October 6, 1774

John Wesley’s words concerning voting still hold true today…consider these as you make preparations to vote and as you cast your vote! “I met those of our society who had votes in the ensuing election, and advised them:

1. To vote, without fee or reward, for the person they judged most worthy.

2. To speak no evil of the person they voted against. And 3. To take care their spirits were not sharpened against those that voted on the other side.”

Charge Conference 2016 Charge Conference 2016 for Columbia First United Methodist Church will be held on Thursday, December 1, 2016, from 6:30-7:30 P.M. in the Wesley Center. This date and time is confirmed with the Brookhaven District Office, which is a change from the previously mentioned date and time. Rev. Heather Hensarling, our Brookhaven District Superintendent, will guide us through this time of celebrating our missions and ministries which will give foundation for our 2017 ministries and missions. Our time of reflecting and visioning will put in context how we aspire to go deeper in our relationship with God and reach further in our love and service with our neighbors. Members of the Administrative Board are urged to be present, and all members and friends of First Church are invited to attend and share in this experience of Loving, Learning and Leading through the gift we call First United Methodist Church! Charge Conference 2016, Thursday, December 1, 2016, from 6:30-7:30 P.M. in the Wesley Center.

Our youth groups have just enjoyed two of our favorite annual events- The Franklinton Fair trips and our outdoor Halloween party at the Howells’ home. Thank you to Blair Powers and Simon Herring for driving us to the fair and to all the chaperones who made the junior high trip possible. We had a group of 34 travel with the junior high group, and this was our first time to let that age group venture out on their own in groups. As you can imagine, that transition causes a bit of anxiety for the adults; but thankfully, we all found each other at the Directed times and place.

The Halloween party was another great one for the books. This year, we added a pumpkin painting station, and the creativity abounded. We also had a creepy surprise for the kids during the hayride thanks to Jourdan Bullock and Sara Russell and their willingness to help….though Jourdan MIGHT be hesitant to ask what she can do for future events! Jourdan graciously agreed to dress in full clown makeup and wait along the wood’s edge to wave at our kids as the trailer passed. Clowns have been a much discussed topic with our youth groups this year thanks to the national sightings, so we knew we needed a friendly clown to spice up our hayride this year. After a few screams and MUCH laughter, all the youth agreed Mrs. Jourdan was a REALLY good sport to do that….and Mrs. Sara is to be credited, as well, as they both had to sit in the dark woods for almost an hour for both groups to cycle through!! Now THAT is a heart to serve!!

And we certainly can’t go without thanking the Howells for hosting us again. Most of the youth agree that the Howells built their house JUST for the purpose of hosting this event. It is a perfect location, and we so appreciate their hospitality year after year in having us over for this fun event. I’m not sure how we will ever top our hayride surprise, but we will brainstorm all year long for next year’s!

Variety show practice resumes this Sunday for the junior high. We will meet at 4:30 this week and cycle through various acts. Youth interested in singing with the adult choir for the Christmas program can watch for details soon on practice times.

Junior high will continue their Drama series, and senior high will begin Generation Change this week. Another favorite annual event has been added to the calendar, as well. The youth groups and families will travel to Improve Baptist Church’s Scenes of Christ Sunday, December 4th. Details to come. See important dates below, and add them to your holiday calendars to ensure you don’t miss out!

Congratulations and good luck to Spencer Stovall and Porter Price as they enter the playoffs this week against Indianola with the CA Cougar football team! We are pulling for you! And congratulations to Maggie Herring and Jack Deal as they wrapped up their Marching Wildcat run with a 3rd place ranking in the state championship this past weekend. Carson is ready to continue the tradition as you guys make your exit! What fun it has been to watch you guys!

Have a great week! Mrs. Angel

As usual our trunk or treat night was so much fun! Thank to to all who participated by bringing and inviting families, donating goodies for the cake walk and for setting up

your cars to pass out candy! This year, we gave a prize to the best decorated car, our anonymous judge voted the Dantin-Ford Bible class as the winners! A special thanks to the ladies of the class for going above and beyond! We can't wait to see what everyone does next year!

If you were not in church Sunday, didn't hear us on the radio, or didn't catch the service on live stream, go to the church's Facebook page to find the children's performance of "Agnus Dei". It was, once again, wonderful! I am so thankful for those that

give of their time to teach our kids.

We are still taking donations of mini American flags. We will use them to place on graves of veterans in the city cemetery on November 9th. If you would like to donate, you can leave them in the office during office hours or give them to me on Wednesday afternoons.

Don't forget that those who wish to participate during the White Christmas service will meet to practice with Mr. Billy on Wednesday nights from 6-6:30 in the choir room. Parents, this is totally optional but I would love to see a room full each week!
