It’s the beginning of a new year already! I’m not sure I’m finished with the last one yet! But it’s true. The new year of 2017 is beginning whether we like it or not. A new milestone. A new and fresh start.

What do we do to start the new year right? There are lots of ways to get started that have been familiar to all of us. Set up a series of resolutions? Make plans for doing things a new way? Put away all the decorations and throw out the old Christmas tree? Or just count it as another day in the long series of bleak winter days? Whatever your tradition is, let’s look at something different to put on our “to-do” list – rest a bit, reflect, celebrate, and regain perspective.

Often we get so busy that we forget to step back, rest, and take stock of where we want to go next. A friend of mine, Rebekah Simon-Peter suggested that we actually need to stop long enough to reflect and celebrate where we’ve been and what we’ve already done, both individually and as a congregation of believers. Without checking the path we’ve traveled, we don’t really know our new starting point for the year. And without knowing where we begin, it’s much more difficult to know where we’re going, or even if we’re on the right pathway.

This is the one time each year that we are challenged to question our direction, and to make whatever changes or course adjustments that are necessary.

So as we start the new year, let us take time to prayerfully reflect on what we’ve done and where we’ve been in our lives and in our church. Let’s take a good look at where we want to go and what God wants us to do, and keeping that in mind, make our resolutions for the year, or the month, or the week, or even each day.

Let us all make the most of this opportunity to serve our God, our nation, our community, our church, and our families. Let’s open ourselves to God’s leading, without setting limits on God or ourselves.

Let us pray: “Dear God, we ask you to break through in our lives and in the life of our church, without limits, to do the great things you have in store for us and for this community! Amen.”

Word of the month: “Light“

Seeking the Best: I believe that appreciation is a holy thing — that when we look for what’s best

in a person we happen to be with at the moment, we’re doing what God does all the time.

So in loving and appreciating our neighbor, we’re participating in something sacred. — Fred Rogers

During December the children and youth have been working on the Christmas Program. We have been reading through the parts during the first part of the Sunday School hour. On December 11th, we ran through the program during Sunday School and before going to the Chrisman’s for the December youth meeting. The program is called “The New Star”. This presents the Christmas story from the perspective of the 2 new Christmas stars. It was scheduled to be presented on December 18th, but the weather did not cooperate. So, the youngsters will now be presented during both services on Sunday, January 8th.

On December 11th, the youth and children participated in the “Bible Bucks” redemption. They were able to shop with the “Bible Bucks” that they had earned through participation in Church services and other activities. This year in addition to saving 10% and tithing 10%, the kids had to purchase one gift for someone else. They had a great time picking out their gifts and presenting them to brothers, sisters, parents and teachers.

In the evening of December 11th the youth met at the Chrisman’s home for their Christmas meeting. They brought items for their adopted soldier. We wrapped and packed these gifts so they could be sent off.

The youth are preparing for the WOW conference that is to be held on January 21st and 22nd.

Summer 2017 Mission Opportunity to Nicaragua

A message from Cleo Kottwitz:

Friends and partners in ministry,

I’m forwarding an announcement of an upcoming mission trip to work with Rainbow Network in Nicaragua. As a new member of the

Rainbow Board of Directors, I am seeking to enlist mid-state participation. I have talked with Scott Burdin, and he is inviting anyone

who is interested to join in a planning session at Macon UMC, Jan. 8, 3:30pm. I plan to attend. It will be a good opportunity to get

more information. Would you - or someone you know (friend, family or church member …) like to go along? For more info about

Rainbow, go to www.rainbownetwork.org.

Peace,

Cleo Kottwitz

Are you or your church looking for a mission opportunity next summer? Look no further. Macon UMC will be taking a mission team to Nicaragua July 30 – August 5 to work with Rainbow Network and we would love for you to join us. We will have a team working construction on a housing project during the morning and then visiting the various aspects of Rainbow Network during the afternoon.

We will also have a medical team working alongside Nicaraguan physicians in rural communities. We will observe a micro loan ceremony, see schools, community buildings and feeding centers, meet sponsored students, fellowship with each other, enjoy daily devotion time and much more.

If you feel led to be a part of this great experience, contact Scott Burdin at [email protected] or 660-676-3454. The total cost of the trip is approximately $1,500 per person. Macon UMC is asking that each participant pay $400 and help us fundraise the remainder.

Taking a Stand Cowardice asks the question: Is it safe? Expediency asks the question: Is it politic? Vanity asks the question: Is it popular? But conscience asks the question: Is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular — but one must take it simply because it is right.
