6. Project Setting 6.1 Consent The researcher will supply recruitment materials, consent forms and information forms to
Since the fluent speakers of are not literate in English, will explain the content of recruitment materials, consent forms, information forms to the fluent speakers, and provide them with opportunities to discuss these materials and develop any further questions relating to the materials. If potential participants decide to participate, this will be conveyed to the research team via 6.2 Participant information All participants will be offered the options of acknowledgement or anonymity. The archiving systems used in the project, such as ELAN, allow for identifying information to be added or removed as required. In all previous research with the community, all participants have required that their contributions be acknowledged by name in recognition of their contributions to the community ongoing language and cultural programs. If participants choose to provide personal information, then this will appear as an acknowledgement in project outputs including publications. 6.3 Review of Responses Participants will have the opportunity to review, edit or delete their responses that have been recorded prior to data analysis and publication. The response will then be edited or deleted from the recorder. 6.4 Research Activities The researcher will be in for about two or three weeks to ensure sufficient data collection. During this time, he will meet the participants, which have been recruited by
A standard recording session takes about one hour, which includes a short break every 10 minutes. The researcher will carry out elicitation by using video stimuli. These videos are short animations and everyday activities. The video will be played twice, then the researcher asks the participant to explain the activities in the video in their language. The audio of this face-to-face session is recorded. 6.5 Data Collection, Management and Dissemination The researcher is interested in linguistic and cultural data. The data is collected by audio recording. In rare cases, video recording may also be used. In all previous research, the community has required that all data should be archived institutionally. We will store and archive the data with the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies [AIATSIS] archive, which stores and archives any relevant information, including linguistic material, that is concerned with Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders.

and will:
• Interview people one by one using questionnaires either by using simple yes/no questions or by asking ‘How do you say this in your language?’
• Show the people short animated videos on the laptop and ask them how they would express these events in the language.
• Record what they say on sound and/or video and transcribe the recordings.
• Take notes. The research will happen at different periods between .
3. Participation is voluntary You do not have to participate in this research project. Participation is voluntary and it is entirely your decision. If you don’t like any of the questions that or ask you, then you don’t have to answer them.
and will not write anything down unless you agree that they can. and will turn off the tape if you ask them to.
4. What will the researchers do with the information they collect? During the project, recordings, interview transcripts, and field notes will be digitally stored on the researchers’ private computers and backed up on portable hard drives. A hardcopy of field notes will be retained in the researchers’ field notebooks. Only the researchers and supervisors will have direct access to this information. The information will be used to write a thesis at the University of Newcastle. It will also be used to write other kinds of academic research.
• and won’t include personal or culturally restricted information without your consent.
• It is possible that academic journal articles may be produced quoting some of the sentences you have said. If you would prefer to remain anonymous, then we will not quote your name. Participants will be informed of the progress of the project and any publications will be discussed with participants before being finalized.
5. Giving material to AIATSIS If you agree, we propose to give all of the notes and tapes to the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies [AIATSIS] for safekeeping. Please note that:
• If we give personal information which identifies you to AIATSIS, the Privacy Act 1989 (Cth) says that other people can only have access to it if you agree that they can. We will talk to you about who should be allowed to have access to this information, and how AIATSIS should look after it.
