"A BUNCH OF SHARKS"Recently, my friend who is a partner at a majorlaw firm referred to her partners as a "bunch of
sharks".
Even very verbally skilled people tend to revert to clichesand mundane speech. At best, this metaphor is a clicheand while it gets the point across, it is only an okay
metaphor.
STEP 1MAKE THE METAPHOR MORE VIVIDDon't be lazy. Most people put littlethought into the metaphors they employ. As a first step, just make the metaphormore vivid and detailed!
MAKE IT EVEN MORE VIVIDThe next step towards metaphorgreatness is to take what you’ve got andmake it EVEN MORE vivid and potentiallyexaggerated.
PUT THE METAPHOR INTO "ACTION"As a final step, instead of phrasing themetaphor as a static thing, restructurethe metaphor by making it ACTIVE. Inother words, add action to the metaphor.

STEP 3
STEP 1MAKE THE METAPHOR MORE VIVIDInstead of “My law firm is full of sharks“,turn it into “My law firm is a cesspool ofsharks“. This is better, but still only okay.
MAKE IT EVEN MORE VIVIDInstead of “My law firm is a cesspool ofsharks“, turn it into “My law firm is acesspool of sharks walking upright, wearing suits, and carrying briefcases.”Much better, but don't stop here.
PUT THE METAPHOR INTO "ACTION"“Everyday at the law firm, I feel like a surferbeing lowered into a cesspool of sharks whohaven’t eaten in days, except instead ofeating me, they eat my profits, my dignity, and suck my soul.”
