As I draft my last “Superintendent’s Segment” for the school year, I need to begin by sharing my most sincere appreciation to many groups of people. As always, my first note of appreciation goes to the MGS teachers who continue to work so hard for the benefit of our kids. Other groups to thank include aides, bus drivers, kitchen/cafeteria employees, our secretaries, custodians, bookkeeper, and technology director. Our PTO, Education Foundation, as well as the Athletic and Music Boosters are in need of thanks for the many things they do for the students. I also want to thank the administrative team, Mrs. Costello and Mr. Damery, and the members of the Board of Education. I realize that in an effort to thank different groups of people, I’m going to forget

some that are truly deserving of thanks and appreciation. If I have missed key groups of people, I offer a sin-cere apology. For all of our many volunteers, thank you for being a crucial part of another successful school year.

Latchkey: If you are interested in your child attending latchkey next school year, please re-member that you must renew your registration information (Please do not assume you are on the Latchkey list due to the fact that you attended the previous school year.) Remember to sign up for the 2018-2019 school year and sign up before the first day of school so we have an accurate count so the teachers are able to get your child to latchkey.

6th/7th Grade Parents: 8th grade graduation reception Traditionally, parents of 7th graders have helped to plan, set up, and decorate at the 8th grade graduation

party/dance and the eighth grade graduation reception. If you are interested in helping out, please call Mrs.

Costello 367-2361 or Mrs. Michele Lelm [email protected] . Let us know of your interest. We can tell you

about the process. Even if you just have some ideas, that’s help enough.

The Metamora Grade School community has been so generous in donating school supplies to our school! MGS understands that those times are tough for many families. Over the summer, as you begin thinking of buying school supplies and you are one of the families that could use some help, please contact the school at 367-2361 or email Mrs. Costello at: [email protected]. Just mention that you need school supplies and we will arrange to make that happen!

It is hard to believe that it is May and the 2017-18 school year will soon be ending.

The month of May will be filled with various exciting activities as field trips; Fun Day, concerts, Spring Fine Art Festival and some of the dates for the K-8 students are highlighted listed below:

Please continue to take the summer to keep your child busy and involved in their education. Sign them up for summer reading programs and other camps that are available. It’s not just about activity as much as it is about thinking and using their skills. So many academic skills can be lost over the summer. MGS teachers and I en-courage parents to seek out educational opportunities that are available in the area. To get specific ideas of where to look, contact your child’s teacher.

A few summer jokes found below, but a big wish for a great summer!!!!!!

Sylvia: “Dad, can you write in the dark?

Dad: “I think so. What do you want me to write?”

Sylvia: “Your name on this report card.”

Teacher: “John, why are you doing your math multi-plication on the floor?”

John: “You told me to do it without using tables.”

Question: Why was the math book sad?

Answer: Because it has so many problems.

Due to the large numbers of students on each bus, we cannot approve students riding another bus which they are not assigned. This procedure prevents over-crowding/unsafe conditions.

To ensure students get to the correct location each day, MGS discour-ages changes to any daily routines of how your child goes home. How-ever, if there is a change, it must be made before 8:45 AM (no longer 2:00 PM) due to the fact teachers may not be able to check emails in time for dismissal.

Principal’s Perspective MGS Messenger Page 5

PARENTS: If you need to meet with your child’s teacher, please set up an appointment

prior to this meeting. Please do not drop by due to the fact teachers usually have meet-

ings/ supervisory assignments already established and will not be able to meet. Email

the teacher or call and leave a message if you need to set up a meeting.

Notice If your child has a parent presentation toward the end of the school day and your presentation ends before school is out for the day, please remind parents if they plan to take the other siblings home, a note needs to be sent by the parent to their teachers on that day in the AM or sooner. We cannot notify teachers at the last mi-nute to dismiss the siblings. Thank you so much for you cooperation.

When in the building after 3:00 pm, please remember to supervise your children.

School Security: A Proactive Approach It is of paramount importance to provide a safe learning environment for students, staff and visitors. If you are coming to school for school matters and if you “buzz in” to enter the build-ing, do not allow other individuals (even if you recognize them) to walk into the building. Please remind the other individual to buzz in on their own. Thanks for your help and consid-eration to ensure the safety of our MGS students and staff.

K-8 Parents/Guardians,

We are in the process of planning for the 2018-2019 school year. If there is a possibility that you are planning to move outside the MGS school district before the start of school next year, please notify one of the school offices at 367-2361 (K-5) or 367-2377 (Jr. High) as soon as possible. This would be a tremendous help to the school to help when ordering materials, establishing the number of home-rooms, and making a smooth transition for people moving in and out of the school district. If you know you are moving and do not have time to call in, please fill out the information below and have your child return this form to their homeroom teacher and they will let the office know.

We will be moving to another school district before the next school (2018-2019) year begins.

(Name of child/grade level-- Place it above on the line above):

(Parent Signature/Date—Place it above on the line above):

If you can return this form by the end of April (April 30th, 2018), it would be greatly appreciated.

*Please note that your child will be assigned their 2018-2019 homeroom teacher’s name during the summer and next year’s teacher name will not be placed on your child’s end-of-the year report card. With the economy in question and possible fluctuation of classroom numbers, I will be placing your child’s assigned homeroom list on the front door of the building on Aug. 1 or on Skyward. You child’s jr. high schedules can be obtained on-line the first week of August.

Thanks again for your time and fine efforts.

The Boys’ and Girls’ track teams are off to a great start. Weather has made it difficult to get in meets, but the athletes have been working exceptionally hard to get themselves ready. This has led to some great overall performances on the track.

WILDCAT INVITE - The first big invitational was the East Peoria Wildcat Invite on Friday, April 13th. The team really went out and competed against some really tough competition. We had two hurdlers that medaled at the meet with Payton Forney placing 2nd and Becca Ice plac-ing 3rd.

TAZWOOD CONFERNCE - The Tazwood Conference track meet was run on Saturday, April 21st at Metamora High School. Again, the teams competed well at the meet and we had several conference champions. For the 7th grade girls, Allie Delost placed 1st in the 100 and Kailani

Egli placed 1st and Lauren Roley 2nd in the Pole Vault. The 7th grade boys also did well with several confer-ence champions; Drew Tucker-High Jump, Logan Endland- Pole Vault and the 200, Aaron Andrade- Hurdles, and the 4X100 – Blake Asbury, Logan England, Aaron Andrade, and Drew Tucker.

SCHOOL RECORDS – The first meet of the year, we had two school records. Drew Tucker tied the 7th grade

boys’ school record in the high jump going 5’6”. Kailani Egli also set a school record in the 7th grade girls’ pole vault with a vault of 8’6”.

We have had a great year with NED learning about making champion choices. Our final lesson for the year will focus on never giving up. In the month of May, we will learn that we all face difficult things and how to not give up even when things are difficult. We will discuss strate-gies like learning from mistakes, persistence, risk-taking, and positive thinking as well as quali-ties such as confidence and determination. Finally, we will learn that even little by little we can walk far. We encourage you to talk to your child about something difficult they are experi-encing and how they can persevere through it.

Presenters needed for Spring 2018 K-5th grade MGS STEM* Career Fair

The MGS Foundation for Educational Excellence is sponsoring Spotlight on Ca-

reers in STEM during the weeks of April 30 and May 7. We are asking communi-

ty members to come to school to meet with students in kindergarten through

fifth grade to discuss their careers and how they use STEM (Science, Technolo-

gy, Engineering, and Mathematics). Visitors can meet with one classroom of

twenty children or multiple classes or have a display in a gym. The goal is to in-

form the students about various careers involving STEM to increase students’

interest, curiosity and excitement about future school and career opportuni-

ties in STEM. Volunteers will visit classrooms, discuss what they do in their job

and how they use math, science, or technology and perhaps engage the stu-

dents with a STEM-related demonstration or hands-on activity. You are free to

chose your audience and how you wish to share your information.

Please contact Becky Rhodes at [email protected] if you would like

to be part of our Spotlight on Careers in STEM at MGS. She will work with you to

plan your visit to suit your interests and schedule. Almost any job (e.g. dental

hygienist, carpenter, sales person, technician, industrial worker) uses science,

technology, engineering or math in some manner. If you have ideas about

other speakers or activities that we can include to inform and inspire students

about STEM, you may also contact Becky Rhodes.

We are counting on you to make this event a success for the students of MGS.

I just wanted to send out a thank you for another great job in helping make Family Fun Night a suc-cess!! We ended up having over 100 kids come through on Friday. We ended up with 8 therapy dogs that came from WOOF. They were all beautiful and definitely got lots of attention that night from the kids. We also had two girls from the FFA come with a bunny and 2 chickens. They gained quite a draw as well. Our obstacle course was a hit too. We could not have pulled this off without all of your help. Please remember when dropping students off in the front of the building in the mornings to please park in a parking spot, even if it is a 15 min. designated spot . Walk your child to the sidewalk until 8:20. At 8:20, you must bring your child into the main office to check them in. If you want to drop your child off in the morning, you can do that out back on Madison Street until 8:10. The doors on Madison Street lock at 8:10. During dismissal time, please don’t park along the south gym.

RULES FOR DROPPING OFF AND PICKING UP STUDENTS

Madison Street:

Students exit through the junior high doors. There is no parking. Please pull ahead to the end of the sidewalk so that many cars can pick up students at once. Your child cannot enter/exit the car from the passenger side of the car on Madison St. If they must exit or enter the driver’s side then the par-ent must use the front entrance. If the parent with a car seat must use the driver side back door to unbuckle the child, please use the front of the building instead. Students are to walk on the sidewalks and enter the car on the passenger side of the car, not in the road, for safety purpos-es. Parents must remain inside the vehicle and wait for their child/ren to enter their vehicle. Students will come out of the back door starting at 3:00 PM. Students remain on the sidewalk next to Madison Street waiting for their rides for going home. No students should run or play during pick-up time.

*PARENTS: When dropping off and picking up students, please pull forward to the next vacant spot to prevent traffic congestion.

REMEMBER…..

School begins each day at 8:20 am this year.

If your child is absent or going to be late to school PLEASE call the office.

Junior High student call 367-2377.

Kindergarten - 5th grade call 367-2361.

Remember, Kindergarten, 2nd and 6th graders are required to have a dental examination. Make sure that you have scheduled your appointment.

Just a reminder to all parents that by law, a courthouse copy of each child's birth certificate must be on file at the school. Letters have been sent to all parents who need to provide birth certificates. If you received a letter, please provide the school with a copy of the birth certificate as soon as possible.

Once a parent arrives on the sidewalk, the child is to wait with the parent and remain on the sidewalk while awaiting other students to take home. No students nor siblings are to play or run or leave their parents side on the sidewalk while waiting to leave.

No U-Turn in School Zone (Madison Street)

No U-turn signs will have been placed on Madison Street along our school zone area due to the congestion and safety of students crossing the streets. These signs should help prevent car accidents and students being hurt.

A ticket can be given for an illegal U-turn. Again our main goal is to ensure our students are safe.
