1. GENERAL APPLICATION

The use of the Metal Detector in accordance with the regulations is the detection of metal parts in mines or in ammunition or explosive ordnance in the ground and in shallow water. The search head must be moved above the ground in such a way that obstacles like grass, stones, branches or explosive ordnances are not touched. ATTENTION: Danger of Explosion. Do not use the metal detector for scanning persons. The Metal Detector is consisting of two parts: control unit with telescopic pole and a pluggable oval search head. As an optional accessory a large UXO search head or a stick probe can be connected. The oval search head is recommended for the detection of metal mines and plastic mines with minimum metal content as well as other small metal parts. The large UXO search head is recommended for the detection of shells, bombs and other ammunition in larger depths. The stick probe is recommended for detection even in hollow spaces, bushes and trusses of hay. The detector has been designed for the highly accurate detection of all types of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Ease of operation and a rigid and compact mechanical design ensure very reliable operation for professional ordnance clearing in battlefield operations and rigorous military training programs. Along with its digital signal processor the metal detector uses the function principle of an advanced pulse-field specially improved by Vallon. It can work also in strongly mineralized soils, like laterite, magnetite, magmatite as well as in shallow water (salt and fresh water) and under the electromagnetic influence of main power lines without affecting the detector’s sensitivity too much. The metal detector ready for service, including accessories, is delivered in a rigid carrying bag.

WARNING The Metal Detector detects metals only. Each audio signal may indicate a mine with metal content or an UXO. Mines containing only small metal parts with very special metallic alloy may eventually not be detected. Mines without any metal part will not be detected. Before starting detection work make the performance test as described in chapter 3.5.

WARNING

DO NOT USE THE METAL DETECTOR FOR LOCATING MAGNETICALLY INFLUENCED MUNITIONS. Some of the known mines of NATO-countries will not be activated, provided the detector is equipped with non-magnetic batteries. For detection of mines of other manufacturers it is recommended to test in advance whether they are detectable before the operator starts the detection work.

2.2 Search Head with Telescopic Pole The non-magnetic search heads (oval and UXO) are watertight, insensitive to

temperature changes, and shock-proof. The shape of the coil frame ensures a free view to the ground. The search heads can be swiveled round the pole. The end of this pole is provided with a watertight, rigid plug for connecting to the telescopic pole which is firmly connected to the detector electronic. Pole and telescopic pole are made from very rigid, short column and corrosion-free glass fibre reinforced plastic. The parts of the telescopic pole are provided with a guide rail. The design features prevent any twisting of the telescopic pole during sweeping operations. That means the position of the search head remains constant in relation to the hand grip. The connection cable for the search head to the electronics unit runs completely inside the telescopic pole so that it cannot be damaged. The correct connection between search head and control unit is monitored by the electronics.

3.2 Switching ON and OFF and Program Settings

The mode selector serves as ON-OFF-switch as well.

The metal detector is in use world-wide. In order to ensure that it operates fast and accurately also in areas with a high mineral content, for example magnetite stones, laterite or bauxite soil, some special detection features are available.

Fig. 3-4 mode selector

3.2.1 Confidence Click

In addition to the standard audio signals, a “confidence click” is audible during the operation of the detector in the program for normal (N) or mineralized (M) soil. In normal soil, the confidence click is a single short pulse, every 2 seconds. In mineralized soil, the confidence click is a double short pulse signal.

3.3 Fine Adaptation to Mineralized Soil 3.3.1 Automatic Fine Adaptation to Mineralized Soil

For detection work in mineralized soil set the mode selector to position “mineral”. This activates a standard program for mineralized soils. The exact soil conditions depending on the respective country (Cambodia or Mozambique or New Mexico, a.s.o.) have to be adjusted by a fine adaptation directly at site. The achieved data will be stored deliberately until a new fine adaptation is started (even if the detector is switched OFF, if batteries are missing, if keeping on stock, a.s.o.). Procedure:

1. Set the mode selector to position „mineral”.

2. Put the search head on the ground (please choose an area absolutely free

of metal)

3. Press key „C“ in the hand grip and keep it pressed.

4. After 3 seconds while keeping button „C“ pressed a short tone (beep) becomes audible. The metal concentration of the previous soil is indicated by one of the 14 diodes of the LED display. Lift up the search head and move it back to the ground. Depending on the mineral concentration several up-and-down-movements are necessary. During these up-and-down-movements a continuously decreasing audio signal is produced, it becomes smaller and smaller. The lighting diode on the LED-display is now shifted either to the left or to the right according to the mineral concentration of the present soil. Repeat these up-and-down movements with pressed button „C“ until a continuous tone (beep) is produced. In strongly mineralized soil this procedure may need up to 1 minute.

5. Stop pressing button „C“: You will hear one short tone (beep) which confirms the storage of the achieved data.

In case of difficult ground conditions the detector can be adapted manually to the mineralized soil. The achieved data will be stored deliberately until a new fine adaptation is started (also if the detector is switched OFF, if batteries are missing, if keeping on stock, a.s.o.). Procedure:

1. Set the mode selector to position „mineral”.

2. Put the search head on the ground (please choose an area absolutely free

of metal)

3. Press button „C“ in the hand grip and keep it pressed.

4. Press button”+” in the hand grip and keep it pressed.

5. After 3 seconds while keeping button „C“ and button “+” pressed a short tone (beep) becomes audible.

6. While hearing the short tone (beep) stop pressing button “+” but continue to keep button „C“ pressed. The metal concentration of the previous soil is now indicated by one of the 14 diodes of the LED display. Lift up the search head and move it back to the ground. While keeping button “C” pressed you can adjust the setting for the mineral concentration by pressing the buttons “+” respectively “-“ until it corresponds to the soil conditions and no more audio signal is produced during these up-and-down-movements.

7. Stop pressing button „C“: You will hear one short tone (beep) which confirms the storage of the achieved data.

3.3.3 Important Notes NOTE

Start soil compensation only after the detector has adapted itself to the ambient temperature. In case of more than 15°C difference in temperature between storeroom and detection place wait for approx. 10 minutes.

NOTE If the audio signal does not become smaller during the up-and-down-movement of the search, please check whether a metal object has been detected. NOTE When pressing, by mistake, button “C” during detection longer than approx. 3 seconds, the ground balance will change to another soil condition. You must repeat the procedure.

NOTE

The program “mineral” adapts the detector to the metallic properties of the

soil. Mines containing metal components with the same electromagnetic features may be overlooked. Use program „mineral“ only if absolutely necessary. Recommendation: Create a test field in the soil to be detected. This field should contain all mines to be expected.

3.4 Setting the Detection Sensitivity

When switched ON the detector starts with its standard sensitivity setting. This standard setting can be changed by pressing the buttons „+“ and „-“ in the hand grip. The level of the detection sensitivity is symbolically indicated by the length of the LED-bargraph in the hand grip. The selected sensitivity will be kept constant by the electronics under all environmental conditions (temperature changes, etc.). If you are operating with the highest detection sensitivity (threshold of the audio signal) we recommend in case of strong temperature changes (i.e. from cold storage to warm field conditions) to readjust the detection sensitivity as follows:

Temperature Change

Readjust

after

up to 20°C 5 min.

40°C or more 10 min.

The selected sensitivity is kept constant during the operation until the detector is switched OFF. After each switching ON you have to select the desired detection sensitivity again. NOTE

For safety reasons the detector always starts with its basic sensitivity setting, that means with high detection sensitivity.

3.5 Operational Readiness, Sensitivity Test Piece

The proper function of the metal detector can be tested by means of the delivered test piece as follows:

1. Before starting the test procedure, make sure that all alarm modes (three)

are active (audio alarm, LED-display, vibration).

2. Select the desired soil program (set the mode selector to position “normal” or „mineral”) and wait until battery check has been finished.

3. Place the metal detector on an area free of metals. a. No audio signal should be audible b. No LEDs should be illuminated c. No vibration alarm should be perceptible.

4. Move the test piece vertically (string at the top) from the top (starting from the telescopic pole in approx. 0.5 meter distance to the search head) towards the search head until the test piece is positioned on the center of the search head. (The operator’s hand must be free of metal parts; i.e. no watches, no rings, etc.).

Fig. 3-6 Function Test

5. When approaching the test piece to the search head

- the audio signal must increase. - the vibration alarm must be perceptible. - more and more illuminating diodes must be activated. Approx. 7 LEDs must be illuminated when touching the center of search head.

6. Remove the test piece from the search head.

7. Turn off the Metal Detector.

Remarks: For checking the compensation of the metal detector you can place the test piece on the center of the search head. In program „normal“ the strength of the audio signal is decreasing until it disappears completely. In program „mineral“ the strength of the audio signal remains unchanged and disappears only after short pressing of button „C“ in the hand grip.

3.6 Checking the Battery Capacity Level

- Set the mode selector from OFF to „normal“ or „mineral“. For approx. 5 seconds an interrupted audio signal respectively

vibrations are produced. The "faster" the signal, the fuller the batteries.

4. AUDIO ALARM SIGNALS DURING OPERATION (Training procedures to simulate detector audio signals)

The metal detector provides via the headset/loudspeaker a lot of information

to the operator. This short training chapter will allow the user to become familiar with all of the different alarms and how they are distinctly different from each other.

Of course, an audio alarm signal is produced only if the corresponding alarm

configuration has been selected (please refer to chapter 3.1). 4.1 Full Battery Charge Signal (Simulation) - Insert 3 new unused batteries into the battery compartment. - Switch the detector ON. - For about the first 5 seconds after the detector is switched ON, a fast pulsed signal is audible. 4.2 Battery Charge Signal with 50 % of Capacity (Simulation)

- Insert 2 new unused batteries and 1 nearly empty battery into the battery compartment.

- Switch the detector ON. - For about the first 5 seconds after the detector is switched ON, a slow pulsed signal is audible. This signal

corresponds to a residual battery capacity of 50 %.

The detection sensitivity remains constant while the battery voltage drops

down.

10 pulses/sec. with approx. 2300 Hz

6 pulses /sec. with approx. 2300 Hz

4.3 Low Battery Charge Signal (Simulation) - Switch the detector ON. - Place the search head on the ground. - Place an extra battery or metal part on the search head. - A high tone will sound continuously. This signal would be audible if the batteries reach a low level (not

enough capacity for the detector to operate at 100 %). The vibrator produces a continuous signal until the batteries are completely exhausted.

4.4 Detector "Non Functioning" Signal (Simulation)

- Insert 3 batteries into the battery compartment. - Disconnect search head

- Switch the detector ON. After 5 sec. a low continuous signal is audible.

This signal will also be generated if the electronics finds a fault during operation.

The vibrator produces the same signal. The following parameters can be faulty: - 6 internal voltages which are responsible for proper operation. - Connection to the search head. - Capacity, induction value, and resistance of the coils in the search head. - Voltage, time, and energy of every pulse.

High continuous signal, approx. 2300 Hz

Low continuous signal, approx. 500 Hz

4.5 Typical Target Detection Signals Deeply buried, large metal mines and small metal parts near the surface can

be differentiated by an audio alarm signal.

Move the search head with continuous speed above the ground surface. The maximum detection signal is produced directly above the center of the mine (metal part) and indicated as follows: a) Maximum volume of the audio signal.

b) LEDs on the display are illuminated (length proportional to the strength

of the audio signal) c) Vibration in the hand grip.

Upon detection of medium size metal mines and larger, the signal strength is

strong enough to switch-over the alarm threshold respectively the LED-display.

Now a second audio signal (II) is produced. Alarm signal II indicates that there is a large amount of metal. The 14th LED of the optical display flashes and indicates that second detection signal is activated.

7. PRACTICAL DETECTION WORK Each spot of the search head has nearly the same detection sensitivity.

However, the maximum detection signal will be produced if the detected metal object is located directly in the centre of the search head. The metal detector uses a dynamic function principle to avoid false alarms and to ensure an optimal soil adjustment. That means the search head must always be moved in order to ensure the maximum sensitivity. The movements can be made sideways or forwards and backwards depending on the terrain. If you have detected a metal object, you can determine its exact position by searching the maximum detection signal when moving the search head sideways and forwards/backwards. The metal objects is located at the cross over point of both movements

7.1 Pinpointing

To facilitate the pinpointing procedure the Metal Detector is provided with a PINPOINT-button. When pressing the PINPOINT-button the dynamic mode is switched OFF. That means the detection signal is no longer compensated and you can search the centre of the object with extremely slow movements of the search head and without any loss of detection sensitivity.

If you stop pressing the PINPOINT-button the metal detectors continues in its standard dynamic mode.

NOTE: After you have detected the exact position of the metal

object, lift off the search head from the metal object and then stop pressing the PINPOINT-button.

NOTE: During pinpointing the soil compensation of the metal

detector is not automatically readjusted. Therefore, use the pinpointing function only if necessary and only for a short time. If you use the pinpointing function for a longer time, a continuous audio signal might be produced. Clear the continuous audio signal by pressing button “C”.

NOTE: Pinpointing is not advantageous in heavily mineralized

and/or very uneven ground.

7.2 Detection in Non-Overgrown Areas with the Oval Search Head

Detection work is relatively simple in areas free from vegetation as the operator has always free view to the search head. You can move the search head with an extremely small distance to the ground.

7.3 Detection in Overgrown Areas with the Oval Search Head The detection of mines in an area full of dense vegetation is very dangerous,

difficult and time-consuming. By moving the search head over the ground you may possibly touch a trip wire or the release mechanism of a mine, which is positioned close to the ground surface (e. g. PROM1), and may trigger an explosion.

The trained deminer knows very well the precautionary measures in overgrown areas, e. g. checking first of all the grass and the branches with the trip wire feeler and cutting the grass and the branches thereafter carefully etc. You should have free view to the search head at any time. We refer to the well-known SOP’s (standard operation procedures).

NOTE: The SOP’S have absolute priority to any instruction manual.

NOTE: Move the search head continuously as the detection system has a dynamic function principle and adapts itself continuously to the soil.

NOTE: In order to determine the exact position of the

detected metal object faster, press the PINPOINT-button and move the search head slowly above the metal object (the maximum signal is produced when the metal objects is in the centre of the search head).

Page 35: METAL DETECTOR VMH3CS - Vallon€¦ · Do not use the metal detector for scanning persons. The Metal Detector is consisting of two parts: control unit with telescopic pole ... Metal

7.4 Detection in Waters

You can also immerse the search head in flat waters in order to detect metal objects or mines hidden in the ground. Usually there is a larger difference in temperature between air and water. Therefore, we recommend the following procedure: 1. Immerse the search head in the water

2. Wait for approx. 15 seconds until the search head has adapted itself to the

water temperature

3. Start compensation by pressing button „C“ briefly

4. After the alarm signal has stopped, you can move the search head slowly above the ground of waters and observe the detection signals.

8. SIMULTANEOUS OPERATION OF TWO DETECTORS IN CLOSE VICINITY If you intend to examine an area with two detectors working close to each, a minimum distance of 2 m is possible provided that the working frequency of the metal detectors has been adjusted correspondingly. The adjustment of the working frequency is done as follows:

1. Set the program selector to position 2. Press button „C“ in the hand grip and keep it pressed.

As a check a short tone (beep) becomes audible (keep button „C“ pressed) and two LEDs in the display light up.

Adjust the working frequency with buttons „+“ and „-“ (keep button „C“

pressed) The adjusted working frequency is indicated by the LED-display in the hand grip as follows:

Detector

LED-Display in the hand grip

Frequency 1

Detector No. 1

1st and 11th LED visible

Frequency 7

Detector No. 2

7th and 11th LED visible

After having adjusted the desired working frequency let go of button „C“. 3. Set program selector to position „normal“ or „mineral“ and start detection work.

The achieved data will be stored deliberately until new frequencies are chosen (even if the detector is switched OFF, if batteries are missing, if keeping on stock, a.s.o.).

9. DATA INPUT / DATA OUTPUT 9.1 Computer aided UXO detection (Only reasonable after all mines have been cleared) The metal detector is provided with a RS 232 data output on the front panel.

The measuring data can be stored by the VALLON data loggers MEMOBOX MB4 or FIELD COMPUTER VFC1 (with external power supply) and evaluated in a PC with Software VALLON EVA2000®. The acquisition rate is 40 measuring values/sec. The layout of the connector pins is as follows:

A: RxD RS 232 B: Audio signal for headset

C: +BSW D: Audio signal/GPS E: TxD RS 232 F: GND

Fig. 9-1 – Data input and output RS 232

NOTE: We recommend using a PC with LCD-screen (Laptop). An active PC-cathode ray screen is causing interferences to the metal

detector. Therefore, keep minimum 5 m (15 feet) distance from the detector during data acquisition!

9.2 Firmware Upgrade The connector is provided with a RS 232 data input to upgrade the firmware of

the detector.

View from front panel side.

2. TYPICAL TARGET DETECTION SIGNALS OF THE UXO SEARCH HEAD Deeply buried, large metal mines and small metal parts near the surface can

be differentiated by an audio alarm signal. Move the search head with continuous speed in parallel above the ground

surface.

Maximum detection signal means: a) Maximum volume of the audio signal.

b) LEDs on the display are illuminated (length proportional to the strength

of the audio signal).

c) Vibration in the hand grip. The maximum detection signal is produced in two different kinds.

3. DETECTION IN OVERGROWN AREAS WITH THE UXO SEARCH HEAD The round UXO search head is recommended for the detection of unexploded

ordnances like shells, bomblets and other ammunition parts. As the round UXO search head has a large penetration depth, it is recommended to keep a distance of approx. 20 cm to the ground. This facilitates not only the swinging movements in dense vegetation but allows the safe detection of bomblets as well. NOTE: The SOP’S have absolute priority to any

instruction manual.

NOTE: Move the search head continuously as the detection system has a dynamic function principle and adapts itself continuously to the soil.
