have a peaceul demonstration.
This leaet explains how the
demonstration will be policed
and what to do i there are any
problems.

Southern and Eastern Regional Council o
the Trades Union Congress (SERTUC) have
announced that they are holding a London
regional march and rally on Wednesday 30
November 2011. Participants are expected to
assemble rom 12 noon in Lincolns Inn Fields
to march to Victoria Embankment along the
ollowing route:
Lincolns Inn Fields,
Kingsway,
Aldwych,
Strand,
Northumberland Avenue,
Victoria Embankment.
The march is scheduled to move o at
1pm and a rally will commence at 2pm at
Victoria Embankment. It is expected toconclude at 3pm.

The Metropolitan Police Service is here to
help acilitate a sae and peaceul protest.
We are committed to upholding the law and
we respect the right to peaceul protest. This
leaet / inormation seeks to explain how the
demonstration will be policed and what to
do i there are any problems.
What you can expect to see:
Police ofcers will be visible along the route
o this demonstration. They will also be
positioned at road junctions. This is to ensure
that individuals walking on the road are kept
away rom moving trafc. Road closures
will be in place on the day and all roads onthe route will be closed when necessary to
relieve congestion and ensure saety.
You may notice ofcers outside some
premises. This is because during some
previous protests some buildings have been
targeted and damaged. The ofcers are
there to protect those buildings and to help
those inside to go about their daily business,
and deal with any incidents o crime and
disorder.

I am planning to travel toLondon on the day, what traveladvice can you give?
When considering your journey remember
that there are likely to be large numbers opeople travelling into and around central
London and some areas may be congested.
Leave sufcient time and make sure that you
plan your day careully.
During this event, it may be necessary to
close or control access to some underground
stations (particularly Westminster and
Embankment) in order to ensure the saety
o the public and passengers. Please bear
with us i this should be necessary.

What will the ofcers be wearing?
In the main you can expect to see ofcers in
yellow jackets and traditional police hats.I violence or disorder takes place the
ofcers may change their headwear to a
helmet with a visor. The ofcers will revert
to normal headwear as soon as it is sae to
do so. Please be aware that when an ofcer
is wearing a helmet it is more difcult orthem to communicate and i you are not
acing them they may not hear you and they
may shout. There will be ofcers rom other
constabularies assisting in the policing o
this event. All the ofcers will be uniquely
identifable by a series o numbers, lettersor both which will be visible on their outer
clothing.
What i I become a victim o crime?
On occasion large crowds may attract indi-
viduals or groups intent on committing acts
o criminal behaviour. Please be aware o
your immediate environment / surroundings
and ensure that you keep all valuables out o
sight. Remain alert at all times and i you are
a victim o crime report it to police by:-

2. Non emergency dial 101 (Calls to 101 rom
landlines and mobiles cost 15 pence per
call, no matter what time o day you call
or how long your call lasts)3. Visiting the nearest police station

Missing PersonsI a child, young person or vulnerable
individual becomes lost during the march
and rally, please inorm a steward or police
ofcer immediately. There is a designated
place o saety in Westminster in the event o
these missing persons being ound.
What i there is violenceor disorder?
I there is violence or disorder ofcerspresent may intervene to prevent it.
This may result in people being arrested.
Attempts by demonstrators to deviate rom
the agreed route may result in ofcers
stopping or slowing the progress o the
demonstration.
I you are near an outbreak o violence or
disorder move away and create a distance

between you and those taking part. Do not
stand and watch as it may not be sae or
you to do so. The ofcers at the scene will
intervene. Please give them room to work.
What should I do i I witness disorder?
You can contact any police station and give
your name in the same way as above using
the non emergency number (Dial 101). Anofcer will then contact you.
I you have inormation about crime, you
can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on
0800 555 111.
I you have a problem, any questions or
require assistance you can speak to a police
ofcer along the route.
Will I be contained?
Containment is used as a last resort, whenthere is serious disorder or to prevent
an imminent breach o the peace. I a
containment is implemented it will be in
place or no longer than is necessary to deal
with the issue. The ofcers will be mindul
o your welare and they will attempt to let
you know what is happening and help you
get out as soon as is practical. I you are

suspected o being involved in disorder
you may be questioned as you leave the
containment.
What does it mean i I seepolice horses out?
Police horses are a valuable part o policing
London and orm an eective addition to
policing protest. You will see police horsesworking on this event.
What i I want to makea complaint?
You may make a complaint about policebehaviour at any police station, in writing,
by phone (0300 123 1212) or by e-mail. Full
details o how to make a complaint can be
ound on the Metropolitan Police website

You can also make a complaint to the
Independent Police Complaints Commission.
Full details can be ound at www.ipcc.gov.uk
Ofcers who are policing this event may not
be in a position to take your complaint at
the time.

What is Section 60?
Section 60 Criminal Justice and Public Order
Act 1994, gives police the right to search
people in a defned area at a specifc time
when they believe, with good reason, that:
there is the possibility o serious violence; or
that a person is carrying a dangerous object
or oensive weapon; or that an incident
involving serious violence has taken placeand a dangerous instrument or oensive
weapon used in the incident is being
carried in the locality. This power has to be
authorised by a senior ofcer.
What is Section 60AA?
Section 60AA o the Criminal Justice and
Public Order Act 1994 provides powers
to require the removal o disguises at
public order events where a Section 60
authorisation is in orce or an authorisationis given under this section.
60AA(1) Where-
(a) an authorisation under Section 60 or the
time being in orce in relation to any
locality or any period, or

(b) an authorisation under subsection (3)
that the powers conerred by subsection
(2) shall be exercisable at any place in
a locality is in orce or any period, thosepowers shall be exercisable at any place
in that locality at any time in that period.
60AA(2) This subsection coners power
on any constable in uniorm-
(a) to require any person to remove anyitem which the constable reasonably
believes that person is wearing wholly or
mainly or the purpose o concealing his
identity;
(b) to seize any item which the constable
reasonably believes any person intendsto wear wholly or mainly or that purpose.
