The SMA Story
The training of seafarers under the Singapore Polytechnic started in 1957Training expanded to include engineering and business aspectsTraining of ratings was conducted by the Seafarers’ Welfare Board which was later taken over by the National Maritime Academy under the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).
SMA was formed in 2000 as a result of the merger of the Maritime Technology and Transportation (MTT) Department of the Singapore Polytechnic and the National Maritime Academy (NMA) of MPA

Industry Landscape : Skills Framework for Sea Transport
Structured guide that lists the skills required for the 48 different jobs in the sea transport sector Charts the career progression of workers Launched by Senior Minister of State for Transport, Mrs Josephine Teo at the Singapore International Maritime Awards on 25 April 2017.Lays out trends in the sector, so prospective and existing workers can upgrade their skills and prepare for their desired jobs. Enhanced Internship Programme
Students are exposed to the real work environment and to enable them to make a better transition into the workplace. The internship experience made more structured and meaningful with real work activities including clear learning outcomes, better mentorship, and where relevant, extended durations of the attachments.All the students in SMA’s 3 full-time diploma courses would undergo the EIP. Students from the DMR and DMB courses go for their 6-month internship in either April or September while the DNS cadets go for the 1-year sea training in October

MagnetismThis program demonstrates abstract concepts on magnetism and the principles related to the correction of the ships compass.
Storm Navigation Storm navigation highlights the basic principles to be followed when navigating in or near a Tropical Revolving Storm.
Draught SurveyThis program aims to train the user on how to effectively conduct Draught Survey and assists the surveyor with a Draught Survey Generator program.
Deck Log BookExplains the purpose of the deck log book and provides support to new watchkeeping and duty officers in updating the log book during their watch.

Starting Air SystemExplains the manoeuvering of SMC engine, from remote and local control. It also includes a section on maintenance and troubleshooting.
TurbochargerExplains the working of a turbocharger, its maintenance, evaluation of its performance and an emergency operation if the turbocharger is damaged.
Fresh Water GeneratorExplains the working principle of a fresh water generator. It includes a simulator that allows a user to start and optimise production of fresh water.
Steam TurbineA comprehensive learning tool to understand the factors affecting a Steam Turbine Plant’s efficiency and methods used to optimise it.
Engine Log BookExplains the purpose of the engine log book and provides support to new watchkeeping and duty engineers in updating the log book during their watch.
