MEST Standard Child Friendly WASH Facilities in Schools in Sierra Leone

MEST Minimum Standards for Child Friendly WASH Facilities
• At least 1.5 litres of safe drinking water per pupil per day
• At least 45 students per drop hole of school latrine
• Not less than 4 drop holes of school latrine
• Visually separated for boys and girls
• At least 100ft from a well of borehole
• Dust bins should be available in strategic location
• A site for burning garbage should be chosen and
equipped with fenses
MEST Construction Standard
• Construction standards for school facilities are set and monitored by MEST
• These standards refer to the design of school building, toilets and water wells
• These school facilities are to be respected by IPs

Overall size 1’- 3” long x 1’ -2” wide x 2” thick with 6” diameter holes
• Rails:2”x2” box pipe weilded as per design 3’ x 3’ fix to wall and floor

6’ x 12’-6” x 15’ depth
2 per site not less than 20m apart
• Block Work in Pit:Precast sandcrete solid blocks,
Bedded and jointed in cement mortar (1:6)

• Concrete Work:Reinforced in-situ concrete
(1:2:4 - 3/4” aggregate)
In up stand beams suspended slab
over pit 4” thick including cutting
manholes 2’-1” x 1’-3”
• WASH Facility:
Construct to completion with concrete 2’ x 3’ x 3’
Stand for WASH drum (used pig feet drum)
